You can reduce LLM document-extraction costs without sacrificing quality, but an 85% saving is not guaranteed. Avneet Bansal reported per-document savings of 85–93% with “negligible accuracy impact” in a DEV Community article published October 7, 2026; the available account does not include a reproducible benchmark or independent validation. Treat that result as a hypothesis to test on your own documents, not a forecast.

Start by measuring cost and quality on your own workload

Before changing models or prompts, establish what a trusted extraction currently costs and how well it performs. Run a representative sample of your document types through the existing pipeline, then preserve the outputs and measurements as a comparison baseline.

  • Quality: Compare extracted values with ground truth or outputs validated by a person. Record results by field and document type, and distinguish harmless formatting differences from errors with real downstream impact.
  • Usage and reliability: Record input and output tokens, retries, failures, latency, and any human review or fallback work.
  • Total cost: Include inference, validation, retries, and infrastructure—not just the model’s quoted per-token price.

Use a held-out evaluation set when tuning the pipeline, and keep checking results after deployment. A cheaper setup is worthwhile only if its total cost per accepted document improves while quality remains above the floor your application requires.

Remove work that cannot produce a useful field

If a field cannot occur in a particular document type, do not ask a model to extract it. Classify the document first, then send only the applicable fields to the extraction step. For example, a pipeline could skip purchase-order fields when processing a contract, provided classification is reliable and the downstream system does not expect those fields.

Bansal estimates that adaptive field selection can cut calls by 30–40% in an example pattern. That is an author-reported estimate, not a universal reduction. Measure how often fields are genuinely inapplicable in your corpus, and include classification errors in the evaluation: a mistaken document type can suppress a field that should have been extracted.

Choose a model tier separately for each field

Fields differ in difficulty and consequence. A straightforward identifier may be extractable by a lower-cost model, while a nuanced clause or ambiguous total may need a more capable model or human review. Test candidate models against the baseline field by field rather than downgrading the entire workflow at once.

  • READY WHENEVER YOU ARE – The DS-640 mobile scanner is powered via an included micro USB 3. 0 cable allowing you to use it even where there is no outlet available. Plug it into you PC or laptop and you are ready to scan.
  • WORKS YOUR WAY – Use the Brother free iPrint&Scan desktop app for scanning to multiple “Scan-to” destinations like PC, Network, cloud services, Email and OCR. (2) Supports Windows, Mac and Linux and TWAIN/WIA for PC/ICA for Mac/SANE drivers. (3)
  • OPTIMIZE IMAGES AND TEXT – Automatic color detection/adjustment, image rotation (PC only), bleed through prevention/background removal, text enhancement, color drop to enhance scans. Software suite includes document management and OCR software. (4)
  1. Choose a representative evaluation set and retain the baseline output for each field.
  2. Run a less expensive candidate model on the same inputs and compare its results against ground truth or validated outputs.
  3. Assess both error rate and error severity. A small miss rate can still be unacceptable for a high-impact field.
  4. Keep fields that fail your quality target on the stronger model, or define a fallback for uncertain results.
  5. Measure fallback and review rates, latency, and total cost per accepted document after routing is enabled.

Confidence scores can help trigger escalation, but they are not proof that an answer is correct. Calibrate any confidence-based rule on your own evaluation data and monitor its misses by field and document type.

Reuse prior results only when the inputs still match

Caching can avoid repeating extraction when the same document content and extraction configuration recur. A narrowly defined cache key can include a hash of the relevant document section, the field, the prompt version, and the model version. Reuse a result only when those inputs match; otherwise, stale outputs can survive a changed document or extraction rule.

  • SIMPLE FILE MANAGEMENT — Scanner allows the creation of searchable PDFs with Optical Character Recognition (OCR) and convert scans to editable Word or Excel files effortlessly; Designed for home and office document scanning

In an illustrative reprocessing scenario, Bansal describes extracting four fields from 200 documents after a prompt change: 800 extractions without reuse versus 7,000 without the proposed reuse, characterized as an 88% reduction. This is an example calculation in the article, not an independently validated benchmark. The benefit depends on how often documents are reprocessed and whether prior results remain valid under the new prompt and model.

Consider distillation when a repeatable task justifies it

Model distillation trains a smaller student model to perform a specific task using outputs from a larger teacher. AWS describes the process as transferring knowledge from a “larger more intelligent model” to a “smaller, faster, cost-efficient model.” A managed workflow is available through Amazon Bedrock, but supported model combinations and regions are limited and can change.

Canon Canoscan Lide 300 Scanner (PDF, AUTOSCAN, Copy, Send)
  • Scanner type: Document
  • Connectivity technology: USB
  • With Auto Scan Mode, the scanner automatically detects what you're scanning

Before choosing this route, check the current Amazon Bedrock model distillation documentation and its prerequisites and supported combinations. AWS documentation says teacher inference charges may apply during data synthesis. Include those charges, student inference, training, model storage, and evaluation in the cost comparison; a lower student inference price alone does not establish a lower total cost.

AWS’s dataset preparation guidance says the documented input supports up to 15,000 prompt-response pairs and recommends at least 100 for the documented input modes. These are service limits and recommendations, not a promise of savings or a guarantee that a student will meet your quality target. Confirm current requirements before preparing a dataset.

Reduce idle infrastructure only when the trade-off pays off

For bursty, low-volume workloads, event-driven or scale-to-zero deployment may reduce the cost of keeping resources available between jobs. Compare the actual idle infrastructure cost with the added operational complexity, startup delays, and latency requirements. This is an architecture option to evaluate—not a measured saving established by the cited sources.

Evaluate the whole pipeline, not one price line

Compare each proposed change using the same workload and quality criteria. The useful question is not simply which model has the lowest token price, but what it costs to produce an accepted document at the required quality.

Measure What to check
Total cost per accepted document Inference, teacher calls, training and storage where applicable, retries, validation, review, and infrastructure.
Field-level quality Accuracy by field and document type, with greater scrutiny for high-impact errors.
Fallback and review How often uncertain or low-quality results need a stronger model or a person.
Latency and throughput Whether routing, cold starts, or additional validation meet service requirements.
Reprocessing pattern How frequently identical inputs and configurations recur, and how often cached results must be invalidated.
Operational and data constraints Maintenance effort, model and region availability, and privacy requirements for documents and training data.

Set a quality floor and watch for regressions

Keep a held-out set for evaluation and monitor production results by field and document type. Bansal recommends weekly shadow sampling and proposes agreement thresholds of 98%, 95%, and 90%; these are the author’s suggested checks, not established requirements. Set thresholds based on the consequences of errors in your workflow, and define what happens when a field falls below its target—such as routing it to a stronger model, human review, or the previous configuration.
