Neither local co-op nor online co-op is universally better. Choose local (or “couch”) co-op when everyone can share a room and the game supports the required players and controllers. Choose online co-op when people are in different places and the title provides native online play. The deciding factors are your group’s location, the exact game and platform, player limits, hardware, and tolerance for connection problems.

Local co-op and online co-op in plain English

What local or couch co-op means

Local multiplayer puts players in the same physical space. On a compatible Nintendo Switch 2 or Nintendo Switch system, for example, people can play together on one console, using the console’s controllers or additional compatible controllers. Nintendo also uses local multiplayer for nearby-system play: compatible games can link up to eight systems when players are together in the same room. The exact player count, system-link option, and controller requirement vary by game.

“Couch co-op” usually means the shared-screen version of local multiplayer, but people sometimes use “local co-op” more broadly for any nearby multiplayer mode. Check the game’s feature list rather than relying on the label. A title may support local versus play but not cooperative missions, or allow only two local players even though its online mode supports more.

What online co-op means

Online co-op connects players who are not in the same room. Each participant uses a connected device, and the game’s servers or platform networking bring the session together. This is the practical choice for friends or relatives in different homes, cities, or countries, but only if the specific title and platform support online multiplayer.

A store page that says “multiplayer” is not enough evidence. Look for the precise mode—online co-op, local co-op, shared-screen co-op, system link, or a combination—and confirm the player limit for the edition and platform you plan to use.

Quick comparison

Factor Local/couch co-op Online co-op
Where players are Usually the same room; nearby-system modes require players to be together locally. Different locations, using connected devices.
Game requirement The title must support local co-op or the relevant local multiplayer mode. The title and platform must provide online co-op. Native online support is not implied by a local mode.
Hardware One compatible system may be enough, but extra players can require extra compatible controllers. Some games use multiple nearby systems. Each player generally needs a compatible device, the game or permitted access to it, and a network connection.
Player count Limited by the game, screen layout, console, and available controllers. Nintendo says compatible Switch games can link up to eight systems locally. Limited by the game, platform, subscription or account rules, and network architecture.
Responsiveness Inputs stay in the room, so internet latency is not part of the session. Performance depends on each connection and the game’s networking; lag, disconnections, or voice issues are possible.
Social feel Everyone shares a physical room and can react immediately to what happens on screen. Players communicate through voice, text, or built-in signals from separate setups.

When local co-op is the better fit

Your group can meet in person

Local play is the simplest option when everyone is already together. There is no need to coordinate separate internet connections, online accounts, or voice-chat equipment. Reactions, explanations, and informal conversation happen naturally, which can be especially useful for young players or anyone who finds online communication awkward.

You want a shared-screen experience

A single screen makes the group’s information visible to everyone. That can support games built around planning, passing a controller, or watching another player’s mistake and responding immediately. It can also create friction: a crowded screen, split-screen visibility, or disagreements about camera control may make a particular game less comfortable locally.

Your internet access is unreliable

Local co-op avoids the connection quality required for online sessions. It is useful at a gathering, in a room with weak Wi-Fi, or when one player’s network is subject to data limits. You still need a game and hardware that support local play; a poor internet connection does not turn an online-only title into a local one.

You can supply compatible controllers

One console does not automatically mean one controller is enough. Nintendo notes that additional Joy-Con or other compatible controllers may be needed depending on the player count. Before buying hardware, check the exact console model, the game’s controller rules, and whether each player needs a complete controller or can use a single compatible half-controller. An “extra controller for local co-op” is useful only when the game and platform recognize it.

When online co-op is the better fit

Players live far apart

Online play removes the travel and scheduling burden of getting everyone into one room. It is the natural choice for groups separated by distance, provided the game supports the platforms and accounts your friends use.

Everyone has a suitable personal setup

Online sessions work well when each player already has a compatible console, computer, or handheld, plus a stable connection and a way to communicate. The total cost can be higher than bringing one console to a friend’s house, but each person keeps an independent view and control scheme.

The game is designed for larger or persistent groups

Some online games are built around drop-in sessions, progression that continues between play dates, or teams larger than a shared screen can comfortably accommodate. Check the published player limit and whether the mode is genuinely cooperative rather than a competitive multiplayer playlist.

Your group prefers separate screens

Individual screens can reduce arguments over camera control and let each player adjust accessibility, display, and control settings. They also make it easier for someone to step away without blocking the whole room. The trade-off is that conversation and shared attention require deliberate voice or text communication.

The game’s feature list matters more than the label

Before choosing a mode, verify all of the following for the exact title, edition, and platform:

Nintendo specifically cautions that multiplayer features vary by game. A game’s box, store page, or platform filter can expose a mode but still omit details that matter to your group, so inspect the title’s full feature description and player-count field.

Steam Remote Play Together: the important hybrid case

Steam Remote Play Together can make some local multiplayer games playable with friends who are elsewhere. It is not the same as a game having native online co-op.

How it works

  1. The host owns and runs a supported local multiplayer game on Steam.
  2. The host invites Steam friends through Remote Play Together.
  3. Steam streams the host’s video and audio to the invited players and sends their controller or keyboard inputs back to the host.
  4. The group plays the local multiplayer session as a streamed, shared experience.

Steam says one player owns and runs the game. Up to four players can join in the usual case, with more possible when connections are fast. The feature applies only to supported games; it does not add online co-op to every local title, and it does not eliminate the host’s need to run the game.

What the host and guests need to expect

  • The host’s computer does the game processing and sends the stream, so host hardware and upload capacity matter.
  • Guests’ inputs travel back to the host, which introduces latency that is absent from ordinary same-room play.
  • Video quality, audio delay, controller recognition, and voice communication can vary with connection conditions.
  • Because the session is based on local multiplayer, the game’s original local player limit still matters.
  • Joining beyond four players is explicitly dependent on fast connections, not a guaranteed capacity.

