There is no chemistry that wins every AI data-center UPS project. Lithium-ion usually delivers more power and energy in less space and can lengthen replacement intervals, while lead-acid remains a mature, widely understood option that can be economical when space, maintenance access and duty requirements are favorable. The correct choice follows from the required autonomy and discharge rate, UPS or rack-BBU architecture, temperature, load growth, redundancy, safety design, service access and a site-specific lifecycle-cost model.
Compare complete, approved battery-and-UPS systems—not cell chemistry in isolation. A facility-scale battery energy storage system (BESS) has a different architecture and code scope from an UPS battery, even when both use lithium cells. Use the framework below to turn the chemistry question into an engineered decision.
Start by defining the power problem
AI loads make the battery decision more consequential because high-density racks can increase both the instantaneous ride-through power and the amount of equipment that must remain online during a generator start or utility transfer. Write the duty specification before requesting prices.
Recommended Free Tools
Specify autonomy and discharge rate
State the protected load in kW (and kVA where the UPS manufacturer requires it), the minimum runtime, the end-of-discharge voltage, the generator-start and transfer sequence, and the recharge window. A battery that supplies a light load for 30 minutes is not interchangeable with one that supplies a heavy load for five minutes. Compare usable energy and power at the actual discharge rate and duration, not the nameplate ampere-hours.

The display of FNIRSI battery tester adopts advanced color HD technology and was designed with excellent layout. Compared with traditional monochrome displays, it can present test results more clearly and vividly, greatly enhancing the user's measurement experience.
Define the architecture
Identify whether batteries are connected to a centralized UPS DC bus, distributed in modular UPS cabinets, or integrated as 48 V direct-current rack battery backup units (BBUs). Include the number of strings, parallel paths, bypass arrangements, maintenance bypass, and the required fault tolerance. A rack BBU and a central UPS battery can both be called a “UPS battery,” but their voltage, controls, service procedures and failure domains differ.
Plan for the future load
Model the initial IT load, the expected AI-rack density, power-use effectiveness, and the timing of expansions. Oversizing a lead-acid room can consume valuable floor area; oversizing lithium-ion modules can lock in unused capital and thermal-management capacity. Ask vendors to show how additional strings or cabinets will be added without taking protected capacity offline.
Record site conditions
Capture the battery-room or cabinet temperature range, humidity, altitude, seismic category, flood exposure, ventilation, fire compartments, access routes, floor loading and the distance to the UPS. Temperature affects capacity, aging, charging and warranty conditions. The battery location also determines cable losses, arc-flash boundaries, detection, suppression and replacement logistics.
What each chemistry actually means
Lithium-ion
“Lithium-ion” covers several chemistries and product designs. Lithium iron phosphate (LFP) and nickel-manganese-cobalt (NMC) have different energy density, thermal behavior, voltage curves and control requirements. A complete system normally includes a battery-management system (BMS), contactors, fusing, temperature sensors, communications and a specified enclosure. The BMS can report cell or module conditions and restrict charging or discharging when limits are reached.
Vendor comparisons commonly show lithium-ion delivering higher power and energy density than lead-acid. Vertiv describes those advantages, along with lower maintenance and longer life, in its UPS white paper; its numerical claims are vendor claims rather than a universal result. Vertiv’s UPS lithium-ion white paper should therefore be used as a product-comparison input, not as a site-independent guarantee.
Lead-acid
Valve-regulated lead-acid (VRLA), including absorbed-glass-mat and pure-lead designs, is an established UPS technology with familiar charging, testing and replacement practices. “Lead-acid” is not one performance class: plate design, electrolyte, temperature, discharge rate, float voltage and maintenance determine service life. Riello UPS’s August 5, 2024 comparison separates conventional lead-acid, pure lead and lithium-ion across design life, service life, temperature tolerance, maintenance and total cost; treat those comparisons as vendor material produced with C&D Technologies, not as a universal ranking. Riello UPS battery comparison
Comparison at a glance
| Decision axis | Lithium-ion considerations | Lead-acid considerations | What to require in the bid |
|---|---|---|---|
| Footprint and density | Often higher power and energy density in vendor comparisons. | Generally requires more installation space for comparable duty, depending on design. | A scaled layout showing cabinets, clearances, cable paths, access and floor loading for the specified autonomy. |
| Replacement interval | Can lengthen intervals; chemistry, temperature, controls and operating profile matter. | Established technology, but life varies substantially with battery type and conditions. | Separate design life from expected service life and show replacement labor, disposal and outage assumptions. |
| Initial and lifecycle cost | Often higher purchase price; reduced space, maintenance or replacements may offset it. | May have lower initial price; replacement, cooling, space and labor can dominate later cost. | A discounted cash-flow model using your load, tariff, labor, room and replacement assumptions—not a generic payback. |
| Maintenance and monitoring | BMS and string or module telemetry are common in described systems. | Monitoring and testing requirements depend on string design and battery type. | A point-by-point list of alarms, data retention, remote access, testing and service procedures. |
| Performance | Compare usable capacity, discharge power, recharge behavior and autonomy at the required temperature. | The same metrics apply; high-rate behavior must be checked against the UPS specification. | Manufacturer curves at the actual end voltage, temperature, discharge rate and aging point. |
| Safety and approvals | Cell chemistry, BMS, thermal controls, enclosure, testing and local codes all matter. | Has different electrical, ventilation and handling hazards; it is not risk-free. | System-level hazard analysis, certification scope, emergency procedures and authority-having-jurisdiction (AHJ) acceptance. |
| Architecture | Available for rack-integrated BBU and centralized UPS products, depending on supplier. | Common in centralized standby UPS installations and other established designs. | Compare like-for-like architectures; do not use a rack-BBU result as a direct central-UPS comparison. |
The dimensions above align with the chemistry framework in the IEEE expert-view article, vendor UPS comparisons and UL’s discussion of UPS and ESS scope.

