Live Oak Bank advertises a 2.75% APY on its Business Savings Account, but the rate is variable and the account is not instant-access in every situation. Interest starts after a deposit posts, while some incoming transfers and check deposits can be held for five business days. It may suit a small business reserve that needs an online savings account, but cash needed on a fixed date may fit better in a different account or term deposit.
What the account pays—and what that rate means
Live Oak Bank’s indexed business overview lists a 2.75% APY, valid as of September 28, 2026. The bank says rates may change at any time without prior notice, so confirm the current rate before applying. The 2.75% is an advertised annual percentage yield, not a guaranteed return for the life of the account.
The same bank disclosure reports a national savings average of 0.37% APY for deposits under $2,500, citing FDIC Weekly National Rates and Rate Caps as of September 21, 2026. That is a dated benchmark, not a promise that Live Oak will always pay more than the market.

How quickly can you use deposited money?
Access depends on how the money arrives. Live Oak says interest begins when a deposit posts, compounds daily, and is credited on the last business day of each month. A transfer being initiated does not necessarily mean it has posted or become available.
| Money movement | Timing and availability |
|---|---|
| ACH transfer initiated in the Live Oak portal | Generally takes one to two business days. Incoming portal transfers are held for five business days once posted. The cutoff for incoming and outgoing portal ACH transfers is 4:00 p.m. ET. |
| External ACH sent to Live Oak | Live Oak describes funds as available immediately upon receipt. |
| Check or mobile check deposit | May be held for up to five business days. Mobile check deposit limits apply. |
| Transfer from Live Oak to an external account | Generally available at the receiving bank in one to two business days if initiated before the cutoff. |
These are the bank’s stated general timings, not a guarantee that every transfer will clear on the same schedule. If a payment, payroll run, or tax deadline depends on the funds, leave time for posting, any hold, and the receiving bank’s processing.

How to open and fund the account
The account is online-first. Live Oak asks for personal information about authorized signers, business information, and bank-account information, then verifies the information electronically. The initial deposit is held for five business days. The reviewed savings information does not establish a complete list of eligible business entity types, so confirm eligibility directly with the bank before relying on a particular structure being accepted.

How much is protected by FDIC insurance?
Live Oak describes standard FDIC coverage as up to $250,000 per depositor, per ownership category. The limit applies to a depositor’s combined eligible deposits in the same ownership category at the same insured bank; it is not a separate $250,000 allowance for every account.
Live Oak also says deposits may be placed through the IntraFi network to potentially provide aggregate coverage beyond the standard limit. That additional coverage is not automatic: applicable agreements, account titling, pass-through recordkeeping, ownership category, and deposits held elsewhere can affect the result. The bank cautions that the balance held at Live Oak itself may temporarily exceed the standard maximum before network settlement of deposits or after settlement of withdrawals. Ask the bank how your specific balances are treated and review its IntraFi and deposit-insurance disclosures before treating a larger balance as fully insured.

Business Savings or a Live Oak business CD?
A savings account has a variable rate and avoids a stated term commitment, though holds and transfer timing still matter. A business CD locks cash into a term and has an early-withdrawal penalty. Live Oak’s indexed overview lists the following CD APYs as valid September 28, 2026; these rates are also subject to change and should be checked with the bank before opening.

Live Oak’s business CD FAQ states a $2,500 minimum and a $250,000 maximum per account. Withdrawing principal early incurs a penalty of 90 days’ simple interest for terms under 24 months, or 180 days’ simple interest for terms of 24 months or longer. The higher listed CD yields therefore come with a real liquidity trade-off; do not put operating cash into a term you may need to break.

Who is this account best suited to?
- A good fit: a small business holding reserve cash that can tolerate online transfers, variable yield, and the possibility of a five-business-day hold on certain deposits.
- Less suitable: a business that needs branch service, cash deposits, or immediate access to every incoming check or portal-initiated transfer.
- Consider a CD instead: only for a portion of reserves that can remain committed for a stated term and for which the early-withdrawal penalty is acceptable.
Verdict
Live Oak Business Savings is worth considering for online business reserves: it has no opening minimum, no advertised monthly maintenance fee, and a dated 2.75% APY. Its practical limitation is cash timing, not just the rate: initial funding and several deposit methods can be subject to a five-business-day hold. Confirm the live APY, fee schedule, eligibility, and insurance treatment for your balances before opening.
