There is no universal winner. OpenDocRouter is aimed at teams that want one API for selecting and switching among document-parsing models. LlamaParse is LlamaIndex’s managed parser for broad file support and production controls. Unstructured’s Workflow Endpoint covers a wider preprocessing path, including partitioning, chunking, embeddings, enrichment, and movement to downstream systems. Choose by workflow boundary, then validate the choice on your own scanned PDFs, tables, forms, and other representative files: no independent same-corpus benchmark establishes a quality winner.

The short answer

Shortlist OpenDocRouter when model choice is central to your architecture. Its unified API is designed to let clients try listed open-source and frontier models while the service manages shared recipes and API behavior. Shortlist LlamaParse when you want LlamaIndex’s managed parsing service, layout-aware OCR, broad documented file support, and controls such as caching, webhooks, and page-level options. Shortlist Unstructured Workflow Endpoint when parsing is only one stage in a larger ingestion pipeline that also partitions, chunks, embeds, enriches, and delivers results to storage, databases, or vector stores.

Those are different product boundaries, not three interchangeable accuracy tiers. Vendor documentation describes capabilities, but the available material does not establish an independent, same-file comparison of extraction accuracy, latency, reliability, security, or total cost. A proof of concept using your own corpus is therefore part of the selection process, not an optional final check.

What each API actually does

OpenDocRouter: a model-switching parsing layer

LlamaIndex announced OpenDocRouter on October 7, 2026 as a platform for document-to-Markdown parsing through a unified API. In the announcement’s wording, Logan Markewich described it as “OpenDocRouter is a platform for document → markdown parsing using the latest open-source and frontier models.” That is a vendor product description, not an independent quality assessment.

The launch announcement says a client can select among the listed models while OpenDocRouter handles versioned recipes and common API access. The explicit input list in that announcement is PDF, PNG, JPEG, and URLs to those formats. It supports synchronous and asynchronous responses. Synchronous responses are documented up to 50 pages, while a request may contain at most 500 pages or 50 MB. Those are launch-era specifications and should be checked against the current service before implementation.

The documented output is Markdown, with optional layout grounding and common layout classes. That makes OpenDocRouter a focused parsing layer: you choose a model and receive normalized document content, then build chunking, embeddings, retrieval, and application logic around it unless your selected workflow supplies those stages separately.

LlamaParse: LlamaIndex’s managed parser

LlamaParse is LlamaIndex’s managed document parsing product, distinct from the broader LlamaIndex framework used to build agents and retrieval-augmented applications. Its developer documentation describes layout-aware OCR and outputs in Markdown, text, or JSON. The same documentation says the service supports more than 130 file types, a vendor-stated count whose exact coverage should be verified for the formats in your corpus.

Operational features documented for LlamaParse include caching, webhooks, page-level controls, and versioned tiers for production use. These controls matter when parsing is a service inside a durable ingestion system: caching can avoid repeat work, webhooks can notify an orchestrator when asynchronous processing finishes, and page-level settings can let you tune handling for particular document regions. The documentation describes those features; it does not provide an independent accuracy or uptime measurement.

Unstructured Workflow Endpoint: preprocessing plus data movement

Unstructured’s Workflow Endpoint is documented as an end-to-end preprocessing workflow. Its stages can include partitioning a source document, chunking the resulting elements, generating embeddings, enriching content, and sending results to destinations such as storage systems, databases, and vector stores. The overview also describes batch processing and remote data sources, along with REST calls and a Python SDK.

This broader boundary can reduce the amount of glue code in an ingestion pipeline, but it also means you are evaluating more than text extraction. Connector behavior, destination configuration, embedding choices, enrichment latency, and failure handling become part of the operational decision. Confirm the current endpoint, account-specific URL, SDK compatibility, and terms before writing production code; those details are not fixed by the high-level overview.

LiteParse and the LlamaIndex framework are separate choices

LlamaIndex distinguishes hosted LlamaParse from LiteParse, a local parser, and from the LlamaIndex application framework. LiteParse may be relevant when data must be processed locally or offline, but it is not the hosted API being compared here. Treating all three as the same product can lead to an incorrect assumption about network access, deployment, billing, or supported controls.

The table describes documented product positioning. It does not rank relative extraction quality, reliability, security, or value.

