There is no universal winner. Zorin OS offers the clearest documented shortcut to a Windows-like desktop, but its Windows 11 and Windows Classic layouts are included in the paid Pro edition. Linux Mint 22.3 Cinnamon is a popular, completely free traditional desktop, and may be the better value if you are willing to judge the interface yourself. The safest choice is the one that passes your own app and hardware tests: run a live session, back up your files, and keep Windows available during a pilot or dual-boot period.

Linux Mint and Zorin OS at a glance

Question Linux Mint 22.3 Cinnamon Zorin OS 18.1
Current release Mint 22.3 “Zena,” announced January 13, 2026 Zorin OS 18.1
Support horizon Security updates through 2029 Support through June 1, 2029
Underlying base Ubuntu Noble package base with Linux kernel 6.14 Ubuntu 24.04 LTS
Windows-oriented layouts Not documented as a special Windows-layout feature; Cinnamon is Mint’s most popular edition Core has four basic layouts; Pro adds eight, including Windows 11 and Windows Classic
Edition cost Mint is described as completely free Core is free; Pro is a paid one-time edition
Try before installing Use Mint’s live installation media and current installation guidance The installer explicitly offers “Try Zorin OS”
Windows application support Use native Linux, web, or alternative applications; compatibility for individual Windows programs must be checked Native Linux apps first; optional Windows App Support uses Wine for many .exe and .msi files, but not all are fully compatible
Hardware information available here 2 GB RAM and 20 GB disk minimum; 4 GB RAM and 100 GB disk recommended; 1024×768 minimum resolution 64-bit Intel or AMD processors are supported; a directly comparable complete current minimum-requirements table is not established here

Those differences answer the headline only conditionally. Pick Zorin Pro when a specifically Windows-like arrangement is worth paying for. Pick Mint Cinnamon when a free, popular desktop and long support period matter more than a documented Windows-style preset. In both cases, your applications, printers, scanners, graphics hardware, and other peripherals should decide the final result.

What “easier for Windows users” actually involves

Desktop familiarity

A familiar arrangement can reduce the time needed to find settings, launch programs, and manage windows. Zorin is unusually explicit about this: Pro includes layouts named Windows 11 and Windows Classic. That is evidence of a deliberate migration aid, not proof of an objective usability victory. Mint identifies Cinnamon as its most popular edition, but the cited Mint material does not provide a head-to-head familiarity score or an independent test showing that Cinnamon is easier for Windows users.

People also differ in what they consider familiar. One person may prefer a single bottom panel and a conventional application menu; another may work faster with a more spacious or modern layout. Try the actual desktops instead of inferring comfort from a product name.

Applications and work routines

An operating system is easy to use only when it runs the work you need. Check every essential application before replacing Windows, including specialist business software, games, peripherals that depend on companion utilities, and documents with unusual fonts or macros. A familiar desktop cannot compensate for a missing application.

Hardware and recovery

Printers, scanners, Wi-Fi adapters, docking stations, fingerprint readers, graphics cards, and audio interfaces can behave differently under Linux. Compatibility varies by model and driver, so a live-session test and a small pilot are more reliable than a general claim that one distribution supports hardware better.

Linux Mint 22.3: what a Windows switcher gets

Edition and desktop choice

Linux Mint’s download information calls Cinnamon its most popular edition. It also offers Xfce, described as lighter on resource use, and MATE, described as a continuation of the classic GNOME 2 desktop. The popularity statement does not establish that Cinnamon is the easiest edition for every Windows user, and the lighter or more classic descriptions are not substitutes for testing the interface on your computer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Mint is presented as completely free, so there is no paid tier to unlock a Windows-named layout. You can still adjust a Linux desktop, but the material used for this comparison does not establish a direct equivalence between Mint’s customization options and Zorin Pro’s named presets.

Current release and support

Mint 22.3 “Zena” was announced on January 13, 2026. The Linux Mint team describes it as a long-term-support release with security updates through 2029. It uses the Ubuntu Noble package base and Linux kernel 6.14. A long support window is useful for a migration because you do not have to repeat a major operating-system change immediately.

Mint’s published hardware thresholds

Resource Minimum Recommended Qualification
Memory 2 GB RAM 4 GB RAM Linux Mint team, 2026
Storage 20 GB disk space 100 GB disk space Linux Mint team, 2026
Display 1024×768 resolution Not separately stated Linux Mint team, 2026

These figures describe Mint’s published thresholds, not a guarantee that every modern application will feel comfortable at the minimum. Browser tabs, office suites, photo tools, virtual machines, and large local files can need more memory and storage. Leave room for updates and personal data rather than treating the minimum disk figure as a target for a long-term installation.

