Linux can keep a useful PC in service when it does not meet Windows 11 requirements, but Windows’ rejection does not establish whether a specific Linux distribution will support that computer. Check the exact Windows 11 eligibility result, then test a Linux live session on the actual device before installing. That lets you check essentials such as Wi-Fi, sound, display, keyboard and touchpad without changing the PC’s installed system.

What a Windows 11 compatibility failure tells you—and what it doesn’t

Start by finding the specific reason Windows 11 is blocked. Microsoft’s Windows 11 System Requirements page points to PC Health Check and Windows Update as ways to check eligibility. The title does not identify the PC or its failed requirement, so there is no basis to assume the issue is the processor, TPM, Secure Boot, memory or anything else.

That result is about Windows 11 eligibility, not a verdict on Linux. Linux distributions have their own requirements, and hardware support can vary. A live test on your own PC is more useful than assuming that passing or failing one operating system’s check predicts how another will work.

Decide whether to stay on Windows or move to Linux

Windows 10 reached the end of ordinary support on October 14, 2025. Microsoft says an unsupported version of Windows no longer receives its standard software and security updates, although the PC can continue to run. See Microsoft’s explanation of what unsupported Windows means. Whether an extended-support arrangement applies depends on your Windows edition and region; check those terms rather than assuming coverage.

Check whether Ubuntu fits your PC

Ubuntu’s published figures are specific to Ubuntu Desktop 26.04: a 2 GHz dual-core processor or better, 6 GB of memory and 25 GB of free storage. Ubuntu describes the 26.04 LTS release as receiving five years of security updates and critical bug fixes, through April 2031. These are Ubuntu release details, not minimum requirements for all Linux distributions; consult the current requirements for the release you intend to use.

If the machine is below those figures, that alone does not prove that every Linux option is unsuitable. Ubuntu’s 26.04 release notes suggest considering a lighter Ubuntu flavor for some lower-spec systems. You still need to check that option’s own requirements and test the actual hardware.

Try Ubuntu from USB before installing

Ubuntu recommends checking its certified-hardware list where possible, but says you can try Ubuntu even if your exact device is not listed. Its live session runs from a USB drive without making permanent changes to the PC. Use it to check the components that matter to you, including networking, sound, screen, keyboard, mouse or touchpad, and any essential peripherals. Ubuntu explains the trial in its Try Ubuntu Desktop guide.

A live preview does not include every proprietary driver. Ubuntu says some proprietary drivers, including drivers for some NVIDIA graphics hardware, may instead be enabled during or after installation. Therefore, a component that fails in the preview is a reason to investigate its driver support—not proof that it can never work. Do not proceed on the assumption that installing will fix it; check the relevant device and driver support for your distribution.

Create the USB installer without losing its contents

  1. Choose a USB stick. Ubuntu specifies a drive of at least 8 GB for its bootable image. Back up anything on it that you need: writing the image erases the selected USB drive.
  2. Get the image and write it with an image-writing tool. Copying an ISO file onto the stick as an ordinary file is not the same as creating bootable installation media. Follow Ubuntu’s current bootable USB instructions.
  3. Boot the PC from the USB and choose the trial option. Use the live session to check hardware before choosing an installation path. The USB can serve for both the trial and installation.

Protect your files and check disk setup before installing

Back up important files before changing partitions or replacing Windows. Ubuntu’s installation guide warns that BitLocker encryption can prevent the installer from safely installing Ubuntu alongside Windows. It also notes that some PCs using Intel RST storage configuration cannot proceed until that configuration is changed or disabled. These are setup issues to resolve carefully, not reasons to guess at disk settings.

The installer offers different paths, including installing alongside Windows and erasing the disk. The right choice depends on the encryption and disk layout. An erase-disk option deletes the existing contents of the selected disk. Confirm your backup and the identity of the disk before proceeding; if you are unsure which disk or configuration you have, stop rather than selecting an option at random.

Use a practical go/no-go check

  • Proceed to installation planning if the chosen distribution meets its published requirements, the live test covers the hardware and devices you need, your files are backed up, and you understand the disk option you intend to use.
  • Pause and investigate if a key component fails in the live session, your essential applications have no confirmed Linux path, BitLocker or Intel RST affects the installation, or you cannot confidently identify the target disk.
  • Do not treat Windows 11 eligibility as a Linux compatibility test. Resolve that question through the distribution’s requirements and a trial on the specific PC.
