For reliable Wi-Fi management from a Linux terminal, start with nmcli for commands and scripting or nmtui for guided keyboard navigation—both are clients for NetworkManager. A recent LinuxLinks roundup also names eight other free, open-source terminal tools, but their current support, backends, and capabilities are not established by the available project-specific evidence. Treat those names as a shortlist to verify, not a tested ranking.

How to choose a terminal Wi-Fi manager

The main distinction is between a command-line client suited to direct commands and automation, and an interactive text user interface (TUI) suited to keyboard-driven setup. Also check whether a tool controls NetworkManager or another service, what Wi-Fi operations it supports, and whether it is maintained and packaged for your distribution. A terminal interface is not necessarily a standalone network service.

NetworkManager describes nmcli as its advanced command-line client and nmtui as its interactive text client. The NetworkManager manual calls nmtui “a curses-based TUI application for interacting with NetworkManager.” The two are not separate Wi-Fi backends: both control NetworkManager.

Two documented starting points: nmcli and nmtui

Tool Interaction Documented Wi-Fi use Best fit
nmcli Commands List visible access points, connect by SSID or BSSID, rescan, and create a hotspot; also manage radio state, devices, and connection profiles. People who want direct shell commands or automation.
nmtui Interactive text interface Edit connection profiles and activate or deactivate connections; Red Hat documents creating and activating a Wi-Fi profile. People who want guided keyboard interaction, including without a desktop.

These are NetworkManager capabilities documented in its manual and reference material; exact commands and behavior can vary by installed version. Check the local manual before relying on a particular option.

Use nmcli for command-oriented work

The NetworkManager nmcli manual documents operations for discovering nearby access points and connecting by network name (SSID) or BSSID. Its Wi-Fi commands can also rescan and create a hotspot. For scripted workflows, nmcli is the natural starting point; consult its structured-output options and the installed manual rather than parsing display output as though it were a stable interface.

The manual says a new connection created with wifi connect supports open, WEP, and WPA-PSK networks. Enterprise authentication requires an appropriately configured connection profile; do not assume that a simple connect command covers every organization’s Wi-Fi setup.

Use nmtui for guided keyboard interaction

nmtui offers a menu-driven way to edit profiles and activate or deactivate connections. Red Hat’s RHEL 10 Wi-Fi instructions show adding a profile by entering the SSID and authentication settings, then activating it. That procedure is specific to RHEL 10; other distributions may package the interface differently or use different system defaults.

Check the Wi-Fi stack if a connection fails

A terminal manager can request network operations; it cannot fix unsupported hardware or a faulty kernel driver. NetworkManager’s README notes that wireless problems can stem from buggy or inconsistent drivers, and that out-of-tree drivers may be unreliable.

  • If the access point appears but authentication fails, check the credentials and whether the network requires an enterprise profile rather than the basic connection flow.
  • If neither nmcli nor nmtui can manage the device, investigate NetworkManager, the device, and its kernel driver before switching text interfaces.

These checks separate likely layers of failure; they do not identify a specific cause without system diagnostics.

What is and is not established about the ten tools

The roundup supplies ten names and short labels, but the evidence available here independently documents detailed behavior only for nmcli and nmtui. It does not establish that every named community project remains maintained, works with a particular distribution, or supports the same Wi-Fi operations. There is also no substantiated scoring data for a defensible “best to worst” ranking. Choose among the additional projects only after confirming their current documentation and package sources; do not infer equivalence from a shared terminal interface.
