Neither Linux Mint nor Ubuntu is universally better. Choose Linux Mint 22.3 “Zena” if you want to select Cinnamon, MATE, or Xfce and prefer Mint’s desktop integration. Choose Ubuntu Desktop 26.04 LTS if you want its GNOME 50 workflow and a longer standard-support window. Mint 22.3 is supported through April 2029; Ubuntu 26.04 LTS is supported through April 2031. Your computer’s exact hardware, the applications you need, and the interface you prefer should decide the installation.
Linux Mint vs Ubuntu at a glance
Linux Mint and Ubuntu are closely related but deliver different desktop experiences. Mint 22.3 is built on the Ubuntu Noble package base, while Ubuntu Desktop 26.04 is the upstream distribution itself. That shared foundation does not make the installations interchangeable: each project chooses its own desktop, defaults, tools, release schedule, and integration decisions.
| Decision point | Linux Mint 22.3 “Zena” | Ubuntu Desktop 26.04 LTS |
|---|---|---|
| Default choices covered by the current release information | Cinnamon, MATE, and Xfce editions | GNOME 50 desktop; Ubuntu also publishes separate official flavors |
| Package base | Ubuntu Noble | Ubuntu’s own 26.04 LTS release |
| Standard support stated by the publisher | Through April 2029 | Through April 2031 |
| Published hardware figures | 2 GB RAM, 20 GB disk, and 1024×768 minimum figures; 4 GB RAM and 100 GB disk recommended for comfortable use | 2 GHz dual-core processor, 6 GB system memory, and 25 GB free storage |
| Best reason to select it | You want to choose a Mint desktop and its particular workflow | You want GNOME and the longer 26.04 LTS standard-support horizon |
The figures in the table are publisher-stated requirements for different releases, not a controlled speed comparison. They cannot establish that Mint is faster, that Ubuntu needs more resources in every situation, or that either system will support every device in your computer.

Linux Mint’s desktop editions
The Linux Mint release list includes Cinnamon, MATE, and Xfce editions for the 22.x line. These are not merely themes: they change the panel, menus, settings layout, window behavior, bundled utilities, and the amount of visual interface you use every day. Cinnamon is Mint’s best-known desktop choice; MATE and Xfce provide alternative workflows for people who prefer a different layout or a lighter-feeling environment. Look at screenshots or try each edition in a live session rather than relying on a claim that one is objectively easier.

Mint 22.3 “Zena” uses the Ubuntu Noble base and includes Linux kernel 6.14. Its release notes also describe updates to system-information and troubleshooting tools. The Mint release listing shows Mint 22, 22.1, 22.2, and 22.3 sharing the April 2029 support horizon, while older 21.x releases are listed through April 2027. Check the Linux Mint release list before downloading because release names and support dates change.
Ubuntu’s GNOME desktop
Ubuntu Desktop 26.04 uses GNOME 50 according to Ubuntu’s download information. GNOME organizes work around an overview of open windows and applications, a launcher or dock, and a search-driven application view. If you already like that arrangement, Ubuntu’s default installation gives you that workflow without selecting a different edition. Ubuntu also links to official flavors, so someone who wants Ubuntu’s base with another desktop can investigate those separately; this comparison is about the standard Ubuntu Desktop download.
The practical question is not “Which desktop is universally simpler?” It is “Which layout matches how you launch programs, switch windows, manage panels, and use settings?” A traditional menu-and-panel workflow may feel natural to one person, while another may prefer GNOME’s overview and search. Neither preference is a performance measurement.
Current release and support dates
Linux Mint 22.3 support
Linux Mint lists 22.3 “Zena” as an LTS release on Ubuntu Noble with support through April 2029. The release notes describe the same 2029 support endpoint and identify kernel 6.14. This date belongs to the 22.3 release line; it should not be treated as a permanent promise for every future Mint version.
Ubuntu 26.04 LTS support
Ubuntu’s release notes date Ubuntu 26.04 LTS to 23 April 2026 and state that standard support runs until April 2031. The Ubuntu download page describes five years of free security and maintenance updates for an LTS release. It also says Ubuntu Pro can extend coverage up to 15 years, while the release notes describe Expanded Security Maintenance for ten years with Ubuntu Pro. Those are optional, account- and service-dependent extensions, not part of the free standard-support period. If you want a system you can leave unchanged for several years, write the exact version and end date on your upgrade plan.

