For measuring visibility in AI-powered search, start with first-party data: Google Search Console for Google’s generative AI features and Bing Webmaster Tools for citations in Microsoft Copilot and partner experiences. Add a conventional SEO suite for research and content workflows, and consider specialist AI-visibility monitoring only when its sampling and source data can inform a real decision. No tool can guarantee that a page will appear in an AI answer.

What “LLM optimization” means for SEO

LLM optimization, AI search visibility, AEO and GEO describe efforts to improve or measure a site’s presence in AI search experiences. Google’s guidance treats generative AI optimization as SEO—not as a separate discipline with established magic tactics. It recommends useful, distinctive, people-first content and pages that are crawlable and eligible to appear in Search. Eligibility does not guarantee that Google will crawl, index or serve a page.

That distinction shapes the tool stack: one layer supports the content and technical foundations of SEO; another measures whether platforms report visibility or citations. A score from a third-party product is that vendor’s measurement, not a definitive view into an AI platform.

Build the stack around what you need to know

Tool Best use What it reports or supports Important qualification
Google Search Console Measure Google AI-feature performance Generative AI performance reporting for discovery through Google Search and Discover AI features. The report inherits ordinary Search Console data limits. Google’s help documentation says worldwide rollout was complete as of August 31, 2026.
Bing Webmaster Tools Measure visibility in Microsoft AI answers AI Performance reporting includes pages cited, visibility trends and grounding queries across Microsoft Copilot and partner experiences. Reporting applies to content eligible for indexing. Expanded analysis capabilities announced in 2026 are preview features.
Ahrefs Support conventional SEO research and content work Documented features include AI keyword suggestions, intent grouping, translations, content coverage grading against SERP competitors and AI-assisted audit fixes. Feature access varies by plan and add-on. These workflows are not direct measurements of Google AI-system access or citations.
Specialist AI-visibility monitors Optional prompt or query sampling across selected engines Potentially useful for tracking citations, sources or trends, depending on the vendor. The available evidence does not establish a best vendor or a reliable head-to-head comparison. Check methodology and validate claims against platform guidance.

Start with Google Search Console

Use Search Console’s Generative AI performance report when the question is how your site is being discovered through Google’s AI search features. Google’s help documentation says the report’s worldwide rollout was complete as of August 31, 2026. Its data is subject to the same limits as ordinary Search Console reporting, so it should be treated as a useful platform report rather than a complete record of every interaction.

Before interpreting low or absent visibility, check whether the relevant pages are crawlable, indexable and compliant with Google’s requirements. Meeting eligibility requirements does not ensure crawling, indexing or serving. Google also cautions that third-party tools do not have access to its internal ranking or AI systems and cannot guarantee results. Google’s guide to AI features and your website explains the content and technical foundations.

Add Bing Webmaster Tools for a separate view

Bing Webmaster Tools’ AI Performance report provides a distinct first-party view of how eligible content is cited in AI-generated answers across Microsoft Copilot and partner experiences. It reports cited pages, visibility trends and grounding queries. Use it alongside Google’s reporting rather than treating either platform as a proxy for all AI search.

Bing announced expanded analysis features—Intents, Topics, Citation Share and Compare—in a global preview on June 16, 2026. They are preview capabilities, not a settled or universal reporting standard. The Bing Webmaster Tools AI Performance help page describes the report; the Bing announcement covers the expanded preview.

Use an SEO suite for defined workflows, not platform truth

A conventional SEO suite can help with the work that supports discoverability: finding keyword ideas, grouping search intent, identifying content gaps, reviewing technical issues and improving coverage against search results. Ahrefs documents AI-assisted features for these workflows, including keyword suggestions, intent grouping, translations, content coverage grading against SERP competitors and audit fixes. Access varies by plan and add-on, so confirm the specific feature availability before choosing a subscription.

These capabilities can make research or editing more efficient, but they do not show that a tool has privileged access to Google’s AI systems. Google’s guidance on third-party SEO tools explains that outside products cannot guarantee performance or expose internal ranking systems. Ahrefs’ AI feature documentation describes its documented workflow features; it is not evidence of first-party AI citation measurement.

When a specialist visibility monitor is worth considering

Specialist monitoring may be useful if you need repeated sampling of prompts or queries across particular AI engines and can act on the findings. The available evidence does not establish a universal winner or a reliable vendor comparison, so evaluate a product by its data provenance and method—not by the confidence of its visibility score.

  • Engine coverage: Confirm which products and surfaces are actually sampled, and whether that matches your audience.
  • Sampling method: Ask how prompts or queries are selected, how often they are repeated, and whether results are comparable over time.
  • Evidence shown: Look for cited pages, source reporting, queries and trend history rather than an unexplained composite score.
  • Decision value: Check whether the data can lead to a specific content, technical or measurement action.
  • Limits and cost: Verify plan restrictions, sampling volume and current pricing directly with the vendor. A vendor metric should not be presented as a platform’s own ranking or citation truth.

Choose by role and decision

Site owners

Set up Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools first. They provide the most defensible platform-specific reporting in this stack. Use the reports to identify cited or visible pages and queries, then review whether those pages serve visitors well and meet technical requirements.

SEO practitioners

Pair first-party reporting with a conventional SEO suite if keyword research, intent grouping, competitor coverage or audit workflows are part of your regular work. Keep workflow assistance separate from AI citation measurement when explaining results to colleagues or clients.

Marketing teams

Agree on the question before buying another monitor: which engine matters, what counts as a meaningful citation or visibility change, and what action would follow? If a vendor cannot explain its sampling and source reporting, its score may not support a sound editorial decision.

How to judge claims and avoid false certainty

  • Separate reported platform data from vendor-estimated or sampled results.
  • Record the engine, surface, query or prompt set, date range and reporting limits behind each comparison.
  • Do not treat eligibility as proof of inclusion, or a tool score as a guarantee of ranking, citation or traffic.
  • Use content and technical improvements to serve people and improve crawlability, not to chase unsupported “hacks.”
  • Compare tools on the specific workflow or measurement need they address; the available sources do not support a universal ranking or current comparative prices.

Google’s AI features guidance describes the SEO foundations and cautions against unsupported tactics. Its position is straightforward: useful, distinctive content and sound technical SEO remain the foundation, while platform reports and third-party tools answer different measurement questions.