Use Remote Play Together when the title is supported and the group accepts streamed local play. If a game has robust native online co-op, that route may avoid the host-centered streaming constraint; if it has neither, Remote Play Together cannot create support where the platform does not offer it.

Connection and communication trade-offs

Local play removes internet latency, not every problem

Players in one room do not depend on an online server for their inputs, but local sessions can still suffer from controller pairing failures, a missing adapter, an overcrowded screen, or a game that supports fewer local players than expected. Test every controller before the group arrives.

Online play needs a plan for network failures

Remote groups should decide who hosts, how they will communicate if in-game voice fails, and what happens when someone disconnects. Wired connections or strong Wi-Fi near the playing device can help, but no setup guarantees zero lag. A player with unstable service can affect matchmaking, voice chat, or the whole session depending on the game’s networking model.

Social presence is not a universal winner

It is tempting to assume that sharing a sofa always feels more social. A 2019 IEEE Conference on Games study with 92 participants compared co-located and separated versions of a self-developed two-player cooperative virtual-reality game. In that specific experiment, the remote condition produced higher reported cooperative social presence, communication quality, and performance measures. The result should not be generalized to ordinary couch games: the hardware, task, and study design were narrow, and the paper also reviews earlier work that sometimes favored co-located play. Your group’s personalities, game design, and communication habits matter more than a blanket rule.

Costs and equipment to account for

Local session costs

  • A compatible console or computer and a copy of a game that supports local co-op.
  • Additional compatible controllers when the built-in or included controls do not cover the planned player count.
  • Potential accessories such as a larger display, charging equipment, or a second system for nearby-system play.

Do not purchase controllers until you have checked the platform model and the game’s supported controller combinations. Extra hardware cannot add a mode that the game does not implement.

Online session costs

  • A compatible device and game access for each participant, subject to that platform’s sharing rules.
  • Reliable internet service for every player.
  • Any platform account or online-service requirement listed for the title and region.
  • A headset or another communication method if coordination is important.

Online co-op may spread the hardware cost across several households, while local co-op may minimize the number of game copies and devices. Compare the complete setup for your group rather than the game price alone.

A practical decision process

  1. Map the group’s locations. If everyone can be in one room, evaluate local first. If not, eliminate local-only plans unless a supported nearby-system or streaming feature bridges the distance.
  2. Write down each person’s hardware. Include console or computer model, controller type, operating system where relevant, and internet quality.
  3. Check the exact game modes. Record local player count, online player count, campaign restrictions, and whether cross-platform play is supported.
  4. Calculate controllers and copies. For local play, count compatible controllers. For online play, count devices, accounts, and any required copies or service access.
  5. Choose the communication method. In a room, ordinary conversation may be enough. Online groups should test voice chat or agree on an alternative.
  6. Run a short test session. Invite every intended player, pair controllers, verify the correct mode, and check latency before committing to a long campaign or purchase.

Group-by-group recommendations

Family or roommates in one home

Start with local co-op if the game supports the desired number of players and you can provide compatible controllers. It minimizes setup and keeps everyone in the same conversation. Choose online only when the title’s local mode is missing, too small, or uncomfortable on one screen.

Friends in different cities

Choose native online co-op when the game supports all of your platforms and the party size fits. Confirm voice options and a backup plan for disconnects. Consider Steam Remote Play Together only for a supported local game whose shared-screen design suits the group.

A mixed group with one strong gaming PC

Remote Play Together can be an economical experiment when the host owns a supported Steam game and guests have compatible controllers or input devices. Expect host-dependent performance and test the connection before assuming the session will feel like native online play.

Players with limited or unstable internet

Prefer local co-op when meeting is practical. If distance makes that impossible, select a game known to tolerate your connections and keep the party small; do not treat a platform’s “multiplayer” label as a performance guarantee.

What developers’ numbers do—and do not—tell you

The 2025 Unity Gaming Report, based on a 2024 Cint survey of 300 respondents, reported that 28% said they were developing couch co-op games, 48% local multiplayer, and 99% online multiplayer. These categories can overlap, and the respondents describe developer activity rather than player preference. The figures therefore cannot establish that online co-op is more popular with players or better for a particular group.

The same report says 69% of multiplayer-game respondents were creating asymmetrical experiences. That statistic concerns a design approach, not a local-versus-online comparison, so it should not be used to choose your mode.

Industry practitioners quoted in the report offer useful context rather than proof. Daniel Carmichael of Fika Productions said the pandemic highlighted both couch and online cooperative games as ways to connect. Thierry Boulanger of Sabotage Studio described couch co-op’s shared reactions as a way to intensify joy. Those observations explain why both formats remain valuable; they do not make one format universally superior.

Pre-purchase checklist

  • Can every intended player be in the same room, or must the session work remotely?
  • Does the exact game edition support cooperative play in the mode you want?
  • What are the local and online player limits for the specific platform?
  • Are extra compatible controllers required?
  • Do different platforms support cross-play, if your group needs it?
  • Does the game require separate copies, accounts, or an online service?
  • Who hosts, and is that person’s connection and hardware suitable?
  • How will the group communicate if in-game voice chat is unavailable?
  • Can you test the mode before buying additional hardware or committing to a campaign?

Bottom line: choose for your group, not by a universal ranking

Pick local co-op when proximity, shared-room interaction, and minimal network dependence are your priorities—and when the game supports enough local players and controllers. Pick online co-op when distance is the main obstacle and the title provides a native online route that matches your platforms and party size. Treat Steam Remote Play Together as a useful, supported-game bridge between those formats, not as universal online functionality. The better choice is the one your group can reliably launch, control, and enjoy together.
