A local AI assistant can keep prompts away from a remote inference provider—but downloading open weights does not, by itself, make an application private. Model downloads, telemetry, logs, cloud services, network exposure, and tool access all affect where data goes. Build privacy into the whole data path, then choose a model and runtime your machine can support.
What does “local” protect—and what does it not?
With local inference, the model runs on a device or infrastructure you control rather than sending each prompt to a remote inference API. That can remove one important disclosure point. Hugging Face’s Use AI Models Locally documentation describes privacy as a benefit of local apps; OpenAI’s gpt-oss help page distinguishes self-hosted use from managed hosting. Neither distinction establishes that every component of an application stays local.
Map the complete path a user’s information can take. A prompt may be processed locally while retrieved documents, embeddings, application logs, crash reports, telemetry, backups, or a tool call go elsewhere. Model downloads and update checks also involve network access. A local server can expose an interface beyond the device if it is configured to listen on a network address.
Write down the boundary before choosing a model
For each data type, record where it is created, processed, stored, backed up, and transmitted. Include prompts, uploaded files, retrieved passages, embeddings, outputs, logs, and tool results. Identify every cloud API, managed host, analytics service, and update mechanism the application uses. If a component is not known to stay on-device or on infrastructure you control, do not describe the system as fully local.

How do I choose an open-weight model and runtime?
Begin with the task, not a hardware shopping list. Private note search, code assistance, and document summarization place different demands on language support, context, and output quality. Check the specific model card for its supported languages, modality, context, runtime compatibility, license, and usage policy. “Open-weight” is not a single license or permission set.
Choose the runtime to match the model and your control needs
Hugging Face documents a model-page workflow for supported local applications. For a more developer-controlled route, its Transformers llama.cpp integration documentation describes local C/C++ inference using GGUF model files, with command-line and server workflows. Compatibility depends on the model architecture and the runtime; a model being available as open weights does not mean every local application can load it.

Use the local-app route when a supported application fits your needs and you want its documented workflow. Consider llama.cpp when its model support and command-line or server interface suit your implementation. The documentation cited here does not establish a measured performance or ease-of-use winner between those routes.

Check the license and policy for the exact model
Review the terms attached to the model you intend to deploy, including any acceptable-use or usage policy. For example, OpenAI describes gpt-oss as licensed under Apache 2.0 and also subject to its usage policy. That is specific to gpt-oss; it is not a general rule for open-weight models.

What hardware do I need to run an LLM locally?
There is no universal minimum specification established by the documentation cited here. The model, its size and format, the workload, and the runtime all affect whether a machine can load it and how quickly it responds. Hugging Face identifies hardware as a constraint on speed, while the llama.cpp workflow supports quantization and memory mapping; those features do not guarantee a particular speed or output quality.
Choose a candidate model first, then test it on the intended machine with the actual task and context length. Check whether it loads, whether the response time is acceptable, and whether the output meets the task’s needs. Treat a quantized GGUF variant as a separate candidate to evaluate rather than assuming that lower resource use preserves the quality you need. The available documentation does not provide comparative speed, memory, or quality figures for these choices.

How do I secure model files and runtime dependencies?
Model artifacts and the code used to load them are part of the application’s security boundary. Hugging Face’s Transformers Security Policy recommends Safetensors when available. It also advises inspecting repository code before enabling trust_remote_code; if remote code is required, pin a revision so later repository changes do not silently change the code you execute.
- Inspect the model repository. Confirm the artifact format, model card, license, usage policy, and runtime requirements before downloading.
- Prefer Safetensors when available. If the chosen model requires a different loading path or remote code, understand what will execute and why before enabling it.
- Review remote code and pin its revision. Do not enable
trust_remote_code=Truewithout inspecting the relevant modeling files. Pin a commit or revision when remote code is needed. - Inventory dependencies and updates. Track model assets and runtime packages as application dependencies, and review changes before updating them.
Safetensors does not secure the entire application: runtime packages, server settings, tools, and data handling still need their own controls.

How should I keep a local AI server and assistant tools safe?
A local inference API is still a server. The llama.cpp server README documents a localhost default and discusses configuration for local-network and public deployments, including binding, CORS, API keys, and reverse proxies. Check the settings in your actual deployment rather than assuming that “local” means inaccessible from other devices.
- Bind address: Confirm which interfaces the server listens on. Keep it on localhost unless other devices need access.
- CORS: Set allowed origins deliberately; do not treat a broad origin policy as a substitute for authentication.
- Authentication and proxying: If access crosses a device or network boundary, configure the authentication and reverse-proxy controls appropriate to that deployment.
- Tools and files: Give the assistant only the file and tool access required for its task. Consider what a prompt or retrieved content could cause a tool to read, change, or transmit.
For a public deployment, follow the server documentation’s deployment-specific configuration guidance; a localhost default is not a public-deployment security plan.
Quick Recap
Which local AI setup should I choose?
| Choice | What to compare | What the cited documentation establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Supported local application or llama.cpp developer setup | Model and runtime support, setup effort, interface, hardware compatibility, and control | Hugging Face documents both local-app workflows and llama.cpp; it does not provide a measured performance or ease-of-use comparison. |
| Full-precision weights or quantized GGUF | Memory use, speed, task quality, and runtime support | llama.cpp documentation describes GGUF quantization and memory mapping; it does not establish comparative speed or quality figures. |
| Self-hosted or managed hosting | Data path, operator access, residency, cost, maintenance, and availability | OpenAI’s gpt-oss help page distinguishes self-hosted and managed hosting; privacy behavior and terms vary by provider. |
| Safetensors or a loading path that executes code | Artifact handling and code-execution risk | Hugging Face recommends Safetensors and review of remote code; the artifact format does not secure the rest of the runtime. |
How can I verify the privacy boundary before deployment?
- Trace a realistic request. Follow a prompt through inference, retrieval, storage, logging, backups, and any tool calls. Note every component that handles it.
- Check network behavior. Identify model download and update traffic, cloud API calls, managed hosting, and any telemetry or crash-reporting path. Confirm which are enabled in the deployed configuration.
- Inspect exposure and permissions. Verify the server’s bind address, CORS, authentication, and proxy configuration. Check that tools cannot reach files or services beyond their intended scope.
- Test the deployed configuration. Confirm that the application behaves as documented when offline and that no feature silently depends on a cloud service. A successful offline test does not prove that data is never transmitted when connectivity returns.
- Keep the record current. Revisit the data-flow map when changing the model, runtime, integrations, or hosting arrangement. Model policies and documentation can change.
