Neither chemistry is automatically best for every data center. Lithium-ion systems generally offer a smaller footprint, less routine maintenance, and a potentially longer service life. Lead-acid systems can cost less initially. The correct choice depends on the UPS design, required ride-through time, load and redundancy, temperature, safety engineering, replacement plan, and total cost over the period you will operate the facility.

What the battery is doing in a data center

A battery is one part of an uninterruptible power supply (UPS). When utility input fails or falls outside acceptable limits, the UPS uses stored energy to keep protected equipment powered while another source—usually a generator or a restored utility feed—starts and transfers. The battery therefore cannot be selected independently of the UPS topology, generator-start sequence, distribution design, and the load that must remain online.

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) describes UPS systems as incorporating energy-storage devices such as batteries and recommends maintaining batteries and capacitors according to the manufacturer’s instructions. DOE’s UPS guidance is a useful starting point, but a production installation still requires an approved battery system matched to the specific UPS model.

Data-center power paths may include utility service, switchgear, generators, paralleling equipment, UPS modules, and distribution to racks. DOE’s 2024 Best Practices Guide for Energy-Efficient Data Center Design advises planning for both present and future loads, checking UPS load factor, and defining the required redundancy. Not every facility load necessarily needs UPS protection, so the battery quantity and cost begin with a clear statement of which loads are protected and for how long.

Quick comparison

Decision axis Lithium-ion Lead-acid What to verify in a proposal
Footprint and weight DOE market research describes a smaller footprint than lead batteries. The same DOE report identifies the space required by lead batteries as a concern. Usable floor area, structural loading, clearances, service access, rack layout, and room changes for the specified installation.
Maintenance and replacement The DOE report describes less maintenance and a longer life-cycle in the data-center context. The report identifies replacement frequency and temperature management as concerns. Inspection and service intervals, monitoring, labor, spares, replacement access, warranty and expected end-of-life procedures.
Initial capital cost No universal data-center price is established by the cited sources. DOE’s storage characterization found lower initial capital cost for lead-acid in its comparison. Compare complete installed systems, not battery-only prices: racks, controls, cabling, room work, commissioning and testing.
Lifecycle cost DOE’s 2022 methodology includes charging, augmentation or replacement, operations and end-of-life elements. Replacement, recycling and decommissioning can materially affect total cost. Use the same analysis period, discount rate, energy assumptions, service scope, replacement schedule and disposal assumptions.
Safety The DOE market-research report flags fire potential and notes that standards and codes are improving. Lead-acid is not risk-free; the product and facility hazard assessment determine the controls. Applicable codes, chemistry-specific hazard analysis, detection and suppression, separation, ventilation and emergency procedures.
Performance and service Results vary by lithium-ion chemistry, controls and system configuration. Results vary by lead-acid design, temperature and duty cycle. Required autonomy, load profile, discharge depth, recharge, aging, temperature range and UPS-vendor compatibility.

The table is a screening framework, not an engineered design. Ask each supplier to state the assumptions behind every value and to quote an entire UPS-compatible system.

How lithium-ion performs in a UPS application

Where it can be advantageous

Lithium-ion can reduce the room area devoted to batteries, an important advantage when data-center floor space is expensive or expansion space is limited. A smaller installation may also simplify access and reduce the amount of building work, although the actual result depends on the selected product, enclosure, clearances and local code requirements.

DOE market research characterizes lithium-ion as requiring less maintenance and offering a longer life-cycle in the data-center context. Those descriptions do not guarantee a particular number of years. Chemistry variant, cell balancing, operating temperature, depth of discharge, charge regime, controls, warranty limits and the manufacturer’s replacement policy all affect the result.

What must be checked before specifying it

  • UPS compatibility: Confirm that the UPS manufacturer approves the exact battery system, voltage, capacity, communications interface, charging profile and protection equipment.
  • Monitoring: Determine what the battery-management system measures, how alarms are reported to the UPS or building-management system, and who responds to an alarm.
  • Temperature and installation: Verify the permitted operating range, cooling requirements, clearances, structural loading and access for service or module replacement.
  • Warranty and aging: Read capacity-retention conditions, permitted operating temperatures, cycle or calendar limits, exclusions and the process for replacing a failed module.
  • Fire-safety design: Have the authority having jurisdiction review detection, suppression, separation, ventilation and emergency-response provisions for the particular product.

A lithium-ion proposal that omits these items is not comparable with a complete lead-acid proposal. A lower room footprint does not remove the need for a documented hazard assessment.

How lead-acid performs in a UPS application

Why buyers still consider it

Lead-acid can have a lower initial capital cost. DOE’s 2022 Energy Storage Grand Challenge Cost and Performance Assessment reports that lead-acid had lower initial capital cost in its comparison. That finding is not a current quote for a particular data center, and it does not include every site-specific installation expense.

Lead-acid is also a familiar technology for UPS service organizations. Familiarity can simplify training and spare-parts planning where an existing facility already has procedures, test equipment and qualified technicians. The decision still has to account for the selected battery design and the conditions in the room.

