Prompt caching, batch processing, and model routing reduce LLM spending in different ways. Caching cuts repeated processing when an eligible prompt prefix recurs; batching trades immediate responses for discounted asynchronous execution; routing sends each task to the least costly model that still meets its quality requirement. They are workload controls, not interchangeable discounts.

Choose among them by measuring cost per successful task together with latency, reliability, and output quality. Provider pricing, cache eligibility, retention, regional rules, and model support change frequently, so verify the exact terms for your model and region in current official documentation.

Prompt caching, batching, and routing at a glance

Approach Best fit Main cost mechanism Constraint to plan for
Prompt caching Repeated, stable, sufficiently large context Lower processing price for eligible cache reads, with provider-specific write charges and hit requirements Prefix changes, expiry, minimum lengths, and eligibility rules can reduce reuse
Batching Independent jobs that can finish later, such as evaluations or dataset processing Discounted asynchronous API pricing Turnaround is delayed; streaming may be unavailable
Model routing Mixed task difficulty, risk, or quality requirements Use a smaller or less expensive model when it passes the task’s quality bar Requires evaluation, monitoring, fallbacks, and quality controls

The three controls can be used together, but none guarantees a universal percentage saving. A cache hit does not make a changing prompt cheap, a batch discount does not help an interactive request, and a lower per-token model price can increase total cost if it causes retries or human review.

What you are actually optimizing

An LLM bill usually reflects input tokens, output tokens, cache writes and reads where offered, and the number of attempts. The operational bill also includes failed requests, retries, moderation or validation calls, storage for intermediate data, and engineering work needed to operate a policy. A useful metric is:

Cost per successful task = total API and operating cost ÷ tasks that meet the acceptance criteria.

Record the task’s latency and quality score beside that metric. “Successful” should mean the result passes your factuality, format, safety, and business checks, not merely that the API returned HTTP 200. This prevents a cheap model, an aggressive cache policy, or a large batch from looking better because it produced more unusable output.

Why list prices are not enough

  • Input and output prices can differ substantially, and output length may grow when a cheaper model needs more explanation or retries.
  • Cache writes, cache reads, retention windows, and minimum cacheable lengths vary by provider and model.
  • Retries after timeouts or validation failures consume additional tokens.
  • Latency has a business cost: a delayed answer may cause abandonment, duplicate requests, or a missed service-level objective.
  • Regional or data-residency choices can add a pricing modifier or restrict an otherwise eligible feature.

Prompt caching: reuse stable context

Prompt caching reuses model-processing state for a matching prompt prefix. OpenAI describes that state as key-value tensors rather than a stored copy of tokens. The model still processes the new material required to answer each request. Caching therefore helps only when the same eligible prefix appears again; it does not eliminate computation for the changing user question or new documents.

When caching is a strong fit

  • An agent repeatedly sends the same system instructions, tools, policies, or long reference set.
  • Many requests share a large product catalog, codebase, or evaluation rubric while only the final question changes.
  • Conversation turns reuse a stable preamble and the provider’s model supports that prefix length.

How to structure a cache-friendly request

  1. Put stable instructions, tool definitions, policy text, and shared reference material at the beginning of the prompt.
  2. Append changing user content, timestamps, request identifiers, and per-task documents after that stable section.
  3. Keep formatting and whitespace deterministic where the provider’s matching rules make exact prefixes important.
  4. Confirm the model’s minimum cacheable length, read and write rates, retention behavior, and supported request types.
  5. Instrument cache hits, misses, read tokens, write tokens, and expiry events so savings can be calculated from production traffic.

What causes cache savings to disappear

A changed prefix can invalidate reuse. Inserting a timestamp or request ID near the beginning shifts every later token and may turn otherwise identical requests into misses. A context that is too short for the model’s minimum length is not eligible. Expiry, model changes, altered tool schemas, and provider-specific eligibility rules can also reduce hit rates. Session reuse alone is not a guarantee of a hit.

Anthropic’s cost guidance similarly recommends caching repeated context in agent loops and makes the economics depend on cache reads and writes. Do not transfer one provider’s cache discount or retention assumption to another provider. Test hit rates with the exact model, request shape, and traffic pattern you intend to run.

How to evaluate caching

Compare a representative period with caching enabled against an otherwise equivalent period without it. Hold model, prompt content, output limits, and retry policy constant. Report the share of eligible requests that hit, the tokens written, the tokens read, misses caused by changed prefixes, and cost per successful task. A high hit rate can still be uneconomic if the stable prefix is small, write charges are high, or the workload produces little repeat traffic.

Batching: discount in exchange for time

Batch APIs accept independent requests for asynchronous processing. They are suited to work that can wait, including offline evaluation, document or dataset processing, embedding or classification queues, and large backfills. They are a poor fit for an interactive chat response or any workflow that must stream partial output immediately.

Published provider terms

Provider documentation Stated batch term Operational qualification
OpenAI 50% discount versus synchronous APIs A 24-hour processing window is specified; streaming is unsupported
Google Gemini API 50% of standard cost A target turnaround of 24 hours is documented
Anthropic 50% discount on input and output tokens Exact eligibility and regional terms remain model- and service-specific

These are provider pricing terms, not an independent benchmark and not a promise that every model, region, or request type qualifies. Confirm the current terms before committing a forecast. The 24-hour language describes a service window or target, not a guarantee that every batch completes at the same time.

