Llama for Windows is a free, open-source Windows 11 tray application built around llama.cpp. It downloads recommended open models, runs inference on your own PC, provides a browser chat interface, and exposes a local OpenAI-compatible API. The advertised installer is a 1 MB download and the installed app is 4 MB; model files require additional disk space.
What Llama for Windows does
The project describes Llama as “a Windows 11 tray app for running llama.cpp models locally.” After installation, it sits in the Windows toolbar and manages a local llama serve process. You can use the included chat experience or connect another OpenAI-compatible application to the local server.
Because inference runs on the computer, the app is intended for offline use after model files are available. The product description labels it free, open source and able to work offline. Model quality, response speed and supported features still depend on the selected model and your hardware.

- Install the Windows desktop application using the one-click installer recommended by the official installation flow.
- After setup, open the app from the Windows toolbar or system tray.
- Continue to the quickstart and choose a recommended model from the model browser.
- Download the model from the Hugging Face Hub, then start it. The app can use an existing
llama.exeor download the required executable for you. - Open the local chat window and send a prompt. An
Alt+Spaceoverlay can open chat from another Windows application.
The application chooses model settings based on the computer it detects. Advanced llama.cpp settings remain available in a plain-text configuration file if you need to tune the guided defaults.

Where models are stored and reused
Downloaded files are kept in the standard Hugging Face cache at %USERPROFILE%.cachehuggingfacehub. This means other Hugging Face-compatible tools can find the same files instead of downloading duplicate copies. The product documentation says each model is stored once and shared with llama.cpp and other tools.
Plan storage around the models you intend to use, not the small application installer. Quantized models can vary substantially in size, and Windows may need additional temporary space while downloading or loading one.

Local chat
Llama includes a ChatGPT-like interface that communicates with the model running on your PC. The tray design keeps the service available without requiring a separate terminal window, while the Alt+Space shortcut provides a quick overlay from any application.

OpenAI-compatible endpoint
When a model is running, configure compatible software to use http://localhost:9931/v1 as its API base URL. The local endpoint does not require an API key or usage subscription. The product page lists streaming, tool calling, structured output and vision among its supported capabilities, although the actual result also depends on whether the chosen model supports each capability.
In a client that asks for a base URL, enter the endpoint above and supply the model identifier exposed by the running server. Keep the address bound to localhost unless you deliberately understand the security consequences of making a local service reachable from another device.
Privacy: what stays local and what connects out
The Windows project README states: “Llama sends no telemetry — no events, no analytics, no install id.” It also says prompts and inference stay 100% local. These are statements from the project documentation, not an independent privacy audit.

- Checking for application release updates.
- Calls between the tray app and the local llama server.
After a model is downloaded, you can use it without sending prompts to a hosted AI provider. Initial downloads and update checks still require network access unless you manage those files and checks yourself.
Hardware and model requirements
Windows 11 is the target platform for this tray application. The executable and model must both fit the capabilities of your PC. Microsoft’s Windows local-AI guidance cautions that performance varies with available hardware and that not every model is available on every device.

No official source cited here provides a universal tokens-per-second or latency figure. Treat speed as a hardware- and model-dependent result rather than a fixed product specification.

The choice is mainly about workflow, not a guaranteed quality or speed ranking. None of the cited material supplies an independent benchmark that would justify declaring one option universally faster.

The model will not download
Check that Windows has network access and that the Hugging Face download can complete. Verify free disk space beyond the model’s displayed size, because downloads may need temporary room. If the download was interrupted, retry from the model browser rather than deleting the shared cache immediately.

The model downloads but will not start
Try a smaller recommended model and close memory-heavy applications. A model can be present on disk yet exceed available system or graphics memory. Restarting the tray app also restarts its managed server process.
An API client cannot connect
Start a model first, then set the client’s base URL exactly to http://localhost:9931/v1. Do not add a cloud provider hostname or assume an API key is required. If another local service already occupies the port, stop that service or follow the app’s configuration guidance for changing the server port.
Responses are slow
Use a smaller or more heavily quantized model, close competing workloads and allow the app to select its hardware settings. There is no single published speed figure because performance changes with model size and available CPU, GPU or other acceleration.

Llama for Windows is a strong match for Windows 11 users who want local chat without assembling a command-line toolchain, and for developers who need an OpenAI-shaped endpoint on the same machine. Its shared Hugging Face cache is useful if you already use compatible model tools. Choose a developer framework instead when your priority is Microsoft-supported application integration, Windows AI APIs or a broader production architecture.
