If a local AI workbench suddenly has an empty model list, missing chats, or a broken connection, don’t reset it yet. The interface, model server, downloaded models, connection settings, and saved application data are separate parts; one can fail while the others remain intact. First identify which part changed, then use recovery steps that match how it was installed.

Start by identifying what changed

Before running commands or reinstalling anything, collect the details a coworker would need to distinguish a missing component from a broken connection. Ask:

  • Which workbench and model server are involved? For example, is the interface Open WebUI, LM Studio, or another application, and is the server Ollama, LM Studio, or something else?
  • What operating system is it running on, and how was each component installed: desktop app, Docker, Python, Kubernetes, Podman, or another method?
  • What exactly is missing: the interface, model list, a loaded model, chats, settings, or the connection between the interface and server?
  • What changed immediately beforehand: an update, restart, configuration edit, reinstall, container recreation, or deletion?

These answers matter because a reset is not one universal procedure. For instance, Open WebUI documents separate installation paths, and its Docker data handling is not interchangeable with instructions for a desktop app or Python installation.

Match the symptom to the likely component

What you see What to check first
The interface will not open Check whether the application or its container/service is running, and whether the failure began after an update or configuration change.
The interface opens, but the model list is empty Check that the model server is running and that the interface points to the right endpoint. An empty list alone does not show that model files were deleted.
A model is absent or no longer loaded Distinguish a model that is not currently loaded from one that is no longer available on the server. Check the server’s model management before removing or reinstalling files.
Chats, users, or settings are missing Find the application’s persistent data directory or volume and confirm which deployment and data source the current instance is using.
The interface cannot connect to a local server Verify the server status, configured endpoint, and whether the interface can reach that address from its own environment.

Protect persistent data before changing the installation

Back up the workbench’s persistent data using the documented procedure for its installation before taking an action that could remove a data directory or volume. In Open WebUI’s documented Docker setup, a persistent volume mounted at /app/backend/data stores chats, users, and settings; its quick start links to backup and restore guidance: Open WebUI Quick Start.

Open WebUI distinguishes removing a container from removing its persistent data volume. Its uninstall instructions make volume removal optional and warn that removing it deletes all data. Do not treat a container recreation as proof that the saved data is safe—or delete the volume as a routine cleanup step.

Before changing an Open WebUI Docker deployment, also check which image tag is in use, whether its WEBUI_SECRET_KEY is persistent, and whether the data volume is shared between development and production builds. Open WebUI recommends pinning a specific release for production rather than relying on floating tags, warns that a non-persistent secret key can log users out when recreating a container, and cautions that migrations on a shared development/production volume can prevent rollback. These are deployment-specific checks, not universal requirements for every local AI application.

Check the server and connection before investigating model files

  1. Confirm the local model server is running. Check the server application or service itself before changing the workbench’s model configuration.
  2. Verify the configured endpoint. Use the address documented for the server and the network environment in which the interface runs. For example, Open WebUI’s OpenAI-compatible provider guide gives LM Studio’s local endpoint as http://localhost:1234/v1: Open WebUI OpenAI-Compatible Providers.
  3. Check whether the interface can reach that endpoint. A host-local address may not mean the same thing from inside a container. In Docker, a container’s localhost can refer to the container itself rather than the host. Follow the Docker-specific host connection guidance for the actual setup instead of copying a localhost URL blindly.
  4. Only then inspect model availability. If the server is reachable but the model is still absent, check that server’s model list and management controls before assuming files were deleted or reinstalling them.

As another example, Ollama’s FAQ says its default bind address is 127.0.0.1 on port 11434; the OLLAMA_HOST setting changes the bind address. Those values apply to Ollama’s documented defaults, not every server or network: Ollama FAQ.

Choose recovery by what it touches

Prefer the smallest reversible action that addresses the identified component. A restart, reinstall, or reset is not automatically safe: its data-loss risk depends on the target and installation method.

Recovery choice Component affected Persistent-data risk and reversibility When it fits
Check service status and endpoint Server or connection configuration Does not require deleting persistent data; configuration changes should be recorded so they can be reversed. The interface is present but cannot connect, or its model list is empty.
Restart the relevant app or service The interface or model server being restarted No data safety guarantee applies to every installation; confirm what the app persists before proceeding. A service appears stopped or unresponsive, and its specific restart method is known.
Recreate a Docker container while retaining its data volume Open WebUI container/runtime, not necessarily its stored data Distinct from deleting the volume, but check the image version, persistent secret key, and volume mapping first. The documented Docker deployment needs container-level recovery and its data volume is confirmed.
Reinstall an application or server Installed application or server; effects on model files and settings depend on the installer and data locations Potentially disruptive. Back up and verify data locations first; do not assume reinstalling preserves or restores them. Less disruptive checks have failed and the affected installation method has a documented reinstall path.
Delete a persistent data directory or volume Stored application data Destructive. Open WebUI warns that removing its Docker data volume deletes its data. Only when deletion is intentional, the correct data has been backed up, and the consequences are understood.

Understand what can work offline

Local inference does not mean every feature is available without an internet connection. LM Studio documents that chats with downloaded models, document chat, and local-server inference can work offline. Searching for models, downloading models or runtimes, and checking for updates require connectivity: LM Studio Offline Operation.

For Ollama, the vendor states, “We don’t see your prompts or data when you run locally.” That statement is about local operation, not every feature, cloud-hosted model, or third-party connection. Ollama’s FAQ also documents opting out of its cloud features with disable_ollama_cloud or OLLAMA_NO_CLOUD=1; after changing the configuration, restart Ollama. Disabling cloud features also removes cloud models and web search, according to the FAQ.

Use an installation-specific reset plan

Once the affected component is clear and important data is backed up, follow the reset or recovery procedure for the exact deployment: Docker instructions for the relevant container setup, Python instructions for a Python installation, or the application’s own guidance for a desktop installation. Do not combine commands from different installation methods or remove a volume, data directory, or model store just because the interface is broken. If the symptom remains ambiguous, pause and gather the installation details rather than escalating to a destructive reset.
