Gallium-based liquid-metal thermal interface material (TIM) does not evaporate or simply dry out. A two-year electron-microscope sequence reported by Tom’s Hardware found that it reacts with the contacted metal, turns into a solid intermetallic layer, and then changes very little. Bare copper is progressively consumed, nickel plating greatly limits the reaction, and exposed aluminum can be damaged within minutes. Liquid metal can deliver excellent initial heat transfer, but it demands compatible hardware, careful application and periodic inspection.
What the two-year microscope test observed
Tom’s Hardware reported on 16 October 2026 a microscopy sequence by Roman “der8auer” Hartung. The sample was still visibly liquid after one hour. After two months, free liquid had disappeared and crystals covered the interface. At the two-year observation, the appearance was essentially unchanged. Between observations, the setup was kept under vacuum or in a nitrogen-filled box to limit oxidation.
Hartung’s conclusion was: “After a total of two years, this honestly did not change further.” That does not mean the TIM remained chemically unchanged. Most of the major reaction happened early, leaving a solid layer that no longer looked like liquid metal.

Gallium in common enthusiast TIMs reacts with the surface it touches. On bare copper, it forms copper-gallium intermetallic CuGa2; remaining indium and tin occupy other solid regions. The reaction layer grows at roughly 1 micrometre per day until reaching about 50–100 micrometres, depending on temperature and the available gallium. These figures should not be treated as universal for every alloy, surface finish or operating condition.

CuGa2 is not a liquid reservoir that can be restored by heating. Hartung said, “you will not be able to melt it again.” During normal CPU or GPU operation it remains solid to about 254°C, so a cooler cannot simply liquefy the reacted material and recreate the original interface.
What happens on each cooler surface
| Surface | Observed reaction | Thermal or mechanical implication | Practical assessment |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bare copper | CuGa2 forms and consumes copper; the layer can reach approximately 50–100 µm. | Reported conductivity is about 100 W/mK for CuGa2, versus roughly 400 W/mK for copper, according to Tom’s Hardware’s 2026 report. The intermetallic remains solid to about 254°C. | Usable only if the owner accepts reaction, residue and eventual surface refurbishment. |
| Nickel-plated copper | Gallium forms NiGa5; the reported layer was about 1–5 µm, with 5–10 µm shown on one presentation slide. | The reaction is approximately a tenth as thick as the reported bare-copper case. Nickel itself conducts less well than copper but shields the copper beneath. | The safer practical substrate for liquid metal, provided the plating is intact. |
| Exposed aluminum | After gallium breaches aluminum’s oxide film, it travels along grain boundaries. | In a demonstration, a 2 mm aluminum sheet swelled after about five minutes and became brittle in less than 30 minutes. | Do not use gallium-based liquid metal on exposed aluminum. |
Why nickel plating is preferred over bare copper
Nickel does not eliminate chemical reaction, but it limits how far gallium can penetrate. The thin NiGa5 layer acts as a barrier and leaves the copper structure largely intact. This is why nickel-plated cold plates are generally a better match than bare copper for a gallium-indium-tin compound such as Thermal Grizzly Conductonaut.

- Thermal Conductivity: Grizzly thermal paste has extremely high conductivity, perfect for even the most demanding configurations.
- Long Action: Conductonaut PS5 liquid metal has high thermal conductivity and is stable even with extended use. However, it CANNOT be used on aluminum components due to the risk of corrosion.
- Exceptional Results: Using this thermal compound will immediately lower temperatures, reduce equipment noise, and improve user comfort.
- Value for Money: Conductonaut is the best thermal paste for experienced users who want to enhance their system's thermals, as it provides up to 10 times more thermal conductivity than other thermal greases.
Inspect the plating rather than assuming every “nickel-plated” part is equivalent. Scratches, exposed edges, machining marks or a worn coating can create local copper contact. Once bare copper is exposed, the thicker CuGa2 reaction can begin at that spot.
Aluminum failure is a compatibility hazard, not a performance trade-off
Aluminum’s oxide layer can initially hide the danger. If gallium penetrates that film, it moves through grain boundaries and embrittles the metal. The reported five-minute swelling and sub-30-minute embrittlement of a 2 mm sheet demonstrate how quickly the failure can progress. Indium Corporation likewise warns that gallium-based materials should not contact most metals, including aluminum.

- [High thermal conductivity]: thermal conductivity: 79 W/MK. It guarantees that heat generated from the CPU or GPU is dissipated efficiently.
- [Top performance]: conductor is recommended for users who are looking for a top performance product with best heat dissipation.
- [Warning]: Electrically conductive liquid metal is for experienced users, beginners can learn to use it on youtube or use non-electrical conductive thermal paste instead.
- [Note]: This thermal grease must not be used with aluminum heatsinks!
Check the entire thermal path: cold plate, heat spreader, shims, mounting hardware and any exposed areas around the die. A nickel-plated contact surface does not make an adjacent exposed-aluminum component safe.
Long-term aging can involve more than the copper reaction
A separate peer-reviewed 2024 study of Galinstan on diamond-coated samples found solidification beginning in the second year and completing by the fourth. The authors attributed that pathway to oxygen-driven oxidation, hydrolysis into GaOOH and dealloying that left GaOOH crystallites plus an indium-tin-rich alloy.