Size the battery for the real duty
- Calculate the protected load. Use measured or defensible design values for IT, networking, cooling controls and other loads that remain on the UPS. State power factor and any nonlinear-load assumptions.
- Set the autonomy endpoint. Define the seconds or minutes needed for ride-through, generator start, transfer and stabilization. If the site requires longer operation without generators, treat that as an energy-storage use case rather than silently stretching a short-duration UPS design.
- Apply the discharge profile. Request voltage, current and usable-energy curves at the UPS’s actual discharge rate, cutoff voltage, ambient temperature and end-of-life capacity. A battery’s nominal ampere-hour rating does not reveal its high-rate performance.
- Include aging and redundancy. Size to the manufacturer’s end-of-life capacity, not new-battery capacity. Show N, N+1 or 2N strings, the effect of one failed module or string, and whether maintenance can occur without losing the required rating.
- Check recharge and generator interaction. Confirm charger capacity, maximum recharge current, generator loading, harmonic limits and the time to restore reserve. Lithium systems can accept different charging profiles from lead-acid systems; the UPS charger and BMS must be compatible.
- Validate the physical design. Verify rack or cabinet clearances, cable ampacity, fault-current ratings, ventilation or cooling, lifting paths, seismic anchorage and fire separation before selecting a room or container.
- Witness acceptance tests. Require documented factory tests, communications checks, alarms, breaker coordination, autonomy verification where practical, and an approved commissioning plan. Record baseline measurements for future maintenance.
How to interpret cycle-life and service-life claims
Cycle-life figures are meaningful only with their test conditions. Depth of discharge (DoD), temperature, charge and discharge rate, rest periods and the end-of-life definition can change the result by multiples. Never rank chemistries by two numbers measured under different protocols.
Huawei’s data-center lithium-battery safety paper publishes example curves under stated test conditions. In those examples, lithium-ion is approximately 3,000 cycles at 100% DoD and 6,000 cycles at 50% DoD; lead-acid is approximately 150 cycles at 100% DoD and 600 cycles at 50% DoD. These are Huawei paper figures—not universal specifications—and the paper’s temperature, rate and end-of-life criteria must travel with any quotation. Huawei Digital Power safety paper
Calendar life can matter more than cycle life in a standby UPS that rarely discharges. Ask for capacity-retention data at your float or standby temperature, the warranty’s allowable operating window, and the replacement trigger. Distinguish:
- Design life: the period used for planning under specified conditions.
- Expected service life: the supplier’s forecast for your temperature, duty and maintenance regime.
- Warranty life: the contractual remedy period and capacity threshold.
- End of useful life: the capacity, impedance or alarm criterion that requires replacement.
Vertiv says lithium-ion UPS batteries can last two to three times longer than lead-acid and that savings over a UPS service life can be 40% or more. Those are Vertiv’s claims, and the available material does not disclose assumptions sufficient to apply them to every AI facility. Use them as questions for a site-specific model, not as a promised payback.
Build a site-specific lifecycle-cost model
No neutral source reviewed provides a universally comparable lifecycle-cost figure for AI data-center UPS installations. Build the model around your facility and show every assumption.
Include capital and installation
- Battery modules or jars, cabinets, racks, BMS, monitoring gateways and spare modules.
- UPS chargers, breakers, fuses, DC distribution, cabling and commissioning.
- Room construction, fire detection or suppression, ventilation or cooling, seismic anchorage and floor reinforcement.
- Engineering, permits, testing, freight, lifting and disposal of removed batteries.
Include operating and replacement costs
- Scheduled inspections, impedance or conductance tests, thermal scans, firmware management and alarm response.
- Replacement parts, labor, outage coordination, temporary capacity and recycling or hazardous-material handling.
- Energy losses in charging, conversion and cooling, plus generator-fuel effects during testing.
- The opportunity cost of floor area and the cost of expanding a constrained room.
Use comparable financial assumptions
Choose a study period that covers at least one expected replacement event for the candidate with the shorter life. Discount future costs, state inflation and labor assumptions, and run sensitivity cases for temperature, load growth, battery-price changes and an early replacement. Report net present cost and risk exposure rather than a single generic percentage saving.
Temperature, location and maintenance
Temperature is a first-order design variable. Higher temperatures generally accelerate aging; low temperatures can reduce available capacity and alter charging limits. Keep the battery within the supplier’s specified operating and storage range and model the hottest sustained condition, not only the room’s average.

