“Where does my time on Windows actually go?” That question led Hafid Idrissi to build Local Time Tracker, a Windows desktop app that samples the foreground application, visible window title, and keyboard or mouse idle duration. Idrissi describes it as a free, open-source project built with Python, Tkinter, and SQLite, designed to keep activity records on the computer rather than send them to a tracking service. That design reduces reliance on a cloud account, but it does not make the collected data harmless or encrypted.
What the tracker records—and what it can tell you
According to Idrissi’s account, the app periodically captures which Windows application is in the foreground, the visible title of its window, and how long it has been since keyboard or mouse input. It groups those observations into activity periods and starts a new period when the application, window title, or idle state changes.
The result is a record of foreground focus, not a direct measurement of attention. A document window can remain active while its user is away, and a browser title cannot show whether someone read, understood, or acted on the page. As Idrissi puts it, “The tracker measures foreground focus, not human productivity.”
Sampling also creates boundaries on precision. Because the application checks periodically, it can miss brief changes between polls. An idle transition may be recorded only after the idle threshold has passed and the next poll detects it; the resulting periods should therefore be treated as useful estimates, not exact time accounting.

Why keep the design local?
Idrissi says the project was motivated partly by concern that cloud-based time trackers can collect sensitive window or browser-tab titles. The described app requires no account or server and has no advertising or telemetry, according to its author. Those are claims in the project account, not the findings of an independent privacy audit.
Local storage also has an important limit: window titles themselves may contain private information, including document names, searches, email subjects, or client details. The author states that the database is stored at %LOCALAPPDATA%LocalTimeTrackerdataactivity.db, with reports in a neighboring reports directory. A file stored on the same computer is not automatically encrypted; protection depends on the Windows account and the security of the disk. In Idrissi’s words, “local does not automatically mean encrypted.”

Generated reports are described as standalone HTML files that do not rely on external scripts, fonts, trackers, or network connections. That can make them usable offline, but anyone who can access a report may still be able to read its activity details. Treat both the storage path and report behavior as the author’s description rather than a verified inspection of the current release.

From Windows activity to a dashboard
The author describes a pipeline that starts with Windows APIs and an activity snapshot, then applies tracking and state-transition logic before writing records to SQLite. A Tkinter dashboard presents the resulting live activity and summaries. The project uses pywin32 and psutil for Windows activity information; SQLite provides an embedded database without a separately configured database server.

Idrissi says the dashboard includes active and idle totals, recent activity periods, daily and seven-day analysis, rankings, and hourly and daily charts. Browser-title normalization is also described: recognized title suffixes are removed to group tabs under cleaner names for Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Brave, Opera, and Vivaldi. The account says the app does not inspect page contents, but a browser window title can still reveal what site or document is open.
Why Python, Tkinter, and SQLite fit this project
- Python keeps Windows integration, activity modeling, analysis, and reporting in one codebase, which the author chose for understandability.
- Tkinter supplies a desktop interface without a browser runtime or separate frontend build system. The trade-off acknowledged by the author is less visual flexibility.
- SQLite stores data transactionally in an embedded database, avoiding the need for a database service, account, or server configuration.
These choices are a fit for the project’s stated scope, not a claim that they are the best tools for every tracker. A design that favors local operation and a small desktop stack still has to handle sensitive records carefully.

Reports, testing, and contributor safeguards
In the project account, HTML reports provide another way to review activity outside the dashboard. Idrissi also describes tests written with Python’s unittest framework for tracking transitions, analytics, title normalization, categories, database behavior, and report generation. GitHub Actions is said to run tests for pull requests and changes to the main branch; tagged releases are described as testing, building a Windows application and installer, and publishing a SHA-256 checksum. These are descriptions of the project workflow, not independently verified results for a current release.
The author’s contribution guidance addresses the sensitivity of activity data directly: contributors are asked to use synthetic demonstration data, not upload a real activity.db, and avoid screenshots that expose personal window titles. The project account also describes private vulnerability reporting and asks pull requests to document privacy and compatibility impacts.

Who this kind of tracker suits
A local foreground tracker can help someone notice patterns—such as how much time applications occupy—without manually starting and stopping timers. It is less suited to anyone who needs proof of actual work, precise billing records, or a complete account of activity across devices. Its usefulness depends on whether approximate foreground periods answer the user’s question, and whether keeping window-title data locally is an acceptable privacy trade-off.
The project account was published by Hafid Idrissi on August 27, 2026. It describes a Windows-only application and notes sampling gaps and an installer that may trigger SmartScreen because it is not signed with a trusted Authenticode certificate. Since release behavior and signing status can change, check the project’s current release information before relying on those details.
