The right lithium-ion power bank depends on what you need to charge: a compact, lower-capacity model is usually more convenient for occasional phone top-ups, while a higher-capacity bank with USB-C Power Delivery can support compatible tablets and laptops. Compare capacity, output, ports, size and weight, then check the bank’s marked watt-hour rating before flying.

Choose a power bank for the device you actually need to charge

A power bank is a rechargeable spare battery. For air-travel rules, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) treats power banks and portable chargers as spare lithium-ion batteries. Your first choice is therefore practical: decide which devices you want to charge, and whether you need one bank to serve several of them.

For occasional phone charging

If you mainly want backup power for a phone, prioritize portability and a suitable output for that phone. A smaller, lighter bank can be easier to carry every day than a large model designed for a laptop. Check its ports and maximum output against your phone’s charging requirements; capacity alone does not tell you how quickly it can charge.

For tablets and laptops

For a tablet or laptop, check that the bank supports the charging protocol your device accepts—often USB-C Power Delivery—and provides enough output wattage. A bank’s advertised maximum does not mean every connected device will receive that power: the device, cable and charging protocol must all support it. Also check how many devices the bank can charge at once and whether its output is shared between ports.

Capacity and output answer different questions. Capacity describes the stored energy; output describes how much power the bank can deliver at a given time. A high-capacity bank with insufficient output may be a poor fit for a laptop, while a high-wattage model may be unnecessarily large for someone who only needs an occasional phone top-up.

Compare the specifications that affect everyday use

What to compare Why it matters
Rated capacity Indicates how much energy the bank stores. Compare models using their stated ratings, but do not treat capacity by itself as a guarantee of a particular number of device charges.
Output protocol and wattage Check for a protocol and output your device accepts. Laptop charging generally calls for more output than a basic phone top-up; the device and cable must also support the advertised mode.
Ports and simultaneous charging Count the ports and note their types. If you will charge more than one device at once, check whether the manufacturer states how power is allocated across ports.
Size and weight Compare physical dimensions and weight with how you plan to carry the bank. More capacity and output can come with a portability trade-off.
Marked watt-hours (Wh) Use the bank’s Wh marking when checking air-travel limits. If it is not clear, calculate Wh from voltage and amp-hours, or confirm the rating with the manufacturer.

A high-output example: Anker 737 Power Bank (PowerCore 24K)

Anker specifies the Anker 737 Power Bank (PowerCore 24K) at 24,000mAh, with USB Power Delivery 3.1 and up to 140W two-way charging. Anker says full 140W output requires a compatible PD 3.1 cable and a device that accepts that input. Treat it as an example of a laptop-capable bank for compatible equipment, not as a universal choice for phone owners. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent measurements; verify the regional model and current specifications before buying.

How to calculate a power bank’s watt-hours

For FAA passenger battery rules, watt-hours—not milliamp-hours (mAh) alone—are the relevant measure. The FAA’s formula is Wh = volts × amp-hours. Convert mAh to amp-hours by dividing by 1,000.

  1. Find the battery voltage and capacity in mAh on the product label or manufacturer specifications.
  2. Divide the mAh figure by 1,000 to convert it to amp-hours.
  3. Multiply the voltage by the amp-hours. For example, 12 volts × 8Ah = 96Wh, the example given by the FAA.
  4. Use the product’s marked Wh value where available, and check the operating airline’s current rules before travel.

If a product listing gives only mAh and does not clearly state the voltage or Wh rating, do not assume that its mAh figure alone settles whether it meets an airline’s limit.

Can you take a lithium-ion power bank on a plane?

Under current FAA passenger guidance, spare lithium-ion batteries of up to 100Wh are generally allowed. A battery rated from 101Wh through 160Wh requires airline approval, and a passenger may carry no more than two spare batteries in that range. Airlines may impose stricter rules, so check with the operating carrier before departure. These are FAA thresholds; they do not override an airline’s conditions or other applicable rules.

What to do if a battery overheats

A damaged, overheated, wet, overcharged or defective lithium-ion battery can overheat and experience thermal runaway, according to the FAA. If a battery or device shows signs of trouble during a flight, the FAA instructs: “Passengers should notify the flight crew immediately if their lithium battery or portable electronic device is overheating, expanding, smoking, or burning.”

  • Choose compactness first if you mainly want a bank for occasional phone charging and do not need laptop-level output.
  • Choose compatible output if you plan to charge a tablet or laptop; verify the protocol, wattage and cable requirements for your particular device.
  • Choose capacity and ports around your routine if you need to charge several devices or spend long periods away from an outlet, while accounting for the added size and weight.
  • Check the Wh marking before travel and confirm the applicable rules with your airline, especially for a bank above 100Wh.