How the workflow boundaries affect your architecture

If parsing is a replaceable component

OpenDocRouter’s model-selection approach is most useful when you expect to evaluate several parsers or change models as documents evolve. A stable API boundary can keep the rest of your application—storage, chunking, indexing, and retrieval—from changing every time you test a different parser. The trade-off is that you must still design and operate those downstream stages, and you must verify that Markdown plus any layout metadata preserves what your application needs.

If parsing quality and controls are the main service requirement

LlamaParse is the narrower managed-parser proposition. Its documented output choices let an application consume Markdown, plain text, or JSON, while layout-aware OCR targets documents where visual structure affects meaning. Caching and webhooks can fit an asynchronous ingestion service, and page-level controls can be useful when only selected pages need special treatment. The “more than 130 file types” figure is broad but vendor-stated; test the exact office, image, archive, and specialist formats you actually receive.

If ingestion includes retrieval preparation

Unstructured’s Workflow Endpoint is designed for teams that do not want to stop at extracted text. Partitioning preserves document elements, chunking prepares retrieval units, embeddings make those units searchable by vector similarity, and enrichment can add downstream metadata. Remote sources and destinations can connect the workflow to existing repositories and indexes. This can reduce integration work, but it may also introduce more configuration, cost, and failure points than a parser-only API.

File support, scanned pages, and complex layouts

Readers often ask whether an API handles scanned PDFs and tables. The documented evidence answers that question unevenly:

  • OpenDocRouter’s launch announcement explicitly names PDF, PNG, JPEG, and URLs to those formats. It does not, in the material available here, provide a complete matrix for office files, archives, email, or specialist formats.
  • LlamaParse documentation claims support for more than 130 file types and describes layout-aware OCR. That supports a broad shortlist, but a format count does not guarantee identical handling for every version, encoding, scan quality, table style, or embedded object.
  • Unstructured’s overview describes file and remote-data workflows, but it does not establish a complete current format matrix. Confirm each connector and file type in the account documentation.

For scanned pages, evaluate OCR character accuracy on names, numbers, footnotes, and low-contrast text. For tables, check whether rows, columns, merged cells, and units survive in the output format your application consumes. For multi-column pages, verify reading order rather than looking only at whether every word appears somewhere. Forms, charts, and captions deserve separate checks because a parser can return all visible text while still losing the relationships that make the document useful.

OpenDocRouter launch limits and pricing terms

LlamaIndex’s October 7, 2026 announcement describes token-based billing for OpenDocRouter. The launch terms state that new accounts receive $5 in credits, paid top-ups start at $10 plus a 5% processing fee, enabling layout adds $0.20 per million tokens, and failed pages are not charged. The announcement also includes model-specific input, cached-input, and output rates and a ParseBench cost-per-1,000-pages column, but those figures depend on the selected model and should not be generalized into one price.

OpenDocRouter launch term Published value and qualification
New-account credit $5, according to the October 7, 2026 launch announcement
Minimum paid top-up $10, plus a 5% processing fee, according to the same announcement
Layout surcharge $0.20 per million tokens when layout is enabled, according to the launch terms
Failed pages Not charged under the stated launch terms
Synchronous response size Up to 50 pages
Maximum request 500 pages or 50 MB

These prices, credits, model rates, limits, and model availability are time-sensitive. Recheck the live terms before budgeting or publishing an integration. The available material does not provide a like-for-like current price comparison for LlamaParse and Unstructured. A fair cost calculation would hold constant the same documents, parser settings, layout options, retries, chunking, enrichment, embedding work, storage, and usage volume. Calling one product cheaper without those controls would be misleading.

Which API fits common workflows?

Choose OpenDocRouter when model portability is the priority

  • Your team wants to compare several listed parser models behind one API.
  • You expect model versions or providers to change and want to reduce integration rewrites.
  • Markdown is a suitable interchange format and you are prepared to own downstream chunking and indexing.
  • Your jobs fit the documented 500-page or 50 MB request ceiling, or you can split them and manage asynchronous work.

Choose LlamaParse when you want a managed parser with broad format coverage

  • Your corpus spans many file types and the documented 130-plus format claim matches your actual intake.
  • You need Markdown, text, or JSON rather than a single fixed output.
  • You benefit from caching, webhooks, page-level controls, and versioned production tiers.
  • You prefer to keep parsing within the LlamaIndex service family while leaving embeddings and retrieval design to your application.

