Technology can reduce some airborne odors, but it works best after you find and remove the source. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) says the most effective indoor-air steps are source control and ventilation with clean outdoor air. A purifier, monitor or fan is a supplement—not a substitute for cleaning, repairs or moisture control.
Start with the source, not the machine
A persistent smell usually points to something generating odor compounds. Ask what the odor resembles, where it is strongest and when it appears. Check the places most likely to create or trap contaminants:
- Drains, garbage, spoiled food and kitchen surfaces
- Pets, litter boxes, upholstery and carpets
- Tobacco or other smoke residue
- Paints, solvents, fuels and other chemical products
- Damp drywall, carpet, wood, insulation or furnishings
- Heating, ventilation and air-conditioning equipment, filters and duct areas
- Hidden plumbing leaks or water intrusion
Remove the material, clean it, isolate it or repair the leak. A purifier cannot eliminate mold growth, a wet building material or a blocked drain. Musty odors deserve particular attention: investigate moisture and visible or concealed mold rather than trying to mask the smell.

Use an exhaust fan while cooking, showering or using products that release vapors. Open windows or exchange indoor air with outdoor air when outdoor pollution, smoke, weather and security conditions allow. Ventilation dilutes and removes contaminants at their source, although it can increase energy use and affect temperature or humidity. If outdoor air is polluted, bring it in selectively and use appropriate filtration for incoming air.

Which technology fits an odor problem?
| Option | What it can do | Limits and safety | What to compare |
|---|---|---|---|
| Portable purifier with activated carbon | Adsorb some gaseous odor compounds; a carbon-plus-HEPA design can also capture airborne particles. | Carbon capacity varies widely, gas removal has no broadly used consumer rating, and filters lose effectiveness as they load up. | Amount and depth of carbon, room coverage, airflow, noise and replacement-filter cost. |
| HEPA-only purifier | Capture airborne particles such as dust and some smoke particles. | HEPA media do not target most gases or odor vapors. | Particle clean-air delivery rate (CADR) and room size; add a gas-sorbent stage when odors are the goal. |
| Ventilation or exhaust fan | Remove and dilute contaminants near the source. | Works only when replacement outdoor air is reasonably clean; may affect comfort and energy use. | Airflow, source location, weather and whether incoming air needs filtration. |
| Low-cost air-quality monitor | Track selected measurements such as particulate matter (PM), carbon dioxide, temperature, humidity and, on some models, additional pollutants. | It cannot identify every smell molecule or prove that a room is healthy. | Which sensors are included, calibration or validation information, placement and data access. |
| Ozone generator or ozone-producing ionizer | Marketed as an odor-treatment device. | EPA warns against use in occupied spaces. Ozone can irritate lungs and is generally ineffective for indoor pollution control at concentrations considered safe. | Avoid for occupied rooms. For any technology that may generate ozone, look for UL 2998 certification and independent, quantitative, as-used data. |
Choosing an activated-carbon purifier
For gases and odor compounds, EPA recommends a portable air cleaner with activated carbon or another gas-sorbent filter. Carbon works by adsorbing molecules onto its surface. In general, a larger amount of carbon gives the filter more adsorption capacity than a thin carbon coating.
What to check before buying
- Carbon quantity and depth: Look for a substantial carbon bed or cartridge and a clearly stated amount of carbon. A particle CADR number does not rate gas removal, so a high CADR alone is not evidence that a unit will remove odors well.
- Room sizing and airflow: Select a model intended for the room where the odor occurs. More airflow can move more contaminated air through the filter, but fan speed affects noise and electricity use.
- Filter replacement: Confirm the replacement schedule, price and availability. Saturated carbon can stop adsorbing effectively, so maintenance is part of the odor-control plan.
- Particle filtration: If the odor source also produces smoke, dust or other particles, a combination carbon-and-HEPA design addresses both categories. HEPA alone does not replace carbon for gaseous odors.
What air-quality monitors can—and cannot—tell you
A monitor is useful for trends in the pollutants its sensors actually measure. For example, a rise in PM during cooking may show that particle levels are changing, while humidity and carbon-dioxide readings can reveal ventilation patterns. Those readings do not identify every odor compound, locate a hidden leak or certify that the air is safe. Place the device where people breathe, away from a window, supply vent, stove plume or direct exhaust, and interpret changes alongside the timing of activities and ventilation.

Why to avoid ozone in occupied rooms
EPA states that no federal agency has approved ozone generators for use in occupied spaces. At levels considered safe, ozone is generally ineffective for controlling indoor pollution; higher levels can harm the lungs and create additional indoor pollutants. The California Air Resources Board likewise says ozone generators do not clean the air and add harmful indoor pollution. Do not use an ozone generator as a routine deodorizer while people or pets are present. CDC/NIOSH guidance recommends UL 2998 certification for technologies that may generate ozone and calls for quantitative, preferably independent performance data measured under as-used conditions.

- Characterize the smell: Note whether it is musty, smoky, chemical, sewage-like, cooking-related or pet-related, and record when it appears.
- Inspect likely sources: Check drains, waste, food, pets, smoke residue, products, damp materials, HVAC components and hidden leaks.
- Remove or repair: Clean contamination, discard affected materials when necessary, fix plumbing or building leaks and control moisture.
- Ventilate at the source: Run an exhaust fan or exchange indoor air with clean outdoor air when conditions permit.
- Filter residual airborne compounds: Use a room-sized portable purifier with substantial activated carbon; add HEPA when particles are also a concern.
- Maintain the system: Replace carbon and particle filters according to the manufacturer’s schedule and keep prefilters clean.
- Use monitoring for evidence: Track only the pollutants and conditions the monitor measures, comparing readings with activities and ventilation changes.
- Escalate unresolved problems: If odor persists after cleaning and repairs, or if there is suspected mold, sewage contamination, chemical exposure or a health reaction, seek a qualified building, HVAC or environmental professional.
Bottom line on odor technology
Find and eliminate the source, then ventilate with clean outdoor air. For odor compounds that remain airborne, choose a purifier with a meaningful amount of activated carbon and plan for filter replacement; do not judge gas performance by particle CADR alone. Use monitors as limited trend tools, and keep ozone-generating devices out of occupied spaces.
