You can set up Gemma as a first-pass helper for your parent’s everyday computer questions, but start with their computer and the problems they want help solving—not with a download. A local setup requires choosing both a Gemma model and an app or runtime to run it, and the right combination depends on the computer’s operating system and available resources. Treat its answers as suggestions to review together, not as instructions from a technician.
Start with your parent’s computer and support needs
Before choosing a model, ask what your parent wants help with: understanding a settings screen, learning computer terms, or working through a low-risk routine task. Then note the computer’s make and model, operating system, available memory, free storage, and whether your parent is comfortable installing and opening an app. Consider language and accessibility needs, too.
Those details matter because Gemma variants differ in capabilities and compute requirements. Google’s Gemma getting-started guide discusses both when choosing a model; it does not establish which model will perform well on an unknown computer. Avoid assuming a particular model size will fit or run smoothly until you check the machine and try the setup on it.
Choose a model and a way to run it
“Local Gemma” involves two choices: the model variant and the execution framework. Google’s run guide lists options including LM Studio, Ollama, llama.cpp, MLX, and LiteRT-LM. LM Studio is described there as a desktop app for downloading and chatting with Gemma; the other options have different workflows. There is no universally best choice established for every family or computer.

Use the parent’s operating system, hardware support, comfort with installing software, and the family’s ability to maintain the setup to narrow the options. Smaller or quantized variants may be easier to fit on constrained devices, but that does not establish their speed or answer quality on this particular computer. Google’s Gemma 3 quantized-models overview describes quantized variants and supported inference options. Check compatibility and test the chosen combination on the actual machine before relying on it.
Install it together and test low-risk questions
Once you have checked compatibility, use the framework’s own installation instructions to download the runtime and a model. Setup steps vary by framework and operating system, so do not assume a single installation path applies to all of them. Keep a note of the model and runtime names and a simple way to reopen or restart the app.

Try harmless questions together first. For example, ask it to explain a computer term in plain language or describe what a visible settings option generally does. Have your parent check that the explanation makes sense before acting on it. If an answer is unclear, contradictory, or asks for a consequential change, stop and verify it through a trusted person or an official support channel.

Set safety rules before using it for computer problems
Agree that the assistant is for explanations and low-risk suggestions—not account recovery, security decisions, financial activity, or repair of failing hardware. The parent should remain involved and understand any action before it happens.

- Never enter passwords, verification codes, payment details, or sensitive personal records into the chat.
- Do not let the assistant make purchases, change security settings, install unfamiliar software, grant remote access, or delete files without the parent’s informed review.
- For account access, suspected scams, payment issues, security alerts, or possible data loss, stop and contact a trusted human or the service’s official support channel.
Will Gemma work offline?
Google DeepMind describes Gemma 3n as “Privacy-first, offline-ready.” That is product positioning for Gemma 3n, not a guarantee that every Gemma model, runtime, or workflow works offline. A particular setup may need a connection to download its app or model, and you should verify what requires a network connection in the runtime you choose. Do not assume that “local” alone proves every part of the setup stays offline or private.
