Live video streaming means delivering video for playback while the event being shown is taking place. The stream is created and sent as the event unfolds, but that does not mean every viewer sees it instantly: some delay can occur, and there is no single latency threshold that defines all live streams.

What live video streaming means

In a live stream, video is captured and delivered while its source event is happening. A typical internet workflow encodes the incoming audio and video, distributes the resulting media through servers or a content delivery network (CDN), and plays it in client software such as a browser or app.

Some streaming systems deliver media in segments and update a playlist or manifest as new segments become available. HTTP Live Streaming (HLS) is one example of this approach; segmented delivery is not a requirement of every live streaming system. The IETF describes the general streaming experience as a client receiving media for concurrent presentation from a server: RFC 8216: HTTP Live Streaming.

How a common HLS live stream works

Apple’s HLS documentation describes one way to create and distribute a live stream. The encoder prepares the incoming audio-video feed as encoded media and segments, while media playlists identify the available content. A web server or caching system distributes the playlists and media files; a CDN may help deliver them to viewers.

  • Easy Plug-And-Play: The Brio 101 works with most video calling platforms, including Microsoft Teams, Zoom and Google Meet—no hassle; it just works
  1. Capture and encode: An encoder takes the live audio-video feed and produces media in a format suitable for delivery.
  2. Prepare segments and playlists: The media is divided into segments, and playlists are made available and updated as the live presentation continues.
  3. Distribute the media: Servers or caching systems serve the media and index files to clients. A CDN can distribute those files across its network.
  4. Play the stream: Client software requests the relevant resources, reassembles the media, and presents it continuously.

This describes an HLS workflow, not a universal blueprint for live streaming. HLS can also deliver prerecorded video on demand, so the protocol itself does not mean that content is live. See Apple’s HTTP Live Streaming documentation and its archived HLS overview.

Live streaming versus video on demand

The key difference is when the source content is created. Live media is created and streamed while an event is in progress. Video on demand (VOD) was recorded earlier and is streamed from storage when someone chooses to watch it. Both can use streaming delivery; “streaming” alone does not tell you whether the content is live. The IETF explains this distinction in RFC 9317: Operational Considerations for Streaming Media.

Live streaming versus a video call

A live broadcast commonly sends one source to an audience: a presenter or event is the primary source, and viewers mainly receive the feed. A video call is typically two-way and interactive, with participants sending and receiving media. Some services combine broadcasting and audience interaction, so the useful distinction is the communication pattern—not the product label.

Does live mean the video is instant?

No. “Live” describes when the content is created and streamed, not a guarantee of zero delay between the event and what a viewer sees. Encoding, delivery, buffering, and playback can all be part of the path from source to screen. The cited standards do not establish one universal latency limit that makes a stream live; the amount of delay depends on the system.

Streaming versus downloading

With streaming, the client receives media as a continuing presentation and can play it without waiting for an entire long-form file to finish downloading first. A download, by contrast, is primarily about obtaining a file for storage or later use. The distinction concerns how media is delivered and used; either live or previously recorded video can be streamed.

What HLS adds—and what it does not

HLS is a specific protocol, not another name for live video streaming. It can provide multiple bit-rate versions of media and let playback software switch among them as network conditions change. That can help a stream continue across changing connection speeds, but these are HLS capabilities, not features that should be assumed of every streaming method. HLS also supports VOD as well as live broadcasts.