Zorin OS 18.1: what is different

Layouts and editions

Zorin OS Core includes four basic desktop layouts. Zorin Pro adds eight additional layouts, including Windows 11 and Windows Classic. Pro is a paid, one-time edition; the current edition page should be checked for the live price before purchase. The extra layouts are a choice for people who value a specific visual starting point, not an assurance that every task will be easier.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Core is free and uses GNOME Shell, as does Pro. Zorin Lite uses XFCE. The edition names therefore combine two decisions: whether you want the additional Pro layouts and which desktop environment is appropriate for your hardware. Do not assume that Lite is a direct measure of Windows familiarity; its documented distinction is the XFCE desktop and lower resource use.

Release base and supported formats

Zorin OS 18.1 is based on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS and is supported through June 1, 2029. Its technical details list support for APT, Flatpak, Snap, .deb packages, AppImage files, and web apps. With optional Windows App Support, .exe and .msi files can also be attempted. Zorin supports 64-bit Intel and AMD processors.

The available information does not establish a complete, current numerical minimum-requirements table for Zorin that can be compared directly with Mint’s RAM and storage figures. Do not interpret the absence of a number as a lower requirement. Check the current technical-details page for the exact Zorin edition and computer you plan to use.

Trying Zorin without committing

Zorin’s installer provides a “Try Zorin OS” choice before installation. Use that session to inspect display scaling, Wi-Fi, sound, suspend and resume, Bluetooth, external monitors, printers, scanners, and the applications you use most. A live session may not expose every problem that appears after installation, but it is a low-risk first filter.

Which desktop will feel more familiar?

Why Zorin has the clearer shortcut

If your priority is selecting a layout explicitly labeled for Windows, Zorin Pro has the stronger documented case. You can start with Windows 11 or Windows Classic rather than manually approximating that arrangement. This can shorten the initial orientation period, especially for a household or workplace where several people expect a familiar visual structure.

  • ✅Supported UEFI and Legacy, Compatibility any PC/Laptop, Any boot issue only needs to disable "Secure Boot"

That advantage is conditional on accepting Pro’s paid edition. Zorin Core is free but does not include those eight additional Pro layouts. A layout preset also changes presentation, not application compatibility, driver behavior, or the underlying Linux commands you may eventually need.

Why Mint may still be the better fit

Mint Cinnamon is the distribution’s most popular edition and is available without a paid tier. If you want to spend nothing, prefer to evaluate a conventional desktop directly, or are comfortable adjusting panels and menus yourself, Mint can be the more practical starting point. The available material does not prove that Cinnamon is harder for Windows users; it simply does not claim a measured Windows-familiarity advantage.

A practical interface test

  1. Prepare a live USB for each distribution and boot one computer, or test each in hardware you intend to migrate.
  2. Open the application menu, file manager, settings, network controls, display controls, and power options.
  3. Perform a normal workflow: create a document, save it, find it again, connect a device, print a page, and change a display setting.
  4. Write down every action that required a search or an online explanation. Compare the notes rather than relying on first impressions.
  5. Repeat the test with the people who will actually use the computer. A layout that feels obvious to one user may be unfamiliar to another.

Will your Windows applications work?

Start with native or web versions

Zorin’s guidance recommends checking for a native Linux version first, then considering a Linux alternative or web version. The same order is sensible for Mint. Native applications generally integrate more predictably with updates, file associations, notifications, and hardware than a compatibility layer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Inventory your software before installation. Mark each program as native Linux, web-based, replaceable, or Windows-only. For Windows-only software, record the exact edition, plug-ins, file formats, fonts, macros, and peripherals it requires. “The application runs” is not enough if a business workflow depends on an add-in or a specialized driver.

What Windows App Support does and does not promise

Zorin’s optional Windows App Support uses Wine and can launch many .exe and .msi files. Zorin explicitly cautions that not all Windows applications will be fully compatible. Treat it as a per-application test, not a general Windows emulation guarantee. Test licensing, updates, printing, hardware acceleration, fonts, file exchange, and every critical feature before relying on it.

When a Windows program fails, the safe alternatives are a supported Linux application, a web version, a separate Windows installation, or a virtualized or remote Windows environment that meets your organization’s rules. Do not delete the old installation until the replacement workflow has been accepted.

Printers, scanners, and other peripherals

Zorin’s migration guidance recommends testing peripherals and piloting workflows. Apply that advice to both distributions. Connect each printer and scanner, verify duplex printing and scanning resolution, test cameras and microphones, wake the computer from sleep, attach external displays, and check any device that relies on vendor software.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Record the exact model numbers and the functions you need. Basic printing may work while scanning, status monitoring, color management, or firmware updates do not. A live session can reveal missing drivers or connectivity problems before a disk is changed, but a post-installation test is still necessary because a temporary session does not reproduce every update and permission state.