Choose Unstructured Workflow Endpoint when preprocessing is the product

  • Your ingestion design includes partitioning, chunking, embeddings, and enrichment rather than extraction alone.
  • Documents already live in remote repositories and results need to reach storage, databases, or vector stores.
  • Batch jobs and a Python SDK or REST integration fit your operating model.
  • You want a hosted workflow and accept that connector, destination, embedding, and enrichment settings become part of the evaluation.

Consider a local parser for offline requirements

If policy or network constraints require local processing, evaluate LiteParse separately. It is adjacent to this comparison, not an alternative hosted plan with the same API, limits, or terms.

A fair test plan for your own documents

Do not benchmark only clean, single-column text PDFs. Build a corpus that reflects the failures your application can least tolerate, then run the same files and downstream requirements through each shortlisted workflow.

  1. Assemble representative files. Include born-digital PDFs, scanned pages, multi-column reports, forms, tables, charts, footnotes, photographs, and the non-PDF formats that dominate your repository. Record page counts, file sizes, language, scan resolution, and whether a human considers the source authoritative.
  2. Define acceptance checks before parsing. Create expected answers for names, identifiers, totals, dates, headings, table cells, and footnotes. Decide which errors are tolerable and which would make a document unusable.
  3. Measure OCR and text correctness. Compare characters, words, numbers, symbols, and reading order. Check low-contrast scans and pages with handwriting or stamps if those occur in production.
  4. Inspect structure. Verify heading hierarchy, lists, section boundaries, captions, headers, footers, and the relationship between labels and values. A text-only match can hide a structural failure.
  5. Test tables and charts in the target format. Determine whether your application needs Markdown tables, JSON objects, cell coordinates, chart descriptions, or only searchable text. Score each parser against that actual requirement.
  6. Evaluate metadata and outputs. Check page numbers, element types, source identifiers, confidence information, layout grounding, and any fields your retrieval or audit layer expects. Do not assume that two Markdown files carry equivalent metadata.
  7. Run the complete downstream path. Apply your real chunking, embedding, enrichment, indexing, and retrieval steps. Compare whether chunks preserve context and whether answers cite the correct page or section.
  8. Record operations and cost. Measure queue time, processing latency, synchronous versus asynchronous behavior, retries, partial-page outcomes, webhook delivery, and total spend for the same files and settings. Include any destination or embedding charges in a workflow comparison.
  9. Review governance requirements. Confirm data handling, retention, geographic processing, access controls, deployment choices, and account terms directly with the service for your organization. The product descriptions above do not settle those contractual details.

Use a weighted score only after collecting these observations. For example, a regulated archive may weight page-level traceability and data handling above raw speed, while a large search index may weight throughput and predictable batch cost. Publish the weights with the result so another team can understand why your winner is not automatically theirs.

Implementation and migration pitfalls

Assuming a launch specification is permanent

OpenDocRouter’s 50-page synchronous limit, 500-page or 50 MB request maximum, launch credits, surcharge, and model rates are dated terms. Build configuration and monitoring so limits can be changed without a rewrite, and check the current documentation before relying on them.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Copying legacy Unstructured examples into production

Unstructured’s chunking documentation describes basic, by-title, by-page, and by-similarity methods, but the page explicitly warns that the material concerns the legacy Partition Endpoint. It recommends on-demand jobs for production usage and newer capabilities. Treat those examples as conceptual until you confirm the replacement workflow, current endpoint, authentication, and SDK versions.

Using synchronous calls for long jobs

Long documents and batch ingestion should be designed around asynchronous processing where available. Persist a job identifier, make retries idempotent, capture partial failures, and verify the final page count before publishing an index. Do not assume that a successful HTTP response means every page was parsed correctly.

Comparing parser output without comparing downstream behavior

A visually impressive Markdown file may produce poor retrieval chunks, while a more structured output may require additional transformation but answer user questions better. Compare the complete path from source file to retrieved context, not just the first response body.

What the evidence can and cannot establish

The documented distinctions are clear: OpenDocRouter emphasizes model choice through one API; LlamaParse emphasizes managed parsing and broad documented file support; Unstructured emphasizes a wider preprocessing workflow. The evidence is not sufficient to claim that any one of them is more accurate on every document class, more secure, faster, or less expensive. No independent common-corpus accuracy figure was established, and no hands-on test is represented here.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That uncertainty is actionable. Select two or three candidates, run the test plan on the files that matter to your users, and keep the raw outputs, settings, timing, and cost records. The API that fits your workflow is the one that meets your acceptance criteria with an operational model your team can support—not the one with the broadest marketing claim.
