A widget is a small dashboard you choose and keep in a particular spot. A Live Activity is a temporary progress card that appears while an event or task is happening. For example, a delivery app could use a widget for general account or order information, while a Live Activity follows one current delivery from preparation to arrival.
The difference is therefore about purpose, lifetime, placement, and update technology—not simply whether a surface is interactive or whether it appears near the top of the screen.

- Live Activities show the progress of an ongoing activity, event, or task. The app starts one, and iPhone chooses the appropriate system presentation, including the Lock Screen and, on supported models, the Dynamic Island.
Both can refresh information and offer limited actions. A widget is a user-placed panel that can remain available as a continuing dashboard; a Live Activity is tied to an active situation and ends when that situation is over or the activity is otherwise finished.

Apple’s Human Interface Guidelines describe the second feature precisely: “A Live Activity lets people track the progress of an activity, event, or task at a glance.” Apple’s Live Activities guidance also discusses appropriate interactions and restrained alerting.
Widget and Live Activity compared

What an iPhone widget is
Apple defines widgets as an easy way to view current information from an app at a glance, citing headlines, weather, reminders, battery levels, and similar examples. Read the full description in Apple Support’s widget instructions.
You choose the location
A widget is part of your personal layout. Depending on the widget and iOS version, you can add it to:
- Today View: the panel reached by swiping right from the Home Screen or Lock Screen.
- Home Screen: alongside app icons, in the size offered by the app.
- Lock Screen: in the widget area available for the selected Lock Screen design.
Because you place it yourself, a widget can act as a standing dashboard. It may continue to show information even when there is no single event in progress—for example, a weather forecast or the next reminder.
It is not necessarily static
“Widgets are static” is an unreliable shortcut. A widget can update its displayed data and can expose actions. Apple gives checking off a reminder as an example of a widget interaction. The key distinction is not static versus interactive; it is a user-placed, recurring information surface versus a system-presented view of an active event.
What an iPhone Live Activity is
A Live Activity is designed for a situation with a meaningful beginning, progress, and end. A delivery moving through preparation and transit, a match currently being played, turn-by-turn directions, and an active workout all fit that pattern. The app publishes the state of that activity, and the operating system presents the information where it is most useful.
The system controls presentation
Live Activities appear on the Lock Screen. On iPhone models that support the Dynamic Island, the system can also present the activity there in compact, expanded, or minimal forms. You do not drag a Live Activity into a particular location the way you drag a widget. Apple’s documentation explains that the system selects the suitable presentation and supported location; see Displaying Live Data with Live Activities.

It follows a lifecycle
The app starts a Live Activity for an event, sends state updates as that event progresses, and ends or removes the activity when the event is complete. That lifecycle makes it appropriate for time-sensitive progress, not as a permanent replacement for a Home Screen widget. Apple describes Live Activities as useful when people need frequent updates over a few hours, rather than as an always-on dashboard.
It can be interactive
A Live Activity can provide quick controls related to its event, such as workout controls, and tapping it can open the associated app. It can therefore be interactive, but those interactions are contextual: they help you act on the activity being tracked.
Why appearance alone is misleading
Both surfaces are glanceable and may display changing values. Both can be built with Apple’s WidgetKit-related technologies, and both can lead back into an app. That visual overlap sometimes leads to the claim that a Live Activity is simply a widget resized for the Dynamic Island. It is not.

The presentation may share design components, but the data model and lifecycle differ. Widgets use timeline-based updates: the app supplies entries that WidgetKit can display over time. Live Activities are managed through ActivityKit, which updates the state of a particular ongoing activity and can use ActivityKit push notifications. Apple documents this distinction in ActivityKit.
How updates work
WidgetKit timelines
A widget does not normally ask the app to redraw continuously. Instead, the app provides a timeline of entries with dates or conditions, and WidgetKit decides when to display them. This model suits information that changes on a schedule or can be refreshed opportunistically. A weather, calendar, or reminder widget can remain in place while its underlying values change.
ActivityKit state updates
A Live Activity represents one tracked activity and its current state. The app can update that state while the activity runs. For remote changes, an app may use ActivityKit push notifications, allowing an event such as a delivery or game to advance without requiring you to reopen the app. The activity is still bounded by its event lifecycle rather than being an indefinite stream.
Why the distinction matters to users
If you need a standing snapshot, choose a widget. If you need the latest stage of something happening now, a Live Activity is the more natural design. A widget may not be the right place for every rapid change, while an ended Live Activity should not linger as though the event were still active.

What the widget might do
You could place the app’s widget on the Home Screen or Lock Screen to expose general account information, a shortcut to current orders, or another recurring snapshot that the app makes available. You decide whether the widget occupies your layout and whether it stays there after an order is complete.
What the Live Activity might do
For one active order, the app could start a Live Activity showing stages such as confirmed, being prepared, picked up, and arriving. The system could show that progress on the Lock Screen and, on a supported iPhone, in the Dynamic Island. When the delivery ends, the Live Activity’s purpose ends with it.
This example illustrates the boundary: a widget is the place you keep an app’s information available; a Live Activity is the progress card for one current delivery. The actual features depend on the app and its version.