How much RAM and storage do they need?
Linux Mint’s published figures
The Linux Mint FAQ lists 2 GB of RAM, 20 GB of disk space, and a 1024×768 display resolution. It recommends 4 GB of RAM and 100 GB of storage for comfortable usage. These numbers are general Mint FAQ guidance, not a laboratory test of Mint 22.3 against Ubuntu 26.04. Read the figures as installation guidance: a computer that barely meets a minimum can still feel constrained once you open a browser, office documents, updates, and several background services.
Use the Linux Mint FAQ for the wording that applies to the release you are installing, especially if a later Mint version changes its requirements.
Ubuntu Desktop 26.04’s published figures
Ubuntu’s 26.04 Desktop page lists a 2 GHz dual-core processor or better, 6 GB of system memory, and 25 GB of free hard-drive space. Ubuntu’s release notes add that lower-specification systems may be installable and suggest considering an Ubuntu flavor in that situation. “Installable” does not mean equally comfortable for every workload: web conferencing, many browser tabs, photo work, and virtual machines can demand considerably more than the published baseline.
Ubuntu’s official figures are attached to Ubuntu Desktop 26.04. Do not combine them with Mint’s numbers to declare a winner. The releases use different wording, and no controlled test using identical hardware and workloads establishes a speed difference.
How to interpret the numbers
- Check the computer’s actual RAM, processor, storage capacity, and screen resolution rather than relying on its age or model name.
- Leave free storage for updates, personal files, caches, and recovery space; the installation minimum is not a sensible target for a full-time computer.
- Consider the workload: a few documents and light browsing place different demands on a system than large spreadsheets, development tools, video editing, or multiple monitors.
- For an older machine, compare Mint’s MATE or Xfce editions and Ubuntu’s documented flavor route by trying the interfaces on that hardware. This is a choice of desktop and configuration, not proof that one distribution is faster.
Linux Mint vs Ubuntu: which is better for a beginner?
The answer depends on what “beginner” means. If you are moving from a desktop arranged around a persistent panel, application menu, and familiar window controls, Mint’s Cinnamon or MATE edition may match that mental model. If you prefer a clean workspace, an activity overview, and searching for applications, Ubuntu’s GNOME desktop may be the better fit. These are interface choices, not evidence that one project is universally easier to learn.

Support expectations matter as much as the first hour of use. A beginner who wants to postpone a major upgrade can favor Ubuntu 26.04 LTS because its stated standard-support date is April 2031. Someone who specifically wants Mint’s tools and desktop editions can reasonably choose Mint 22.3 while noting its April 2029 endpoint. In either case, use the current release page when you install; tutorials written for older releases may show different settings or screens.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Before committing, write down three tasks you perform every day—such as connecting to Wi-Fi, joining a video meeting, printing, or editing a document—and test those tasks in the live environment. A desktop that looks attractive but makes a critical task awkward is the wrong choice for that user.
Which is better for an old laptop?
There is no evidence here that Mint is faster on every old laptop. The safe method is to compare the computer’s exact specifications with the published requirements, then test the editions you are considering. Mint offers MATE and Xfce alongside Cinnamon, giving you multiple desktop choices within the same project. Ubuntu’s 26.04 release notes say lower-specification systems may be installable and point readers toward an Ubuntu flavor. That is a reason to investigate an appropriate flavor, not a guarantee of a particular frame rate or battery life.
On an older laptop, pay special attention to the components that operating-system requirements do not summarize:
- Wi-Fi: Connect to your normal network and confirm that the connection remains usable after sleep and wake.
- Graphics: Check the native resolution, external displays, brightness controls, and video playback.
- Audio: Test speakers, headphone output, microphone input, and mute controls.
- Sleep and resume: Close the lid or suspend the live session, then wake it and verify that networking and the display return.
- Peripherals: Try the printer, webcam, Bluetooth devices, card reader, and any specialized input hardware you depend on.
These checks are a prudent way to reduce surprises; they are not results of a comparative hardware test. If an essential device fails in one live session, record the exact model and investigate that device before installing permanently.

Will Linux Mint or Ubuntu work on my computer?
Start with the exact model number and the applications you cannot replace. Published RAM, processor, disk, and display figures answer only whether a computer is in the broad installation range. They do not establish support for a particular wireless chipset, graphics adapter, audio codec, fingerprint reader, docking station, or printer.
A practical compatibility checklist
- Record the processor model, installed RAM, storage device and free space, graphics hardware, display resolution, Wi-Fi adapter, and any dock or external monitor.
- List the software you must use. For each item, identify a Linux version, a web version, or a replacement before you erase the existing system.
- Download the current ISO for the edition you want from the project’s official page. Use the version-specific support information rather than an old tutorial.
- Boot a live session when the computer and installer allow it. Test networking, graphics, audio, suspend, and peripherals using your normal accessories.
- Only after those checks, decide whether to install alongside an existing system, replace it, or test on a spare drive. Back up personal files before changing partitions.
A live session is an evaluation method, not a guarantee: behavior can differ after installation, updates, or proprietary hardware configuration. Keep the exact hardware details and any error messages if you need help later.
How to install and prepare the installer media
Ubuntu’s documented USB or DVD path
Ubuntu’s installation instructions cover downloading an ISO, creating bootable media with an image writer, and starting the computer from that USB flash drive or DVD. Follow the current instructions on Ubuntu Desktop’s download page because the screens and release options change.
- Download the Ubuntu Desktop ISO for the release you intend to support. Confirm that the page identifies Ubuntu 26.04 LTS if that is your choice.
- Use an image-writing tool to write the ISO to a USB flash drive. Writing the image normally erases that drive, so copy off anything it contains first.
- Insert the finished USB drive, restart the computer, and use its boot-selection method to start from the installer media.
- Choose the live-session option when available and run the compatibility checks listed above before changing the internal disk.
- When you are ready, start the installer, select the intended disk arrangement, create your user account, and let the installation finish before removing the media.
- Restart into the installed system, connect to the network, and apply the updates offered for that release.
A generic USB flash drive for the installer is optional. Ubuntu identifies USB or DVD as installer media; no particular capacity, speed class, or brand is established here. If you already have suitable media, buying another drive is unnecessary.
What this means for Mint
Mint’s release listing provides downloadable Cinnamon, MATE, and Xfce editions. Choose the edition first, then use the project’s current installation documentation for that ISO. Do not assume that every Ubuntu installer screen, option, or troubleshooting step is identical on Mint: the installation-media procedure described above is sourced specifically to Ubuntu’s instructions.

