There is no single reliable detector that can tell you whether a local LLM agent has “gone rogue.” The practical approach is to define what the agent is allowed to do, independently record what it actually does, alert on actions outside that boundary, and limit the damage it could cause.
What counts as a rogue agent?
Judge an agent by its actions and authority, not by claims about its hidden intent. A tool call can be legitimate in general yet still exceed the permissions or scope approved for a particular task. Treat activity as suspicious when it reaches unapproved tools, files, identities, destinations, or impacts.
An agent can affect local files, invoke commands, contact services, or trigger changes in systems connected to its tools. The security question is therefore not just what the model says, but what the surrounding application and processes let it do—and what side effects occur.

How do I know if an AI agent is running on my computer?
Start with the operating system’s process and application views, then identify the process that launched the agent and the identity under which it runs. The exact interface and terminology vary by operating system and by how the agent was installed; there is no universal UI path or command established for every setup.

- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your Security Key C NFC via USB-C and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC) to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required.
- TRUSTED PASSKEY TECHNOLOGY: Uses the latest passkey standards (FIDO2/WebAuthn & FIDO U2F) but does not support One-Time Passwords. For complex needs, check out the YubiKey 5 Series.
- BUILT TO LAST: Made from tough, waterproof, and crush-resistant materials. Manufactured in Sweden and programmed in the USA with the highest security standards.
- Identify the agent application or process, its parent or launcher, and its command arguments where available.
- Check which operating-system account runs it and whether that account has administrative or other elevated privileges.
- Inventory the tools it can invoke, including shell or command tools, file tools, APIs, and local MCP servers.
- Establish which directories it can read or write, what credentials it can access, and which network destinations it needs.
A process name alone does not show what an agent can access or what it has done. Use it as the starting point for an access and activity review, not as a verdict.
How can I monitor what an AI agent does?
Keep an activity record outside the agent’s control. Application logs can explain a run, but they may be incomplete or alterable by the application or agent; do not rely on them as the sole record. OWASP’s AI Agent Security and related secure-development guidance recommend recording tool calls, commands, file writes, and network requests with context such as identity, session, and outcome.
| Record | What it helps establish | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Agent or application tool-call logs | Which tools were requested, with parameters and session context, if those details are logged. | Useful for explanation, but not an independent audit trail if the agent or its operator can change or suppress the logs. |
| Operating-system process and command telemetry | Which processes launched and which command arguments were used. | Does not by itself show every action inside an application or whether a request was authorized. |
| File-change records | Which files were written or changed, and when, where that telemetry is available. | File access and file changes are different events; a write record alone will not reveal every read. |
| Network records | Which destinations were contacted, where network telemetry provides that visibility. | A destination record may not identify the data sent or explain whether the connection was in scope. |
| Separate audit storage | Preserves records for later review when logs are sent to a central or otherwise separate system. | Protect the records and redact secrets and personal data; retaining sensitive arguments verbatim can create a new exposure. |
For useful investigations, correlate records with the operating-system identity, initiating user, session, timestamps, tool or command arguments, outcomes, and resulting changes. Send the audit data somewhere the agent cannot rewrite. Agent-generated logs can supplement that record, but should not replace it.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhich activity should trigger an alert?
Build alerts around the agent’s approved baseline rather than treating every unusual event as proof of malicious behavior. A notification is a reason to investigate, not a finding about intent.

- POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The YubiKey 5 NFC is the most versatile physical passkey, protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts
- WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with popular accounts like Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single YubiKey 5 NFC secures 100+ of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more
- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your YubiKey 5 NFC via USB and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC), to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required
- MOST SECURE PASSKEY: Supports FIDO2/WebAuthn, FIDO U2F, Yubico OTP, OATH-TOTP/HOTP, Smart card (PIV), and OpenPGP. That means it’s versatile, working almost anywhere you need it
- PRIMARY & SPARE KEYS: Just like having a spare house key, we recommend buying two YubiKeys - one for daily use and one as a spare. That way you’ll never get locked out of your accounts
- Attempts to read credential files or use credentials outside their approved scope.
- Connections to destinations that are not on the task’s approved list.
- Large or unexpectedly broad file reads, especially outside the directories needed for the task.
- New or changed MCP servers, tools, or tool definitions.
- Unusual tool-call frequency, administrative queries, or use of elevated privileges.
- Repeated attempts to bypass an approval step.
- Changes to agent instruction files or CI configuration that were not part of the approved work.
Tune the rules to the specific task: an expected network request for one job may be an out-of-scope request for another. Preserve enough event context to distinguish an approved action from a deviation.
Can an AI agent access my files or send data out?
It can do so when its tools, process permissions, credentials, mounts, or network access allow it. A sandbox or application permission prompt may constrain only some paths. Check separately whether shell commands, file tools, MCP servers, subprocesses, APIs, and network egress are actually covered by the restriction.
Reduce access before relying on monitoring: run the agent under a separate low-privilege identity, expose only the directories required for the task, and avoid mounting a home directory or making production credentials available. Restrict outbound network access to destinations the task needs. Use short-lived, narrowly scoped credentials where possible, and require a person to approve destructive, financial, or data-sharing operations. Approval should be enforced by trusted execution or downstream systems, not left to the model’s judgment; show the reviewer the exact tool arguments.

