There is no single best local LLM tool: runtimes load and serve models, desktop apps make them easier to find and use, web interfaces connect to backends, document workspaces organize file-based Q&A, and agent tools add actions that require separate testing. Choose by the job you need done, your hardware, and how much setup you are willing to handle.

Which kind of local LLM tool do you need?

“Local LLM tool” covers several layers that are often mistaken for direct alternatives. A desktop app may package model discovery and chat; a runtime may focus on inference and an API; a web UI may sit on top of one or more backends. Document retrieval and agent actions add further components. Decide which layer you need before comparing names.

Need Options covered here What the distinction means
Run or serve a model Ollama; llama.cpp Ollama is presented by Open WebUI as an approachable local runner with native integration. llama.cpp is a lower-level C/C++ inference project with an API path; its repository lists an MIT license.
Desktop model discovery and chat LM Studio; Jan Both offer a visual desktop workflow. LM Studio focuses on discovering, downloading, and running local models; Jan describes choosing open models or connecting online models.
Ask questions about private files AnythingLLM A document workspace with local model and embedding paths, vector database configuration, and retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) workflows.
Use a self-hosted browser interface Open WebUI; LibreChat These interfaces connect users to model backends. Open WebUI describes native Ollama integration and support for other OpenAI-compatible APIs; LibreChat is characterized as a self-hosted multi-provider interface.
Run local agents or tools LM Studio Bionic; AnythingLLM agents and flows; OpenClaw with a compatible local backend Agent features depend on the product, backend, model, and task. A successful text reply alone does not prove reliable multi-step tool use.
Serve models at higher throughput MLX, vLLM, SGLang, or compatible custom endpoints These are serving and backend choices, not beginner-oriented desktop apps. Check endpoint and tool-call compatibility in the stack you plan to use.

This is a role-based map, not a benchmark ranking. The sources reviewed do not provide comparable speed, output-quality, or ease-of-use tests across these tools.

Which tool is the best fit for your workflow?

For a first local model with less command-line work

Start by considering LM Studio or Jan. They provide visual desktop workflows for finding and using models, while actual inference still depends on the chosen model and the computer running it. Jan also describes connecting online models, so using the app does not by itself mean every request stays local.

For a local runner or developer API

Consider Ollama for a comparatively approachable runner workflow and its native Open WebUI integration. Consider llama.cpp if you want a lower-level inference project and API path. Available evidence does not establish a universal speed winner between them.

Need document Q&A?

Consider AnythingLLM’s document workspace and RAG-oriented configuration. Plan to choose and configure both a model and an embedding setup: document Q&A is not simply ordinary chat with files attached, and retrieval quality depends on the full configuration. “Private” describes the product’s workflow and positioning, not a blanket guarantee about every model, integration, or data route.

For a self-hosted team interface

Consider Open WebUI when you want a browser-based interface connected to local models or compatible APIs. Its documentation lists multiple deployment paths, and its alternatives page describes native Ollama integration alongside other OpenAI-compatible providers. LibreChat is another self-hosted, multi-provider interface to consider when provider switching is central to the workflow.

For agentic work

LM Studio’s homepage presents Bionic as an agent for work and code; AnythingLLM documents agents and flows; OpenClaw documents several local backend options. Treat these as separate agent stacks rather than assuming that any local chat model can use tools reliably. Test the exact model, backend, permissions, and task before depending on multi-step actions.

For custom or higher-throughput serving

MLX, vLLM, SGLang, and compatible custom endpoints are backend choices for operators building or tuning a serving stack, rather than plug-and-play desktop recommendations. Confirm that the chosen endpoint works with the client and that tool-call behavior is supported where agents are involved.

How should you compare candidates?

Use these questions to narrow the shortlist; a feature name alone does not establish that two products behave alike.

  • Setup: Are you comfortable with a command line, Docker, or server administration, or do you want a desktop app?
  • Model and backend: Does the tool support the model format and runtime you intend to use? If you need an API, can your client connect to it?
  • Hardware and context: Can your machine handle the selected model and the context length you actually need, alongside the runtime and other applications?
  • Documents: Do you need ingestion, embeddings, a vector database, and retrieval workflows, or is ordinary chat enough?
  • Tools and agents: Does the exact model/backend combination support the tool calls you need, and can you limit what those tools are allowed to do?
  • Data routing: Does the configuration use only local services, or does it also call external providers, web search, telemetry, or other services?
  • Deployment and licensing: Will you run it on a personal computer, a server, or for a team? Check the current license terms for every component, particularly before commercial reuse.

What hardware and storage should you plan for?

There is no general RAM threshold that makes every local model usable. OpenClaw’s documentation says memory needs vary with model weights, context size, runtime, and other activity on the host. Its curated recipes use a 64K context; the smallest recipe lists an 8 GiB host-memory floor, but the documentation cautions that meeting a floor does not guarantee that a model will fit comfortably or run quickly. That figure applies to the recipe, not to local LLMs generally.

For an agent, leave room for more than the model itself: the prompt, tool definitions, conversation history, and generated output all affect the workload. OpenClaw recommends testing real tasks before making a model the default. Its managed local setup checks available RAM, supported GPU memory, and disk space and shows model and download details before fetching a model.

Model files make disk capacity a practical setup consideration. External storage can provide space for those files, but it does not replace compute memory or, by itself, make inference faster.

What does “local” mean for privacy and agent safety?

Open WebUI says a self-hosted deployment keeps data on the user’s own infrastructure and can connect to local backends as well as external APIs. The actual data path depends on configuration. Check whether the setup enables a cloud provider, web search, telemetry, or another remote service before treating a workflow as offline.

Local inference also does not automatically make an agent safe. OpenClaw’s documentation states: “Local models do not provide hosted providers’ safety filters.” It advises keeping tool permissions and prompt-injection defenses appropriate to the model and task. Give an agent only the access it needs, and verify its behavior before allowing consequential actions.

Do usage figures show which tool is best?

No. Ollama’s official homepage reported 9M+ installs a month, 1B+ cumulative model downloads, and 200T+ tokens served when checked for this article on October 7, 2026. These are vendor-reported figures; the page did not provide a separate methodology for the cumulative download figure in the material reviewed. They indicate figures the vendor publishes, not independent adoption measurements, comparative quality, or a reason one tool will fit your workflow better.

What to choose

For a visual first experience, shortlist LM Studio and Jan. For a runner and API workflow, compare Ollama with llama.cpp. For document Q&A, start with AnythingLLM; for a self-hosted browser interface, evaluate Open WebUI or LibreChat. Choose an agent stack only after checking the exact model’s tool behavior and setting appropriate permissions. None is a universal winner, and the available sources do not establish a cross-tool benchmark.

Product features and model catalogs change. The official pages considered here were checked on October 7, 2026; Open WebUI’s alternatives page said it was last updated in August 2026. Jan’s page displayed a v0.8.4 announcement at that time, which should not be read as a claim that this remains its latest version. Check current product documentation and license terms before deploying or reusing components commercially.
