On an x86 Linux system whose processor supports Enhanced IBRS (eIBRS), the Linux kernel documentation says to use eIBRS instead of retpoline and describes it as more efficient. Retpoline remains a software mitigation for systems and kernel builds that use it. Which protection is active depends on the CPU, available microcode, kernel configuration and compiler—not on a universal Linux setting.
What Spectre-v2 exploits
Spectre-v2, also called branch target injection, abuses speculative execution. An attacker influences an indirect branch’s prediction so a victim may speculatively execute existing code at an attacker-influenced target, sometimes called a gadget. Although the speculative work is later discarded, its effects on the processor’s cache can leave clues that may reveal information.
The Linux kernel’s “Spectre Side Channels” documentation describes several relevant paths: poisoning the branch target buffer (BTB), return stack buffer (RSB) attacks, influence from a sibling hardware thread when simultaneous multithreading (SMT) is in use, and Branch History Buffer (BHB) influence. Depending on the environment, the attacker and victim could be separate processes, a user process and the kernel, or virtual machines sharing a host.
How retpoline and eIBRS differ

The mechanism descriptions and Linux guidance in this table reflect the Linux kernel documentation, “Spectre Side Channels.” Its efficiency comparison is qualitative: it does not establish a universal workload performance difference. No directly comparable performance figure is verified in the Linux kernel documentation or the 2022 USENIX Security study described below.

Why Linux may choose one mitigation over another
Linux’s default behavior is intended to choose a reasonable mitigation for the current CPU. The kernel command-line reference describes spectre_v2=auto as the default-equivalent selection and says the available choice can depend on the CPU, available microcode, CONFIG_MITIGATION_RETPOLINE, and the compiler used to build the kernel. Consequently, two Linux systems—or two kernel builds on the same system—may report different mitigations.
The command-line reference lists explicit spectre_v2 choices including retpoline, eibrs, eibrs,retpoline, eibrs,lfence, and ibrs. These options are not a simple menu of universally interchangeable settings: what works and what is appropriate depends on processor and kernel capabilities. The default is generally preferable to forcing an option without first confirming those details.

The USENIX Security 2022 study observed eIBRS on the newer Intel systems it examined, including Cascade Lake and later examples, and retpoline recommendations for tested AMD examples such as the Ryzen 5 5600X. Those are observations limited to the study’s tested systems and kernel versions, not a current, exhaustive CPU support list. The paper also notes that IBRS availability depends on updated microcode.

cat /sys/devices/system/cpu/vulnerabilities/spectre_v2Linux documents status strings such as Mitigation: Retpolines, Mitigation: Enhanced IBRS, and combined status. The line may also report details about firmware, IBPB, STIBP, or RSB protections. Interpret the output as a report about that running system—not as a general guarantee that every Spectre-v2-related attack is prevented. The processor, firmware or microcode, distribution kernel, and its configuration all matter.
If the output is unexpected, compare it with the system’s CPU capabilities, installed firmware or microcode, and kernel build and boot configuration. A status label alone does not establish why a particular option was selected or whether every related isolation control is enabled.

What eIBRS does not cover by itself
BHB influence and BHI controls
Enhanced IBRS isolates branch predictor entries between modes, but the Linux documentation says the BHB itself is not isolated and may still influence which indirect-branch predictor entry is selected. Systems that support BHI_DIS_S use it to protect against Branch History Injection (BHI) attacks. Do not read an eIBRS status as proof that BHI or all Spectre-v2 variants are eliminated.

Linux also documents defenses for other paths and boundaries: RSB handling, including flushing on VM exit; clearing the BTB before switching guests; and IBPB or STIBP for selected process- or thread-isolation cases. The kernel documentation says Intel eIBRS systems include cross-thread injection protection (STIBP). These measures address distinct risks; their presence or behavior should not be inferred solely from the main mitigation label.

Vendor implementations should not be conflated. Linux distinguishes Intel Enhanced IBRS from AMD Automatic IBRS and legacy IBRS behavior, so a generic “IBRS” label is not enough to assume identical mechanisms across CPU vendors.
When to change a boot parameter
For routine administration, inspect the active status and let Linux’s default selection work unless a documented platform requirement or a specific troubleshooting need calls for a change. The kernel parameter reference says spectre_v2=on unconditionally enables protection and implies spectre_v2_user=on. Conversely, spectre_v2=off disables kernel and user-space protections. Linux warns that disabling these protections can permit data leaks; off is not a routine performance-tuning recommendation.
User-level controls such as prctl() and related IBPB/STIBP behavior can address cross-process or sibling-thread risks. They complement the kernel’s primary mitigation choice and can carry overhead when indirect-branch speculation is restricted. Whether to use them depends on the isolation needs of the workload and the system’s configuration.

The technical descriptions and Linux guidance above are from the Linux kernel documentation, “Spectre Side Channels,” and “The kernel’s command-line parameters.” The hardware examples are limited to the systems examined in the USENIX Security Symposium’s 2022 study on speculative-execution defenses. The kernel documentation’s statement that eIBRS is more efficient than retpoline is a qualitative comparison; these sources do not provide a directly comparable, general performance figure for current workloads.
