You can build a local RAG chatbot for trading research on Android using Termux, Ollama, and a vector store, without paying a remote inference API for each query. That does not make the project cost-free: you still need a suitable device, storage, electricity, and model downloads, which may use mobile data. The workflow is best treated as a way to find and summarize passages in your research library—not as an autonomous trading system or verified investment advice.
What the chatbot does—and what it cannot prove
Retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) pairs a language model with a search step. When you ask a question, the system finds passages in your document library and gives those passages to a chat model as context. The model then drafts an answer based on the question and retrieved text.
Ollama provides separate interfaces for chat and embeddings. An embedding model turns text into vectors that support semantic retrieval; a chat model generates the response. A retrieved match is only a signal to inspect a passage. It does not establish that the passage is relevant, authoritative, current, or correct. The answer is only as dependable as the documents, extraction, retrieval, and prompt behind it.
For trading research, use the chatbot to locate and organize evidence. Verify material claims against original filings, releases, transcripts, or other source records before relying on them.

What you need before building
- An Android device running Termux. Termux describes itself as an Android terminal emulator and Linux environment that works without rooting and installs packages through its package manager; see the official Termux overview.
- An Ollama installation path that currently supports your device and Android architecture. A community project documents Android ARM64 builds, but GitHub marks its repository archived on August 29, 2026. Its build instructions show that a community path existed, not that it remains maintained or is guaranteed to work now. Verify the release, checksum, architecture, and instructions before installing any binary.
- A local chat model, an embedding model, and a vector store. Ollama’s embedding walkthrough uses ChromaDB, but it does not establish ChromaDB as the only or best choice.
- A focused collection of documents you are entitled to store and process, such as public filings, earnings releases, transcripts, and personal research notes.
Android compatibility and performance depend on the particular device and setup. The available documentation does not establish a universal minimum memory requirement or expected response speed, so do not assume a model will run acceptably just because it can be downloaded.
Build the RAG workflow
1. Prepare a traceable research library
Start with a bounded corpus rather than every document you can find. Keep source title, publisher, publication date, URL, and a document identifier alongside each extracted text. Preserve section headings and dates when splitting documents into chunks; otherwise, a retrieved passage can lose the context needed to interpret it.
There is no universal chunk length established for this use case. Treat chunk size and overlap as settings to tune against your own documents and questions. Check extraction quality, especially for tables, footnotes, scanned pages, and documents with multiple dates.

2. Choose and use one embedding model consistently
Ollama’s embedding documentation describes the /api/embed endpoint and lists models such as embeddinggemma, qwen3-embedding, and all-minilm. Model names and API behavior can change, so check the current documentation when implementing the pipeline.
Ollama says vector length depends on the model, gives a typical range of 384–1024 dimensions, and states that /api/embed returns L2-normalized (unit-length) vectors. It recommends cosine similarity for most semantic-search use cases and advises using the same embedding model for indexing documents and embedding queries. The dimension range is general documentation, not a promise about every model.
3. Store vectors with the text and its metadata
For each chunk, retain its embedding, text, and source metadata in a vector store. Ollama’s embedding-models walkthrough demonstrates a ChromaDB example that stores document embeddings and text, embeds a user query, and searches for relevant documents.

For trading material, metadata should make it practical to open the original item and determine when it was published. A similarity score is not a reliability score: inspect whether a result actually answers the question and whether newer or more authoritative records should take precedence.

At query time, embed the question with the same embedding model used for the corpus. Retrieve a small set of candidate passages, then send the question and those passages to the local chat model. Ask it to cite the supplied document identifiers and to say plainly when the supplied material does not answer the question. Show the source titles and dates alongside the response so you can follow the citation back to the record.
This is the embed → retrieve → generate pattern shown in Ollama’s example. It does not guarantee a factual answer: the system can retrieve the wrong passage, miss a relevant one, or produce a misleading synthesis.

5. Test retrieval and inspect answers
Before using the chatbot for live research, create questions whose answers you already know from the documents. Check whether retrieval returns the passage that supports the answer, compare results for different query wording and document types, and see whether stale material outranks newer material. Confirm significant claims in the original source. No trading-performance, RAG-accuracy, or Android-speed statistics are established for this setup.
Choose the host, models, and corpus for your constraints
There is no supported one-size-fits-all combination. Decide based on what your device can run and what your research library requires.

Understand the cost and data boundaries
A local workflow can avoid a paid remote inference API charge for each query. “Zero API cost” does not mean zero total cost: the phone and electricity are not free, and models and documents take storage. Downloads may also consume mobile data. The available sources do not provide a total-cost estimate.

Local inference is the intended architecture, but it does not by itself establish where every piece of data goes. Model downloads, networked data collection, third-party apps, or exposing an Ollama service beyond the intended interface can change the data path. Check the actual configuration, keep the service bound to the interface you intend to use, and understand any network exposure before sending sensitive material.
Use it as research assistance, not a trading authority
A RAG chatbot can help surface passages in a defined research library, but neither retrieval nor fluent language generation verifies an investment claim. Treat its answer as a starting point: inspect the cited passage, check the source and publication date, and consult the original record for material facts. Do not infer that it predicts prices or selects profitable trades; no such performance evidence is established for this workflow.
Ollama’s README documents its project and local REST chat API. The local API is one component of the workflow; the quality of the research result still depends on the corpus, retrieval choices, and human verification.