Constraints that affect the design

  • Space and loading: The larger footprint identified in DOE market research may require a dedicated room, additional structural capacity, greater clearances or longer cable runs.
  • Replacement planning: More frequent replacement can mean shutdown coordination, lifting and transport, temporary capacity, labor and disposal work. Put those activities and their timing in the lifecycle model.
  • Temperature management: The DOE report identifies temperature management as a concern. Confirm the battery’s permitted range, room cooling, temperature monitoring and alarm thresholds.
  • Inspection and testing: Follow the manufacturer’s inspection, torque, impedance or conductance testing and replacement instructions rather than applying a generic schedule.

Lead-acid should not be treated as a zero-risk alternative. Ventilation, electrical protection, spill or gas considerations where applicable, access controls and emergency procedures remain installation-specific.

Initial price versus total cost of ownership

Battery-only purchase price is a poor basis for a data-center decision. A fair comparison prices both alternatives over the same service period and includes the parts of the system that change when the chemistry changes.

Costs to include

  • Battery modules, racks, cabinets, disconnects, fusing and cabling.
  • UPS charging equipment, communications, monitoring and controls.
  • Room construction, ventilation or cooling changes, structural work, clearances and fire-protection measures.
  • Factory testing, delivery, installation, commissioning and integrated load testing.
  • Routine inspections, remote monitoring, technician visits, consumables and spares.
  • Planned augmentation or replacement, temporary capacity and the labor needed to perform the work.
  • Energy used for charging and any efficiency-related operating cost.
  • Decommissioning, transport, recycling and end-of-life handling.

DOE’s 2022 assessment includes charging, augmentation or replacement, operations and end-of-life elements in its cost methodology. Its assumptions were developed for an assessment and may not match current data-center procurement conditions, so use the structure of the method rather than treating any grid-scale value as a UPS guarantee.

Build a like-for-like lifecycle model

  1. Set one analysis period and one discount-rate assumption for both chemistries.
  2. Use the same protected load, autonomy or ride-through interval, redundancy level and future-load scenario.
  3. Enter each vendor’s guaranteed capacity, degradation assumptions, operating-temperature limits and replacement trigger.
  4. Price electricity, maintenance labor, monitoring, room work, commissioning, replacements and end-of-life handling consistently.
  5. Run sensitivity cases for higher temperature, load growth, delayed generator start, replacement timing and changes in energy price.
  6. Compare present value, risk allowances and operational consequences—not only the lowest calculated total.

The cited sources do not establish a universal payback period, current installed price or model-specific warranty. A facility should request current, site-specific proposals before approving a chemistry.

Size the battery around the UPS and the load

Define the ride-through requirement

Start with the time the battery must support the protected load. That interval may be only the time needed for a generator to start and transfer, or it may be longer if the facility design requires additional autonomy. Document the generator start sequence, transfer logic, ride-through margin, recharge time and what happens if the generator fails to start.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Identify protected loads and redundancy

List the IT and mechanical loads that truly require UPS power. Then state whether the design is intended to tolerate a module, string, UPS, distribution path or maintenance event without losing the load. DOE’s 2024 design guide emphasizes initial and future loads, UPS load factor and redundancy; battery capacity cannot be selected responsibly without those assumptions. Read the DOE design guide.

Account for real operating conditions

  • Peak, average and growth load, including power factor and nonlinear loads.
  • Ambient and battery temperature over the year.
  • Discharge depth, frequency of utility events and recharge opportunities.
  • End-of-life capacity and the manufacturer’s permitted aging margin.
  • Available floor area, structural capacity, cable distance and service access.
  • Coordination with generators, switchgear, protective devices and monitoring systems.

UPS efficiency figures should be kept in context. DOE reports that double-conversion UPS efficiency improved to 95% or higher in 2023, but that is a UPS-system figure, not evidence that one battery chemistry is more efficient than the other in every installation. DOE’s guide provides that system-level context.

Safety and fire planning

Safety is a design responsibility for both chemistries. The applicable electrical, building and fire codes depend on jurisdiction, product construction, room arrangement and the authority having jurisdiction. The sources cited here do not establish one universal code prescription for every facility.

For lithium-ion systems, obtain the manufacturer’s hazard documentation and have the design team address detection, suppression, separation, ventilation, emergency isolation, damaged-module handling and fire-department access. DOE’s market-research report quotes an Uptime Institute chief technical officer as follows:

“While the rate of individual li-ion cell failures is typically quoted as rates of “1 in 1 million” to “1 in 10 million,” data centers have become so large that one data center may contain millions of li-ion cells. Fire safety standards, building codes, and the safety of li-ion batteries are improving, but fire department responses to data center battery incidents are likely to increase in frequency until the hazards can be engineered out.”

This is a warning about scale and hazard planning, not a measured incident-rate comparison between chemistries or proof that a particular product is unsafe. The report does not identify the individual by name, so the role-based attribution is the appropriate form. See the DOE market-research report.