Widgets are user-managed. The exact wording can vary by iOS release, but the standard iPhone workflow is:
- Choose a surface. Go to the Home Screen, swipe right to Today View, or wake the Lock Screen you want to edit.
- Enter editing mode. On the Home Screen or in Today View, touch and hold an empty area until the icons jiggle, then tap Edit and Add Widget. On the Lock Screen, touch and hold the Lock Screen, tap Customize, choose Lock Screen, and tap the widget area.
- Select the app and size. Browse or search for an app, swipe through the sizes it offers, and tap Add Widget or the equivalent control.
- Place and finish. Drag the widget where you want it, then tap Done. In Today View or on the Home Screen, you can later touch and hold the widget to edit, remove, or rearrange it.
Apple’s current location and editing instructions are in Add, edit, and remove widgets on iPhone. If an app does not appear in the widget picker, it has not supplied a widget for that location or your iPhone’s current software does not support the offered configuration.
How to manage a Live Activity
Allow or disable it for an app
When an app exposes the control, Apple’s route is:
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps.
- Choose the app.
- Tap Live Activities.
- Turn the feature on or off using the controls shown.
Not every app has a Live Activities setting. Apple calls this out explicitly in Access features from the iPhone Lock Screen. If the menu is absent, there is no app-level Live Activities switch for you to change in that location.
Use the activity itself
When an activity is available, interact with the controls the app provides on the Lock Screen or Dynamic Island. Tapping the activity can open the app for more detail. Controls and displayed states vary by app; a Live Activity is not a universal player or control panel.

Understand what you cannot control
You cannot manually pin a Live Activity to a chosen Home Screen position. The app starts it, and iOS determines the supported presentation. Your settings can affect whether the app is allowed to show one, but they do not turn it into a user-placed widget.
Device and availability caveats
Dynamic Island is not universal
Do not assume that every iPhone has a Dynamic Island. Apple describes that presentation only for devices that support it. A Live Activity can still use the Lock Screen on devices without a Dynamic Island, subject to the app and system support.
Features depend on the app
An app may provide a widget, a Live Activity, both, or neither. A widget shown on one surface may not be offered on another, and an app may expose different sizes or interactions. The absence of a Live Activities setting means the app does not provide that control, not that your iPhone is malfunctioning.
System presentation can change
iOS may present, condense, or remove information according to the device, context, and activity state. Developers are expected to avoid excessive or nonessential alerts; Apple’s guidance recommends restraint so that progress information remains useful rather than noisy. “Widgets are just shortcuts.”
Some widgets include tappable shortcuts, but their core role is showing current app information at a glance. A shortcut-only interpretation misses weather, headlines, reminders, battery levels, and other continuously useful snapshots.
“Live Activities are only for the Dynamic Island.”
The Lock Screen is also a Live Activity presentation. The Dynamic Island is available only on supported iPhone models, and iOS decides which presentation to use.
“A Live Activity is a permanent widget.”
No. A Live Activity tracks an ongoing event and has an associated lifecycle. A widget can remain in your chosen location as a continuing dashboard.
“Widgets cannot be interactive.”
They can be. Apple cites checking off a reminder as an example. Interaction alone does not identify which technology you are seeing.

“Every app with a widget also has a Live Activity.”
There is no such guarantee. Support is an app-level choice, and the available controls and locations vary.
A practical choice guide
Choose a widget when you want a standing snapshot
- You want information available even when no single event is in progress.
- You want to decide exactly whether it sits in Today View, on the Home Screen, or on the Lock Screen.
- You are comfortable with timeline-style refreshes rather than event-by-event progress.
- You want a recurring glance and occasional actions, such as checking off a reminder.
Choose a Live Activity when something is happening now
- The information has a clear start, progression, and end.
- Seeing the latest stage is more useful than opening the full app repeatedly.
- The app needs to update a particular active instance, such as one delivery, workout, game, or route.
- A system-managed Lock Screen or Dynamic Island presentation is appropriate.
For app makers: use both when their jobs differ
An app can reasonably offer both surfaces without duplicating them. The widget can provide a persistent entry point or recurring status, while the Live Activity can take over for the active event. Keep the Live Activity’s state focused on meaningful progress, use ActivityKit for its lifecycle and updates, and reserve alerts for information that genuinely needs attention. WidgetKit timelines remain the better fit for continuing, scheduled information.
Troubleshooting checklist
The widget is missing
- Confirm that the app actually supplies a widget for the surface you are editing.
- Try the app’s other supported locations; a widget available on the Home Screen may not be available in the Lock Screen widget area.
- Update or reopen the app if its widget catalogue has not refreshed, then check the widget picker again.
The Live Activity is not appearing
- Verify that the app supports Live Activities; a widget alone does not prove that it does.
- Check Settings > Apps > [app] > Live Activities when that menu exists.
- Confirm that there is an active event to track. A completed or cancelled task should not continue as a Live Activity.
- Remember that the Dynamic Island is limited to supported iPhone models; check the Lock Screen as well.
The information looks delayed
Widgets rely on WidgetKit timelines, while Live Activities rely on ActivityKit state updates and, where implemented, ActivityKit push notifications. Neither surface guarantees that every underlying change will appear instantly. The app’s update design, network availability, system decisions, and the activity’s lifecycle all affect what you see.

Think of a widget as a dashboard tile you keep, and a Live Activity as a progress card that exists while something is happening. Widgets are placed by you and refreshed through WidgetKit timelines. Live Activities are started by an app, updated through ActivityKit, and presented by iOS on the Lock Screen or—when supported—in the Dynamic Island. Both may be glanceable and interactive, but their purpose and lifecycle are different.

Can I place a Live Activity next to my app icons like a widget?
No. You add and arrange widgets yourself; the app starts a Live Activity and iOS chooses its supported presentation.
Will every iPhone show a Live Activity in the Dynamic Island?
