One user’s experience suggests that local AI models can be useful alternatives to ChatGPT and Gemini for selected tasks, but it does not establish that they are more reliable overall. In an August 27, 2026, first-person account for Android Police, Faith Leroux used LM Studio on a Windows 11 desktop and preferred different downloadable models for different kinds of work. The account is a practical example, not a controlled comparison or a measured reliability ranking.

What the comparison tested—and what it did not

Leroux described exploring local models for privacy and using a recently upgraded desktop with 32 GB of RAM. The setup included DeepSeek-R1-0528-Qwen3-8B for coding and homework-like questions, and Gemma 4 12B for broader or image-oriented tasks. The author compared responses to ChatGPT and Gemini while using the models for learning, including questions about making game assets in Unreal Engine.

That account supports a narrow conclusion: those models seemed useful to that author for those tasks on that computer. It does not provide a fixed set of prompts, a scoring rubric, blinded evaluation, number of trials, or measured accuracy rates. “Most reliable” is the headline’s characterization of one person’s experience, not evidence that LM Studio or its models outperform ChatGPT and Gemini generally.

LM Studio is the runner; the model shapes the answers

LM Studio is the application Leroux used to find, load, and chat with downloadable models on a Windows 11 PC. Its getting-started documentation describes obtaining model files, loading a model into memory, and then chatting with it. The application provides the interface and local runtime; answer quality depends substantially on the particular model, its version, and the task.

Ideal for gaming, video editing, and multitasking, it provides expansive and crisp multi-display support.

The two models in the account were selected for different workloads rather than treated as interchangeable. Google’s developer documentation describes Gemma integration with LM Studio and says image understanding is available in some Gemma models. That qualification matters: multimodal capability should not be assumed for every Gemma version, and the account does not establish that the exact model remains available in the same form today.

What “local” means for privacy

Once model files are on the computer, LM Studio says local conversations and document chats can work without internet access, and that their content stays on the device. Model discovery and downloads do require a connection. Its privacy policy, effective June 2026, distinguishes local use from optional cloud features: it says local prompts, histories, and documents are not transmitted, while network actions such as searches, downloads, and application updates still make requests. Choosing a cloud feature means the request is processed by that service.

Sensitive workloads can remain on-device, while cloud AI adds larger models and deeper reasoning when needed.

Local use can reduce the need to send prompts to a hosted AI service, but it is not the same as saying the application never connects to the internet. Users who need a strict offline workflow should download the model first, avoid optional cloud features, and consider disconnecting from the network while working. The distinction is between local inference and network-dependent functions, not simply “private” versus “online.”

Can your computer run a local model?

The account’s 32 GB of RAM describes Leroux’s desktop, not a minimum requirement or a guarantee that every model will run well. LM Studio notes that loading a model allocates RAM for its weights and other parameters. The amount required and resulting performance depend on the specific model and configuration; the cited sources do not establish a universal memory threshold.

  • Choose the particular model and version before deciding whether an upgrade is needed.
  • Check the model’s memory needs against your computer’s available RAM and other hardware, rather than using 32 GB as a general rule.
  • Expect memory use to include more than the model’s advertised weight file; LM Studio also identifies other parameters as consuming RAM.
  • If a model does not load or performs poorly, try a smaller model or a configuration suited to your machine before assuming every local model has the same requirements.

How to judge a local model against hosted assistants

A useful comparison starts with the job you need done, not a blanket claim that one tool is best. Local models may be appealing when keeping prompts on-device is important and the computer can handle the chosen model. Hosted assistants may be more convenient when you need online features or do not want to manage model files and local hardware. The available account and documentation do not supply controlled quality scores to settle which gives better answers overall.

Question What the available evidence establishes
Where are local prompts processed? LM Studio says local conversations and document chats stay on the device; optional cloud features process requests through cloud services.
Does local use require an internet connection? Not for local conversations after model files are present, according to LM Studio. Finding and downloading models and receiving updates involve network access.
Which model should handle a task? The account used DeepSeek-R1-0528-Qwen3-8B for coding and homework-like questions, and Gemma 4 12B for broader or image-oriented tasks. This is one user’s choice, not a general performance ranking.
Is there a proven reliability winner? No controlled benchmark or measured accuracy comparison is described in the account.
Are the models open source? LM Studio says models differ in their licenses and degrees of openness. The label alone does not establish the permissions for a particular model.

Check model capabilities and license separately

Before relying on a model for images, coding, or other specialized work, verify the capability for the exact model and version. Google’s LM Studio guide limits its image-understanding statement to some Gemma models; it should not be generalized to the entire family.

What the account is useful for

Leroux’s experience is most useful as a concrete example of matching local models to tasks: a coding- and reasoning-oriented choice for some questions, and a different model for broader or image-oriented work. It also illustrates the trade-off readers should evaluate: local processing and control over model choice require suitable hardware and some setup, while the account provides no basis for declaring local models universally more accurate or dependable than hosted assistants.
