A liquid staking derivative (LSD), now commonly called a liquid staking token (LST), is a transferable token issued by a staking pool in exchange for assets it stakes on a proof-of-stake network. It represents a claim tied to pooled stake and rewards; it is not the underlying stake itself. You can often transfer or sell the token, but that does not guarantee immediate redemption at the value of the staked asset.
What a liquid staking derivative represents
On Ethereum, a user deposits ETH with a pool or protocol. The pool stakes that ETH through validators and issues a token representing the user’s proportional claim. Ethereum’s protocol pays rewards to validators; it “doesn’t know your token exists.” The pool’s contracts, governance, and operators mediate how the claim is tracked and redeemed.
That makes an LST different from a native validator position. A token holder depends on the pool’s arrangements rather than directly controlling the validator or withdrawing through Ethereum’s validator mechanisms. Ethereum.org’s pooled-staking overview estimates that liquid staking protocols account for around a third of all staked ETH; the figure is an approximate, volatile estimate reported on a page last updated August 17, 2026, not a fixed share. Ethereum.org: Liquid and pooled staking.
How LSTs account for staking rewards
Two common designs show rewards differently. Neither accounting method is inherently better; the practical difference is how balances and applications interpret the token.

| Accounting model | What changes as rewards accrue | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Rebasing | The holder’s token balance increases. | Ethereum.org gives stETH as an example. |
| Exchange rate | The token balance stays constant while the amount of ETH redeemable per token grows. | Ethereum.org gives rETH as an example. |
Wallet displays and DeFi application compatibility can differ between these models. Some applications cannot handle rebasing balances, so a wrapped, non-rebasing version may be used for compatibility. Wrapping changes the token representation; it does not remove the underlying staking, contract, or market risks. Tax treatment may also differ by jurisdiction, so this general explanation is not tax advice. Ethereum.org: Liquid and pooled staking.
What “liquid” means—and how holders exit
“Liquid” refers to transferability and the possibility of trading the token, not a promise of instant redemption at par. Holders generally have two exit routes:

- Trusted by 6 million users worldwide (4.9 App Store, 4.8 Google Play) - buy, sell, swap, stake, and spend cryptocurrency directly. The secure offline storage wallet designed for how people actually use crypto wallets
- Redeem through the provider: The provider’s withdrawal process, available liquidity, and validator exit mechanisms can affect timing. For pooled staking, users generally do not interact directly with validator withdrawals: pool contracts and node operators control validators, and withdrawal credentials typically point to pool contracts.
- Sell on a secondary market: A sale may avoid waiting for the provider to process an individual redemption, but it depends on market depth. The token may sell below the value of its underlying stake.
Each provider operates differently, and redemption queues and available liquidity can change. Ethereum.org describes provider-mediated redemption and secondary-market sale as the routes for pooled-staking users. Ethereum.org: Staking withdrawals. Lido’s risk disclosure also discusses withdrawal and secondary-market risks. Lido: Public Risk Disclosure.

Risks an LST adds to staking
An LST carries risks from both the underlying staking activity and the system that issues and trades the token.

- Validator performance and slashing: Downtime or penalties at validators backing the pool can reduce value.
- Smart contracts: A bug or exploit in contracts that hold or account for assets can impair the token holder’s claim.
- Liquidity and price divergence: Limited market depth can make a token difficult to sell near the value of its underlying ETH; protocol redemption may also be delayed by queues or limited liquidity.
- Governance and upgrades: Protocol decisions can affect fees, operators, or token behavior, while holders may not control those decisions.
- Operator concentration: Reliance on a small group of operators increases centralization and operational concerns.
- Use in other DeFi applications: Using an LST as collateral or depositing it into another application adds that application’s risks to the staking protocol’s risks.
These risks vary by protocol and can change as its contracts, operators, and governance evolve. Ethereum.org and Lido’s disclosure describe the relevant categories, but they do not establish a universal risk level for every LST. Ethereum.org: Liquid and pooled staking; Lido: Public Risk Disclosure.
