Two 2023 studies point to different ways of making lithium-ion batteries safer: high-resolution x-ray imaging exposed persistent, localized current hotspots after fast charging, while an optical fiber placed inside a lithium iron phosphate cell detected a pressure surge that followed a temperature warning shoulder during overheating. Both findings could improve diagnosis, monitoring and thermal-runaway warnings. Neither is a proven consumer technology that prevents a battery fire.
What the two studies actually discovered
The headline combines two separate projects performed by different teams with different goals. Nitash Balsara and colleagues at the University of California, Berkeley, used micro x-ray computed tomography at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory’s Advanced Light Source (ALS) to look at anodes after fast charging. A second team from the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) and Jinan University embedded optical sensors inside lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cells and then heated fully charged cells until they entered a dangerous failure sequence.
The x-ray work is about finding hidden non-uniformity: the average lithiation current looked relatively modest, but some locations carried much higher current than their surroundings, and those high-current locations persisted. The fiber work is about detecting a developing failure from inside the cell: temperature and pressure changed in a pattern that could provide an early warning before the most violent stage of thermal runaway.
That distinction matters. A measurement that reveals a hazard is not the same as a system that removes the hazard. The studies suggest where battery-management systems, manufacturing checks and safety tests might improve, but they do not establish a fire-prevention product, a validated alarm threshold or a deployment timetable.

Why an internal battery fault can become a fire
A lithium-ion cell stores a large amount of energy in closely packed electrodes and a flammable liquid electrolyte. During normal operation, lithium ions move between the electrodes while electrons travel through the external circuit. Fast charging, manufacturing defects, mechanical damage or excessive heat can make conditions inside the cell uneven. One region may become hotter or more chemically reactive than the rest.
If heat-generating reactions accelerate faster than the cell can shed heat, the cell can enter thermal runaway. The temperature rises, the electrolyte can vaporize, internal pressure increases and additional reactions release still more heat. A ruptured cell can vent hot gases; if those gases ignite, the result is a fire or explosion. The two 2023 studies examine different points in that chain: one maps an electrical irregularity that may create a vulnerable region, and the other measures the physical changes that accompany an accelerating failure.
These mechanisms are general safety context, not a claim that either team measured every possible cause of a field fire. The published reports do not provide a population-wide fire rate, a fatality rate or a universal trigger temperature.

How the Berkeley team looked inside an anode
Balsara’s group used micro x-ray computed tomography at the ALS to examine anodes after fast charging. Tomography creates a three-dimensional view from x-ray measurements, allowing investigators to inspect variations within an electrode rather than relying only on a cell’s average voltage, current or surface temperature.

The important comparison was between the average lithiation current and the current at individual locations. The average was relatively modest, but some areas experienced much higher current. Those outliers were not random snapshots that disappeared immediately; the report says the high-current regions persisted.
Why a local hotspot could matter
A persistent high-current region can indicate that lithium is entering part of an electrode much faster than the surrounding material. Such non-uniform behavior may create local chemical or thermal stress even while the cell-level readings look acceptable. The team suggested that this type of hidden outlier could help explain reports of electric-vehicle fires that occur after a vehicle has been parked, when no obvious charging event is taking place.
That is a proposed connection, not a demonstrated cause. The researchers were still studying the mechanism linking the observed current distribution to a real-world fire. The ALS measurements are also a laboratory investigation, and destructive testing of the same type may not be possible under all beamline conditions. A hotspot found after fast charging therefore identifies a lead for safety work, not a diagnostic that an owner can apply to a car.
What this changes for battery development
- Average values may hide risk: a pack can report a normal-looking overall current while a small region behaves very differently.
- Manufacturing uniformity becomes a safety issue: electrode thickness, material distribution, contact resistance and other local variations deserve attention because they can affect current paths.
- Fast-charge validation needs more than pack-level data: cell-level and, where possible, spatial measurements can reveal behavior that ordinary sensors cannot see.
Anna Stefanopoulou of the University of Michigan praised this direction, saying, “I really like the work showing the internal and unmeasured currents!” Her comment captures the central value of the tomography: it exposes a variable that conventional battery monitoring generally averages away.

