An LLM router can lower answer quality if it sends a request to a model that is a poor fit for that task. That does not mean routing inherently damages trust: the available evidence does not establish how often this happens in production or measure a general causal effect on user trust. The practical safeguard is to test routing against a fixed-model baseline on representative requests, measure answer quality alongside cost and latency, and record which model handled each request.

Why can routing change answer quality?

A router selects a model for each request, or in some designs selects multiple models or a sequence of models. The aim is to match the task with a suitable balance of capability, cost and speed: straightforward work may not need the same model as complex or specialized work. But model selection becomes another quality-sensitive decision. If the router chooses poorly, a user can receive a weaker answer even when the underlying models have not changed.

Routing systems do not all make that decision in the same way. Microsoft Learn describes benchmarking a model router before production, while AWS describes analyzing an incoming prompt, predicting response quality among configured models, applying a quality-difference criterion and returning a selected model’s response. These are examples of managed routing approaches, not evidence that every router uses the same process.

How can a router quietly underperform?

The workload does not match its calibration data

A router calibrated on one set of prompts may behave differently on a team’s actual requests. RouteLLM’s documentation warns that calibration data affects routing proportions and recommends calibrating with a sample of incoming queries. If real traffic shifts toward tasks unlike the evaluation set, a previously reasonable threshold may no longer produce the desired model mix.

The selected model is a poor fit for the request

A single-model decision can misroute a request to a model that is less suitable for it. The RACER paper identifies this as a vulnerability of single-model selection and studies a risk-aware alternative that selects a set of models for aggregation. That work explores a design response; it does not establish that multi-model selection is best for every application.

The prompt may not reveal task difficulty

OpenRouter’s benchmark article argues that a router may not have enough information in the prompt alone to judge complexity. It also discusses heuristic errors, cache rebuilding when switching models, and latency from processing the routing decision. These are points made by a vendor in explaining its benchmark rationale, not independent estimates of how often such problems occur.

Using more models can add work

Audition approaches call multiple models and choose a result; cascades try a cheaper model before escalating or continuing. IBM Research notes that auditioning and cascade inference can increase cost and delay because they involve multiple inference calls. Whether the additional work is worthwhile depends on the quality improvement for the particular workload.

Provider and user preferences may differ

An ICLR 2026 theoretical analysis models users who can re-prompt or abandon a task. It describes a possible gap between provider-optimal and user-preferred routing when user utility and provider cost rank models differently. This is a theoretical account of an incentive conflict, not evidence that a particular provider intentionally degrades answers.

What does the trust claim actually mean?

Users may interpret inconsistent or weaker answers as unreliability, so quality problems can plausibly affect confidence in a product. That connection is an inference, however: the cited work does not provide a direct causal estimate of how routing changes user trust in production. It also does not establish a typical rate of silent underperformance or support the claim that providers generally conceal degradation. The defensible concern is narrower: routing adds a decision point whose quality needs to be measured.

How should you benchmark an adaptive router?

  1. Build a representative evaluation set. Include the real task categories your product handles, difficult cases, and requests where models have distinct strengths. Use privacy-safe, policy-compliant examples. RouteLLM warns that a calibration set may not reflect incoming requests, so draw examples from the workload you intend to serve.
  2. Compare with a fixed-model baseline. Run the same prompts through the current model and the router, using the same evaluation method. Microsoft Learn’s guidance is direct: “Before you send production traffic to model router, benchmark it against your current model for response quality, estimated cost, and latency.”
  3. Measure quality, cost and latency together. A cost reduction by itself does not show that routing is successful. Evaluate answer quality for the task, the estimated cost, and end-to-end latency; report the trade-offs rather than collapsing them into a single score unless the weighting reflects your product’s priorities.
  4. Log the route and decision context. Store the selected model and enough routing metadata to investigate unexpected choices. AWS documentation says its response includes information about the model used and routing criteria. Logging makes it possible to connect a weak output to the decision that produced it.
  5. Set the eligible models and fallback deliberately. If selections are surprising, Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance recommends reviewing routing mode and constraining the model subset. AWS recommends choosing a fallback model as a reliable baseline and configuring the quality-difference criterion. Test these choices rather than relying on defaults.
  6. Re-run evaluations after material changes. Repeat the representative test when models, prompts, traffic mix or routing logic change. AWS recommends regular performance review as new models become available.

Which routing design should you evaluate?

There is no design established as best for every workload. Compare candidates on task-specific quality, total inference cost, end-to-end latency, calibration-data needs, fallback behavior, visibility into the chosen model and sensitivity to changes in request distribution.

Design family How it works What to examine
Predictive selection Chooses a model based on a prediction about the request. AWS describes analyzing a prompt, predicting response quality across configured models and applying a quality-difference criterion. Whether the prediction and calibration fit your incoming requests; the selected model and criteria should be inspectable.
Simultaneous audition Calls multiple models and selects a response. IBM Research distinguishes this from predictive selection. Whether any quality benefit justifies the added inference calls, cost and delay.
Cascade Tries a cheaper model first, then uses further inference as needed. IBM Research describes cascades as a distinct routing approach. Escalation behavior, total calls, latency and whether difficult requests reach an appropriate model.
Risk-aware model-set selection Selects a set of models for aggregation rather than relying on a single model choice. RACER studies this approach. Task quality and the total cost and latency of using multiple models; results must be checked on the target workload.

How should you read published router results?

Research improvements are not production guarantees

Microsoft Research reported that its cross-attention routing method improved Average Improvement in Quality by up to 6.6% and maximum performance by 2.9% over existing routers in its 2025 RouterBench evaluation. These are the authors’ results in that evaluation, not a promised gain for a deployed router or a substitute for testing on your own prompts.

Composite scores encode someone’s priorities

OpenRouter’s Router Index describes a default blend of benchmark quality at 60%, time per task at 20% and cost at 20%; the weights are adjustable, and the inspected page does not state a publication date. Those weights define that index’s scoring method, not a universal standard or the right utility function for every product.

Historical savings may not transfer

IBM Research describes a historical RouterBench test in which a routed library of 11 LLMs outperformed the individual models, slightly exceeded GPT-4 and saved 5 cents per query. That is a specific historical test; the cited description does not provide enough context to treat the figure as a current expected saving for another deployment.

What operating principle should guide the decision?

Kate Soule, generative AI program director at IBM Research, summarized the trade-off this way: “Routing gives you the ability to finesse price and performance.” She also advised: “Save the big models for the high value, complicated tasks, and use the smaller cheaper models for easy tasks that don’t require hundreds of billions of parameters.” Treat that as a design principle to validate against the tasks users actually perform, not as a rule that smaller models are always sufficient for easy-looking prompts.