How to test safely before replacing Windows

1. Back up personal data

Copy documents, photographs, browser exports, password-manager data, email archives, application settings, and recovery keys to storage that is separate from the computer. Open several backed-up files on another device. Zorin recommends backing up important files before proceeding; the same precaution applies to Mint and to any partition change.

2. Make installation media

Zorin’s installer guide lists these USB capacities by edition:

Zorin edition USB capacity listed by the installer guide
Core or Lite 4 GB
Pro, Pro Lite, or Education 16 GB

Use a suitable USB drive you already own or obtain optional installation media. The capacity figures are for creating the installer; they are not a recommendation for the computer’s internal storage. Prepare Mint media according to Mint’s current installation guide and read the release notes for Mint 22.3.

3. Boot the live environment

Select the USB as the temporary boot device using your computer’s firmware boot menu. In Zorin, choose “Try Zorin OS.” For Mint, use the live environment provided by its installation media. Confirm that the keyboard, trackpad, network, sound, graphics, suspend behavior, and external devices work before touching the internal disk.

4. Test applications and files

Open representative documents and run the workflows recorded in your inventory. Test native applications, web services, and any Windows applications you intend to use through Wine. Pay attention to file compatibility, fonts, macros, plug-ins, and shared folders.

5. Choose a reversible installation path

Zorin documents a dual-boot option alongside the existing operating system. Dual boot gives you a fallback while you complete testing, but partitioning still carries risk and requires a verified backup. If you do not need both systems on the same disk, use a spare computer or separate drive for the pilot. Mint also publishes an installation guide; follow its current partitioning instructions rather than relying on generic steps written for an older release.

6. Update and retest after installation

After installing, apply the distribution’s available updates, reboot, and repeat the hardware and application checks. A device that worked in a live session can behave differently after drivers, firmware, permissions, or power-management settings change.

Common migration mistakes and how to avoid them

  • Choosing by screenshots alone: A Windows-looking layout does not prove that your workflow or hardware will work. Use both live testing and a real pilot.
  • Assuming every .exe is supported: Wine-based Windows App Support handles many files, not all applications. Test the exact program and version.
  • Ignoring peripherals: Printers and scanners often require more than basic USB detection. Test every function you depend on.
  • Installing without a verified backup: Partition changes and operating-system installations can make files inaccessible. Open backup copies before proceeding.
  • Treating minimum requirements as comfortable requirements: Mint’s 2 GB RAM and 20 GB disk figures are minimums. Its 4 GB RAM and 100 GB disk recommendations are more realistic starting points.
  • Assuming Zorin and Mint have directly comparable specifications: Mint publishes the figures above, while the information available here establishes Zorin’s 64-bit Intel/AMD support but not an equivalent complete minimum table.
  • Removing Windows too soon: Keep the original system through the pilot or use dual boot when you need an immediate fallback.
  • Forgetting edition differences: Zorin’s Windows 11 and Windows Classic layouts require Pro; Core is free. Mint’s Cinnamon, Xfce, and MATE editions serve different desktop and resource preferences.

A decision framework for Windows users

Your priority More suitable starting point Why
A named Windows 11 or Windows Classic layout Zorin Pro Those layouts are documented Pro features; verify that the paid edition is worth it to you.
A free, popular desktop Mint Cinnamon Cinnamon is Mint’s most popular edition and Mint is described as completely free.
Lower-resource desktop options Mint Xfce or Zorin Lite Mint describes Xfce as lighter on resources; Zorin Lite uses XFCE. Test performance and device support on your hardware.
Many Windows-only applications Neither should be chosen without a pilot Zorin can try many .exe and .msi files through Wine, but compatibility is not universal; Mint requires the same application-by-application investigation.
Risk-averse migration Either, using a live session and a fallback Zorin documents “Try Zorin OS” and dual boot; Mint provides installation guidance. Back up before partition changes.

Bottom line: which is easier?

For a Windows user who wants the most explicit visual bridge and is comfortable paying for a one-time edition, Zorin Pro is the conditional recommendation because it includes Windows 11 and Windows Classic layouts. For someone who wants a free installation, values Mint’s popular Cinnamon edition, and is willing to compare the desktops directly, Linux Mint 22.3 Cinnamon is the stronger value.

Neither choice can be declared universally easier from the available evidence: no independent comparative usability study or named ease-of-use statistic establishes a winner. Make the decision after three checks: the desktop feels natural, every essential application has an acceptable path, and your peripherals work. Back up first, test from USB, and keep Windows available until the replacement has survived your real workload.