However, a fireproof battery bag provides the necessary protection. Peace of mind should not be a luxury—it should fit easily into your bag
Study 2: an optical fiber detected a pressure warning during overheating
One fiber, two sensing principles
The USTC–Jinan University team embedded two optical elements in a single fiber: a fiber Bragg grating (FBG) and a Fabry–Perot interferometer. The FBG’s reflected wavelength shifts with temperature. The interferometer’s resonance changes with pressure. Reading both signals gives a view of thermal and mechanical conditions inside the cell, rather than estimating them only from the outside.
The researchers placed the fiber inside fully charged commercial LFP cells and subjected the cells to simulated overheating. LFP chemistry is often considered more thermally stable than some other lithium-ion chemistries, so the test demonstrates the sensing method under controlled abuse; it does not prove that every cell chemistry will produce the same signal pattern.
The sequence recorded in the test
- Rapid heating began. The cell temperature rose quickly while the internal pressure increase was still relatively modest.
- A temperature shoulder appeared. At a later stage, the temperature curve flattened instead of continuing to climb at the same rate.
- Pressure rose sharply. During that shoulder, the pressure signal increased steeply.
- The chemistry passed an irreversible point. The report says the electrolyte had vaporized and further reactions were irreversible.
The combination is potentially useful because a temperature plateau alone could be misread as a stabilization. A simultaneous pressure surge indicates that the cell is still undergoing a dangerous internal transformation. The investigators proposed this pattern as an early-warning route for thermal runaway.
What the test did—and did not—show
The sensors had minimal effects on cell performance and were not damaged during the reported tests. That supports the feasibility of putting optical elements inside a cell for laboratory observation. It does not establish long-term durability across many charge cycles, operation in a complete vehicle pack, resistance to vibration or manufacturing yield at mass-production scale.

- 🔥【Why do you need lipo battery bag】- Do you know the potential dangers of lipo batteries? Once the battery is shorted, it will instantly generate high temperature and spontaneously ignite, which brings danger to you and your family. We designed this bag to minimize that risk, even though it can't withstand the heat and flames naturally generated by batteries for long time. But it will at least give you time to react to a spontaneous battery combustion.
- 🔥【Risk reduction】- Fireproof doesn't mean it can be endlessly exposed to fire and resist spontaneous battery combustion, we designed this product originally to reduce the risk of fire and stop the spread of fire, it is recommended that our products are stored in an open area with no flammable materials around to ensure maximum safety.

Nor does an alarm automatically stop a failure. A practical system would still need to interpret the signals, isolate the affected cell, control charging or cooling, and protect people from vented gases. The study demonstrated sensing, not a complete intervention chain.
Internal sensing versus external measurements
Putting a sensor inside a sealed cell can improve access to the earliest local changes, but it adds instrumentation and manufacturing complexity. External sensors are easier to install and maintain, although they may see a delayed or averaged version of what is happening inside.
| Approach | Potential benefit | Main drawback | Evidence status |
|---|---|---|---|
| Internal optical fiber | Direct temperature and pressure information from inside one cell; a pressure surge may precede obvious external signs. | Requires an optical interrogator, sealed-cell integration and a way to scale data collection; cost is unresolved. | Demonstrated in fully charged LFP cells under simulated overheating; no commercial system established. |
| External temperature or pressure sensing | Lower integration burden and potentially lower cost; easier to deploy across a pack. | May miss local conditions or detect them later than an internal sensor. | Suggested by an expert as a potentially sufficient field option; no quantified head-to-head trial reported. |
| Pack-level electrical monitoring | Already compatible with battery-management architectures and useful for routine control. | Averages can conceal a small, persistent hotspot inside a cell. | The x-ray findings show why additional spatial information could be valuable; no replacement system was tested. |
Stefanopoulou supports the safety goal but questioned whether the extra detail justifies field cost: “Although [the researchers] say the fibre is inexpensive and can be part of the standard manufacturing, the data acquisition might be another story.” Qingsong Wang of USTC and Tuan Guo of Jinan University likewise said, “it’s not cheap.” They suggested that optimization and a chip-based interrogator might eventually reduce the burden. A chip-based interrogator is a proposal, not an existing product identified by the study.