Designing a reliable batch pipeline

  1. Separate deferrable jobs from requests with user-facing latency requirements.
  2. Make each item independent and attach a stable task ID so results can be matched, retried, or audited.
  3. Define validation rules before submission: schema checks, required fields, safety checks, and acceptable confidence or accuracy.
  4. Submit a bounded batch and record its model, region, prompt version, submission time, and expected completion window.
  5. Poll or receive completion events according to the provider’s interface, then validate every result rather than assuming batch completion means task success.
  6. Retry only failed or invalid items when the service permits it; resubmitting an entire batch can erase the discount.

Batching pitfalls

  • Queue delay can violate a product promise even when token cost falls.
  • Unsupported streaming means consumers receive no incremental output.
  • Large batches can amplify a prompt bug across thousands of requests; canary with a small sample first.
  • Retries, duplicate submissions, and post-processing calls belong in the total cost calculation.

Model routing: match price to task difficulty

Model routing is a policy, not a single API feature. A router classifies each request and selects a model based on expected difficulty, risk, latency, and required quality. The cost lever is straightforward: use a smaller or less expensive model when it maintains the required accuracy. OpenAI’s cost guidance explicitly recommends smaller models where accuracy can be maintained.

A practical routing policy

  1. Define task classes, such as extraction, classification, summarization, coding, retrieval-grounded answers, and high-risk decisions.
  2. Set a measurable quality bar for each class: exact-match accuracy, structured-output validity, groundedness, refusal behavior, or human acceptance.
  3. Build a representative evaluation set that includes easy, typical, ambiguous, and adversarial examples.
  4. Test candidate models on that set and record quality, latency, failure rate, and token use.
  5. Route routine requests to the cheapest model that clears the bar; send uncertain or high-impact cases to a stronger model.
  6. Define fallbacks for timeouts, rate limits, malformed output, and low confidence. Count fallback calls in cost per successful task.
  7. Monitor drift. A prompt, model version, tool schema, or input distribution change can invalidate an earlier routing decision.

Signals a router can use

Useful signals include task type, input length, language, presence of code or tables, requested output format, estimated ambiguity, customer tier, and the consequence of an error. Confidence scores can trigger escalation, but they should be calibrated against held-out examples rather than accepted blindly. A deterministic rule is often easier to audit than an opaque classifier for regulated or high-impact workflows.

Anthropic discusses multi-model approaches, but there is no universal router, threshold, or routing-savings number established across providers. Treat routing as an engineering system that needs evaluation and fallback rules, not as an automatic discount switch.

How to compare the three approaches on one workload

Use the same task sample and acceptance tests for every option. A useful experiment has four arms: baseline synchronous calls, caching where the prefix is eligible, batching for deferrable items, and routing across at least two models. Keep prompt versions and output limits fixed, and run enough traffic to observe cache expiry, retries, and difficult examples.

Metrics to collect

  • Effective cost: input, output, cache read and write charges, batch charges, retries, and post-processing.
  • Successful-task rate: the proportion that passes automated and human acceptance checks.
  • Latency: median and tail latency for interactive calls; queue-to-completion time for batches.
  • Quality: accuracy, groundedness, schema validity, safety outcomes, and escalation rate.
  • Reliability: timeout, rate-limit, invalid-output, and fallback frequencies.
  • Utilization: cache-hit rate, batch fill rate, and traffic share routed to each model.

Interpret the results

Choose caching when repeated eligible context produces a meaningful hit rate without making prompts brittle. Choose batching when the 24-hour-style asynchronous window fits the product and the provider’s discount outweighs operational delay. Choose routing when task difficulty varies and a cheaper model consistently clears the quality bar for a useful share of traffic. If all three are viable, apply them at different layers: route a task to a model, cache its stable context, and batch only the requests that can wait.

Do not assume headline discounts stack linearly. A batch request may have different cache behavior, and a routed request may change the model for which a cache was warmed. Measure the combined configuration rather than adding percentages from separate pricing pages.

Decision guide

Choose prompt caching first when

  • Most requests share a long, stable prefix.
  • Those requests require near-real-time responses.
  • You can place variable content after the stable context and observe hit rates.

Choose batching first when

  • Jobs are independent and users do not need immediate output.
  • A delayed completion window is acceptable contractually and operationally.
  • You can validate, retry, and reconcile results asynchronously.

Choose routing first when

  • Requests vary widely in complexity or business risk.
  • You have a representative evaluation set and a measurable quality bar.
  • You can escalate uncertain cases and monitor model-specific failure rates.

Use a baseline instead when

If traffic is too small for repeated prefixes, too urgent for asynchronous processing, or too uniform to justify multiple models, a simple single-model synchronous design may be easier to operate. Establish its cost per successful task first; optimization is useful only when it improves the metric that matters without breaking the user experience.

Common failure modes and fixes

Symptom Likely cause Fix
Cache hit rate is low Variable text, timestamps, or tool definitions appear early in the prompt Move stable instructions and shared context earlier; keep changing fields later; verify minimum length and matching rules
Batch cost is lower but users complain Interactive work was placed in an asynchronous queue Reserve batching for deferrable jobs and keep a synchronous path for urgent requests
Routing lowers token price but raises total spend Cheap-model outputs fail validation or require retries and escalation Track successful-task cost and tighten quality gates before expanding the cheap route
Expected discount is missing Model, region, endpoint, or request type is not eligible under current terms Check the provider’s current pricing and eligibility documentation for the exact deployment
Optimization results regress after a release Prompt, model version, traffic mix, or retention behavior changed Version prompts and routing rules; rerun the evaluation set; monitor cache, quality, and latency dashboards