Maintenance, monitoring and replacement

For either chemistry

  1. Record the UPS model, battery-system model, voltage, capacity, serial numbers and approved configuration.
  2. Follow the manufacturer’s inspection and test schedule; do not substitute a generic interval.
  3. Review alarms, temperatures, charging status, capacity trends and communication failures through the UPS or monitoring system.
  4. Keep an inventory of critical fuses, modules, connectors and other approved spares.
  5. Test the complete power path under an approved procedure, with operations and safety controls in place.
  6. Document capacity decline, corrective work, warranty claims and the planned replacement date.

Replacement discipline

Use only a battery approved for the specific UPS model and battery system. Voltage, capacity, connector, communications, charging behavior, enclosure, monitoring and safety characteristics must match. A generic marketplace listing may use the phrase “UPS replacement battery,” but that phrase does not establish suitability for a data-center installation. DOE’s UPS guidance directs operators to maintain battery components according to manufacturer instructions. Consult the DOE UPS page and the UPS manufacturer’s documentation.

Plan the work as an operational change: arrange temporary protection if required, verify lifting and access routes, schedule commissioning and testing, update records, and send removed batteries through the required recycling or disposal channel.

Market figures: useful context, not a buying forecast

The DOE market-research report reproduces a Frost & Sullivan estimate that lithium-ion represented 15% of the data-center battery market in 2020 and a forecast of 39% for 2025. The first is a historical estimate; the second was a forecast published before 2025. Neither is a verified current installed-market share, and neither predicts what is best for an individual facility. Review the report’s attribution and dates.

Likewise, the report’s quoted cell-failure range is an attributed statement, not a current independently validated rate for a particular battery product, chemistry variant or installation. Use it to frame the importance of engineering and emergency planning, not to calculate an expected number of incidents.

A procurement process that produces a defensible choice

  1. Write the operating requirement. State protected kW and kVA, autonomy, generator-start and transfer assumptions, recharge expectations, redundancy, future load and acceptable maintenance modes.
  2. Survey the site. Measure usable area, structural loading, clearances, cable routes, temperature, cooling capacity, access and fire-service constraints.
  3. Issue one specification to both options. Require lithium-ion and lead-acid suppliers to quote the same load, autonomy, redundancy, analysis period and commissioning scope.
  4. Demand complete system pricing. Include racks or cabinets, controls, monitoring, protection, room modifications, installation, testing, maintenance, replacements and end-of-life handling.
  5. Verify compatibility. Obtain written approval for the exact battery system from the UPS manufacturer or authorized integrator.
  6. Review safety with the authority having jurisdiction. Confirm applicable codes, detection, suppression, separation, ventilation, emergency isolation and response procedures.
  7. Model lifecycle risk. Compare replacement timing, capacity guarantees, temperature sensitivity, service availability and the consequences of a failed module or delayed replacement.
  8. Document the decision. Preserve assumptions, calculations, warranties, test plans, maintenance procedures, training requirements and disposal arrangements.

Which chemistry fits common scenarios?

Space-constrained expansion

Lithium-ion deserves close evaluation when floor area, structural loading or access is the limiting constraint. Confirm that the space saving remains after required clearances, enclosures, monitoring and fire-safety measures are included.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Lowest initial capital budget

Lead-acid may be attractive when initial capital is the dominant constraint, but include room work, maintenance and future replacement before accepting the lowest bid. A lower purchase price can produce a higher lifecycle cost if replacements and labor occur more often.

Existing facility with established lead-acid operations

An incumbent lead-acid design may remain practical when the room, cooling, procedures and service capability already match it. Recheck future load, replacement logistics and available space rather than assuming the existing arrangement will scale indefinitely.

New build with a long operating horizon

Compare both systems over the planned service period. Lithium-ion’s footprint and maintenance characteristics may have greater value over a long horizon, while the result still depends on warranty, degradation, safety work and the chosen lifecycle assumptions.

Questions to put in every vendor proposal

  • What exact UPS models and firmware versions are approved?
  • What chemistry variant, module voltage, usable capacity and end-of-life capacity are specified?
  • What autonomy is guaranteed at the stated load, temperature and aging condition?
  • What monitoring, communications and alarm integration are included?
  • Which maintenance tasks are required, at what intervals, and by whom?
  • What are the warranty’s temperature, capacity, cycle, calendar-life and replacement conditions?
  • What room, structural, cooling, ventilation, detection and suppression work is included?
  • What are the response times for a failed module, and are spare modules held locally?
  • What testing, commissioning records and operator training are included?
  • How will removed batteries be transported, recycled or disposed of, and at whose cost?

Bottom line for a data-center decision

Choose lithium-ion when its space, maintenance and lifecycle benefits remain after compatibility and safety work are priced. Choose lead-acid when its lower initial cost and existing operational capabilities outweigh the footprint, temperature-management and replacement burden. In both cases, buy an engineered UPS battery system—not an isolated battery—and compare current, UPS-approved proposals using identical autonomy, redundancy, service period and safety assumptions.