- EASY APPLICATION: The package includes a syringe and a specially designed applicator for effortless paste distribution
- LONG-LASTING EFFECT: Kryonaut's unique structure ensures long-term effectiveness, remaining stable even at temperatures up to 80 degrees Celsius
- SURPRISING EFFECTS: Already at the first use of this cpu paste, you may experience a drop in temperature, which will reduce the loudness of your equipment and improve the comfort of use
- CLEANING WIPES: Comes with 6 Wet and 6 Dry cleaning wipes to easily clean and degrease the surface. Ensures surfaces are free of grease for better thermal material application
This study used a different material and environment from a CPU cooler, so it is complementary evidence rather than a direct replication of the two-year microscope test. It does show why “no visible change after two years” should not be interpreted as a guarantee of indefinite stability in every enclosure.
What the findings mean for maintenance
Liquid metal is specialist equipment for users pursuing very high power density, such as manually overclocked processors. Its initial thermal performance can justify the extra work, but the owner must plan for:
Best Value
- LIQUID METAL FOR MAXIMUM HEAT TRANSFER – Conductonaut is designed for experienced users who need very high thermal performance.
- MADE FOR OVERCLOCKING AND HIGH-PERFORMANCE SYSTEMS – Suitable for CPU and GPU applications with compatible contact surfaces.
- PRECISE APPLICATION WITH SUITABLE ACCESSORIES – Supports controlled distribution of liquid metal during advanced cooling projects.
- OPTIMIZED FOR NICKEL-PLATED COPPER – Intended for compatible cooler surfaces and direct heat-transfer applications.
- ELECTRICALLY CONDUCTIVE, SHORT-CIRCUIT RISK, NOT FOR ALUMINUM – Apply only with care and avoid aluminum due to material incompatibility.
- Electrical risk: gallium-based TIM is electrically conductive. A spill on exposed contacts can short a board.
- Surface inspection: periodically check for migration, exposed copper and changes in the cooler’s contact area.
- Residue removal: Tom’s Hardware reports that isopropyl alcohol and acetone did not remove the reacted film in less than five minutes. Thermal Grizzly’s TG Metal Polish & Restore uses a surfactant-based approach demonstrated on fresh residue, but a heavily reacted surface may still require mechanical work.
- Reapplication planning: removing the cooler can disturb the interface and reveal a reaction layer, particularly on bare copper.
For a nickel-plated cooler that is inspected and maintained, the thin reaction layer may remain serviceable for years. Bare copper has a higher material cost over time because the surface is progressively consumed and may need cleaning, lapping or replacement.
Lower-maintenance alternatives
Liquid metal is not the only way to reduce interface resistance. The appropriate choice depends on whether peak temperatures or long-term simplicity matters more.
- Graphene pad: Thermal Grizzly’s KryoSheet was reported by Tom’s Hardware as running roughly 3–4°C warmer than liquid metal. That is a manufacturer-associated claim, not an independent benchmark, but a pad avoids liquid spill and chemical reaction.
- Solid/liquid hybrid: Indium Corporation’s m2TIM uses a solid indium preform to contain liquid alloy, reduce pump-out risk and retain low interfacial resistance. Its 2025 data sheet reports 20,000 power cycles from 0–80 W with a 105°C maximum junction temperature.
- Indium alloys: Indium Corporation lists Indalloy 51E at 37 W/mK, 300E at 44 W/mK and 306 at 37 W/mK, all measured at 85°C. Those material figures are not directly interchangeable with a complete cooler’s thermal resistance.
- Conventional paste: A conventional paste is usually easier to apply and remove, but this evidence set does not establish a single conductivity, service interval or temperature penalty for every formulation.
A practical decision checklist
- Confirm that every contacted surface is nickel-plated or otherwise explicitly rated for gallium-based TIM.
- Reject the installation if exposed aluminum is anywhere in the liquid-metal contact area.
- Mask nearby electrical contacts and apply only the very small amount needed to wet the surface.
- Photograph the original contact area so later changes can be identified.
- Schedule inspection when the cooler is next removed; do not assume a “dry” appearance means the material evaporated.
- Choose a pad, hybrid TIM or conventional paste instead if maintenance, reversibility or spill safety outweighs the last few degrees.
The two-year result is therefore a stability finding, not a clean bill of health: liquid metal reacts quickly, solidifies in place and can remain unchanged afterward, while the underlying surface may have been permanently altered.