Maintenance program
IEEE 1184-2022 is listed as an active guide covering selection, installation design, installation, maintenance and testing of stationary standby batteries, including the relationship between UPS chargers, converters and battery selection. It does not prescribe one universal test interval or UPS component design. Use the current edition, OEM instructions, warranty terms and site risk assessment to set inspection, monitoring and capacity-test intervals.
At minimum, document string or module identity, torque and connection checks where applicable, temperatures, alarms, impedance or conductance trends, firmware versions, test results and corrective actions. A battery tester is not automatically suitable for every chemistry or configuration; match its voltage range, test method and manufacturer approval to the installed system.
Safety, certification and code scope
Safety is a system property. Cell chemistry alone does not establish fire behavior, fault containment or code compliance. Review the battery, enclosure, BMS, UPS, distribution equipment, detection, suppression and installation as one design.

A BESS can provide longer-duration energy, peak shaving, renewable integration, demand management or grid services. It normally adds bidirectional converters, energy-management controls, switchgear, interconnection studies and an operating strategy beyond short-duration UPS ride-through.

The UPS battery’s primary duty is to maintain critical load during a defined interruption and coordinate with the UPS inverter and generator. A BESS may operate when the utility is present and may export or import power. Its controls, protection, islanding behavior, fire strategy, warranty and revenue assumptions must be evaluated separately.
Schneider Electric’s data-center BESS paper addresses this facility-scale architecture. Use it to frame BESS planning, but do not substitute a BESS sizing result for the battery specification of a listed UPS. Schneider Electric data-center BESS paper
What the Google rack-BBU example proves—and what it does not
Google reports that it began adopting lithium-ion rack BBUs in its 48 V DC rack power system in 2015 and shared the rack power-system specification with the Open Compute Project in 2016. In its first-party account, Google says the transition means it deploys one-quarter as many batteries and reduces battery waste; the article also names a milestone of 100 million lithium-ion cells. Google describes rigorous testing, including UL 9540A methods.
Those figures are Google’s reported results for a specific rack-BBU design. They are not an independently audited industry ratio and do not establish that a centralized UPS at another facility will use one-quarter as many batteries or achieve the same economics. Google Cloud’s rack-BBU account

Procurement checklist for an apples-to-apples quote
Put the following requirements in the request for proposal and require deviations to be listed explicitly:
- UPS make and model, topology, DC-bus voltage and charger limits.
- Initial and end-of-life load in kW and kVA, autonomy, cutoff voltage, discharge rate and generator sequence.
- Ambient and battery temperatures, altitude, humidity, seismic and environmental limits.
- Required redundancy, string or module failure tolerance, maintenance-bypass behavior and expansion stages.
- Capacity and voltage curves at new and end-of-life conditions, including the test method and DoD.
- Design life, expected service life, warranty capacity threshold, exclusions and replacement trigger.
- BMS or monitoring points, protocols, alarm priorities, data retention, cybersecurity and remote support.
- Cell, module, cabinet and complete-system certifications, test reports and installation limitations.
- Room or cabinet layout, clearances, floor loading, ventilation or cooling, detection, suppression and emergency procedures.
- Factory acceptance, site acceptance, commissioning, operator training, spares, response time and recycling.
- Five-, ten- and fifteen-year lifecycle-cost cases with labor, floor space, replacements, energy losses and disposal.
Common mistakes and recovery actions
Using nominal ampere-hours as runtime
Symptom: the calculated runtime is longer than the manufacturer’s curve at the UPS discharge rate. Fix: recalculate with the actual current, cutoff voltage, temperature and end-of-life capacity.
Comparing unmatched cycle claims
Symptom: one supplier quotes 100% DoD cycles and another quotes 50% DoD cycles. Fix: request a common DoD, temperature, rate and end-of-life definition or label the results as non-comparable.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Assuming a design-life label is a guarantee
Symptom: the replacement budget contains no temperature, maintenance or capacity assumptions. Fix: obtain expected-life data for the site and model early-replacement sensitivity.
Treating certification as transferable
Symptom: a component certificate is presented as approval for a different enclosure, BMS or UPS. Fix: verify the certificate’s model and scope and obtain AHJ acceptance for the assembled installation.
Ignoring service access
Symptom: replacement requires moving live equipment or removing a rack row. Fix: approve the physical layout and isolation procedure before ordering batteries.
Calling a BESS an UPS battery
Symptom: an energy-arbitrage system is expected to perform ride-through without UPS coordination or listed controls. Fix: specify the UPS and BESS architectures, controls, interconnection and protection separately, then test their interaction.
Decision rule
Select lithium-ion when its verified density, service interval, monitoring and operating profile solve a material site constraint and the complete system is approved for the installation. Select lead-acid when its established design, available space, maintenance capability and replacement economics meet the duty with acceptable risk. In both cases, require vendor data for the exact battery and UPS configuration, model the full service life, and have the designer and AHJ confirm safety and code compliance.