Which desktop workflow should you choose?
| If you value… | Start by examining… | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A conventional panel, menu, and desktop arrangement | Mint Cinnamon | It is Mint’s principal desktop edition and is designed around that style of interaction. |
| A different, potentially lighter desktop within Mint | Mint MATE or Xfce | Both are listed as supported 22.x editions, letting you compare workflows without leaving the Mint project. |
| An overview-and-search workflow | Ubuntu Desktop with GNOME 50 | GNOME is the standard desktop named for Ubuntu 26.04. |
| An Ubuntu base with another interface | An official Ubuntu flavor | Ubuntu links to separate flavors; evaluate the flavor’s own release and support details. |
Desktop choice also affects help instructions. A guide that says “open the panel menu” may assume Mint Cinnamon, while a guide that says “open the overview” may assume GNOME. When asking for support, include the distribution version and desktop edition so the instructions match your screen.
How software and support needs change the decision
List the applications and services that are non-negotiable before choosing either distribution. Web applications may reduce operating-system dependence, while specialist desktop software, hardware-control utilities, or organization-specific tools may require a supported Linux build or a different workflow. Neither the Mint-versus-Ubuntu relationship nor the published hardware tables proves that a particular application or peripheral will work on your machine.
For a personal laptop, also consider how often you want to make major changes. Mint 22.3’s support date is earlier, but its desktop selection may be exactly what you want. Ubuntu 26.04 LTS offers the longer stated standard-support window. If you choose based on support horizon, record the end date and review upgrade guidance well before it arrives; do not wait for the final week to discover that an application or device needs migration work.
A decision framework you can use before downloading
- Choose the interface. Watch or try Cinnamon, MATE, Xfce, and GNOME 50. Decide which way you want to open apps, arrange windows, and reach settings.
- Choose the support horizon. Compare Mint 22.3 through April 2029 with Ubuntu 26.04 LTS through April 2031. Treat any Ubuntu Pro extension as optional and verify its current terms.
- Check the computer. Compare the exact hardware with the publisher’s figures, leaving practical headroom for your workload.
- Test essential devices. Use a live session to check Wi-Fi, graphics, audio, sleep, displays, and peripherals.
- Check applications. Confirm that every work, study, accessibility, and entertainment requirement has a Linux or web solution.
- Plan installation media and backup. Prepare the ISO and bootable media, and copy personal files to a separate backup before altering the internal drive.
| Your priority | Most defensible starting point | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Mint’s Cinnamon, MATE, or Xfce choices | Linux Mint 22.3 | Support is stated through April 2029; verify device compatibility on the target computer. |
| GNOME 50 and the longest standard-support period in this comparison | Ubuntu Desktop 26.04 LTS | Standard support is stated through April 2031; optional Pro coverage is separate. |
| A low-specification computer | Try Mint MATE/Xfce and an appropriate Ubuntu flavor in a live session | No supplied evidence proves a universal speed winner. |
| Unusual hardware or critical peripherals | Whichever passes your live-session tests | Device-specific testing outweighs a general reputation. |
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Calling minimum requirements a performance ranking: The Mint and Ubuntu figures describe different releases and use different wording. Keep them separate.
- Ignoring the edition: “Mint” can mean Cinnamon, MATE, or Xfce; “Ubuntu” can mean standard GNOME Desktop or an official flavor. Name the edition when you ask for help.
- Confusing free support with optional extensions: Ubuntu’s April 2031 date is the standard 26.04 LTS endpoint. Ubuntu Pro extensions require their own eligibility and terms.
- Installing before testing hardware: A live session can reveal a missing Wi-Fi connection, display problem, or unusable peripheral before you repartition a disk.
- Using an old guide: Menus, kernels, installer choices, and support dates change. Match instructions to the release number shown on the download page.
- Forgetting backups: Installation and partition changes can destroy data. Keep a separate copy of files you cannot replace.
Which one should you install?
Install Linux Mint 22.3 “Zena” when its Cinnamon, MATE, or Xfce workflow is the deciding factor and your plan accepts support through April 2029. Install Ubuntu Desktop 26.04 LTS when GNOME 50 suits you or when the stated standard-support date through April 2031 better matches your maintenance schedule. For an older or unusual computer, let the live-session results and your required applications decide; do not substitute a generic “lighter” or “more compatible” claim for a device check.
Whichever you select, download the current release, test the hardware you actually use, back up your files, and record the version and support end date. That process produces a better result than choosing by reputation alone.