What should I check in a local MCP server?
Treat a local MCP server as code running with the permissions granted to its process. A stdio connection avoids a listening endpoint, but it does not restrict the server’s filesystem access, network access, or credentials.

- Verify the publisher and source, and review the launch command and permissions the server needs.
- Inspect the tools it exposes and their descriptions; do not assume a tool is safe merely because its name sounds narrow.
- Pin reviewed server versions and maintain an approved server registry. Revisit approval when a server or its tool definitions change.
- Limit filesystem access to necessary paths and disable network access unless the task requires it.
- Validate tool inputs and outputs. Avoid unrestricted shell execution and arbitrary model-supplied URLs.
OWASP’s MCP Security guidance recommends treating tool access as a security boundary. The relevant check is what the server process can actually reach, not only what the agent interface says it is permitted to do.
How do I test the boundaries safely?
Test in a resettable environment with no production credentials or valuable data. Assess actual effects and authorization decisions, not just the final text returned by the model. A refusal or reassuring response does not prove that the system blocked the underlying action.
- Try direct and indirect prompt-injection scenarios.
- Check whether the agent can access secrets or invoke tools outside the approved task.
- Test data-disclosure and exfiltration routes, including destinations the task should not reach.
- Probe sandbox boundaries and verify which execution paths—shell, file tools, MCP, subprocesses, and network—are constrained.
- Review the resulting logs, permissions, destinations, and changes to confirm that the controls worked.
OWASP’s AI and LLM testing guidance names promptfoo as an example of a probing framework. That is a testing aid, not a local host-monitoring product.
How do I stop or contain an agent that exceeds its scope?
Use the host and deployment’s established incident procedure; stop and isolate the process without destroying the records needed to understand what happened. Exact stop, isolation, and credential-revocation commands differ across operating systems and deployments, so a universal command sequence would be unsafe to assume.

- Stop or isolate the agent using the established procedure for that host or environment.
- Revoke or rotate credentials the agent could access, and block unauthorized network egress.
- Preserve the independent activity records, relevant configuration, and approved baseline.
- Review file changes and downstream-system actions, then undo or remediate unauthorized effects through the responsible system’s process.
- Update permissions, tool approvals, or network policy before returning the agent to use.
Monitoring reveals and helps investigate unwanted actions; it does not prevent them by itself. Use least privilege, restricted execution, egress controls, scoped credentials, and human approval to reduce the consequences of a failure.
How to choose monitoring and containment controls
No single layer covers every activity path. Compare controls by what they observe or block and by who can alter the evidence.
| Control dimension | Question to ask |
|---|---|
| Visibility | Does it show only agent and tool logs, or also operating-system processes, file activity, and network traffic? |
| Independence | Can the agent or its operator alter, delete, or suppress the record? |
| Coverage | Does it cover shell commands, file tools, MCP servers, APIs, subprocesses, and outbound connections? |
| Effect | Does it block an action, record it, or merely flag it afterward? |
| Isolation | Does the restricted shell, container, VM, or disposable environment still expose host files, credentials, or reachable services? |
| Forensic value | Can you connect identity, time, session, arguments, outcome, and resulting changes without retaining unnecessary secrets? |
OWASP guidance accessed on October 7, 2026, provides security recommendations and test approaches, not evidence that a particular machine is compromised or that any detector catches every unwanted action. It does not establish a universal local detection product or guarantee complete sandboxing.