Not by themselves. The x-ray method is primarily a discovery and validation tool. It can reveal where charging behavior is unusually concentrated, helping engineers investigate electrode design, production variation and fast-charge protocols. It is not a practical roadside scanner or an onboard fire suppressor.

The optical fiber is closer to a possible warning device, but warning is only one stage of prevention. To turn an internal signal into a safety response, engineers would need validated thresholds for each cell design, reliable interpretation across temperature and age, communication hardware, and a tested action after an alarm. Possible actions could include stopping charge, reducing load, increasing cooling or isolating a module; the reported experiment did not test which response works best.
For that reason, claims that the sensor “prevents” fires overstate the evidence. The strongest defensible statement is that internal pressure and temperature measurements may provide information earlier than external measurements in some failure scenarios.
Practical implications for battery makers and operators
For cell and pack designers
- Look for spatially uneven charging behavior instead of relying exclusively on cell-average current.
- Use imaging and post-test analysis to connect local electrical behavior with later thermal or mechanical failure.
- Evaluate whether an internal sensor can be integrated without compromising sealing, cycle life or production yield.
For charging and thermal-management engineers
- Treat fast-charge validation as a local-uniformity problem as well as a total-current problem.
- Investigate temperature shoulders accompanied by pressure growth; a flat temperature trace does not necessarily mean the cell is safe.
- Design alarm logic around the complete signal pattern and its timing, not a single universal temperature number, because the studies do not establish one.
For safety investigators
- Preserve failed cells and document charging history, storage state and thermal exposure before destructive examination.
- Use internal measurements where feasible to distinguish an electrical hotspot from an external heating event.
- Separate laboratory evidence from field causation: a persistent hotspot is a clue, not proof that it caused a particular vehicle fire.
What remains unknown
| Open question | What is established | What is not stated in the reports |
|---|---|---|
| How often do hotspots occur? | Some locations carried much higher lithiation current and the outliers persisted in the examined anodes. | No population frequency or universal threshold is provided. |
| Do hotspots cause parked-vehicle fires? | The team proposed that they could help explain such reports. | A causal chain from the measured hotspot to a field fire remains under study. |
| How accurate is the fiber? | The FBG responded to temperature and the Fabry–Perot element responded to pressure; both survived the reported tests. | Numerical accuracy, sensitivity, sample count and long-term cycling performance are not given in the accessible report. |
| Can automakers deploy it economically? | The fiber had minimal effects on cell performance in the test. | Manufacturing cost, data-acquisition cost, pack integration and commercialization timing remain unresolved. |
| Will another chemistry behave the same way? | The overheating demonstration used fully charged commercial LFP cells. | The result should not be generalized automatically to every lithium-ion chemistry or cell format. |
Where the findings fit in the safety timeline
The x-ray study operates mainly before a product reaches a customer: it can help researchers understand how charging and electrode structure create local stress. The optical-fiber study operates during a controlled abuse event: it asks whether internal signals change early enough to support a warning. A mature safety architecture would connect those stages—manufacturing quality, charging control, thermal management, detection and emergency response—rather than expecting one sensor to solve every failure mode.

Both projects also illustrate why battery safety is difficult to reduce to a single dashboard number. A pack-level temperature may look ordinary while current is concentrated in one microscopic region. Later, a cell’s temperature may temporarily level off while pressure climbs rapidly. Seeing the hidden variable can improve decisions, but only if the measurement is affordable, reliable and tied to a tested response.
Bottom line for readers
The most credible takeaway is not that a new gadget has ended lithium-ion battery fires. It is that two complementary tools expose information ordinary monitoring can miss: x-ray tomography reveals persistent internal current hotspots after fast charging, and an embedded optical fiber records a pressure surge that follows a temperature shoulder during overheating. Those observations may lead to better cell designs and earlier warnings, but cost, scale, chemistry differences and response strategies still need to be resolved before they become proven field safeguards.
