No single Linux setting prevents local-root exploits or guarantees a virtual-machine escape is impossible. The defensible approach is layered: keep the kernel maintained, enforce strict memory permissions, reduce capabilities and system calls, restrict privileged interfaces, hide information useful to exploit writers, and apply workload policy. These controls make exploitation harder and limit what a compromised process can reach, while hypervisor, host-kernel, hardware, and patch security remain essential to VM containment.

What kernel hardening can—and cannot—protect

Linux’s kernel threat model assumes that a process without elevated capabilities must not be able to alter kernel configuration, memory, or state; grant itself capabilities it does not possess; or exhaust resources without bound. It also treats hardware behavior and isolation boundaries as assumptions. Kernel settings therefore reduce attack surface and constrain impact, but they do not prove that a vulnerability is absent.

For a local-root attack, the objective is to prevent an unprivileged process from reaching a kernel bug or from turning a limited foothold into broad control. For a VM escape, the relevant boundary usually includes the guest kernel, virtual devices, the hypervisor, the host kernel, CPU and IOMMU behavior, and patch status. Guest-only settings can improve the guest’s resistance to local exploitation; they cannot establish a probability of escape or guarantee that a vulnerable hypervisor will contain an attacker.

Start with a maintained kernel and a verified configuration

Outdated or end-of-life kernel branches fall outside the maintained-kernel threat model. Patch governance is therefore a prerequisite, not an optional final step. Track the kernel branch, distribution security updates, bootloader configuration, loadable modules, and the hypervisor or host release as one dependency chain.

Do not infer hardening from a distribution name. Exact defaults and available controls vary with kernel version, distribution, CPU architecture, boot chain, and hypervisor. Inspect the running system and the booted command line:

uname -r
cat /proc/cmdline
grep -E 'CONFIG_(STRICT_KERNEL_RWX|STRICT_MODULE_RWX|SECURITY_LOCKDOWN_LSM|MODULE_SIG_FORCE|USER_NS)' /boot/config-$(uname -r)

Some distributions expose the configuration through /proc/config.gz instead of a file under /boot. A missing option in one location does not prove that the feature is unavailable; verify how that distribution publishes its configuration.

Preserve strict kernel memory permissions

Strict code and data separation

CONFIG_STRICT_KERNEL_RWX and CONFIG_STRICT_MODULE_RWX are intended to ensure that executable code is not writable, data is not executable, and read-only data is neither writable nor executable. These permissions make common write-then-execute exploitation paths more difficult.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep these protections enabled unless a documented compatibility requirement makes an exception unavoidable. Treat every exception as an explicit risk decision with an owner, a reason, and a removal date. Check the running kernel’s configuration rather than assuming a vendor default.

Hardware execution and access barriers

On x86, SMEP helps prevent kernel execution of user-space pages and SMAP helps prevent inappropriate kernel access to user-space memory. On ARM, PXN and PAN provide related execution and access restrictions. Their availability and effective state depend on the processor, kernel, and boot path. A hardened profile should confirm that the platform supports the relevant protections and that the booted kernel has not disabled them.

Use kernel lockdown to protect the running kernel

The kernel_lockdown(7) manual describes lockdown as a defense against direct and indirect access to a running kernel image, including unauthorized modification and access to security or cryptographic data in kernel memory, while still permitting driver modules to be loaded under its rules.

Lockdown was added in Linux 5.4. It requires CONFIG_SECURITY_LOCKDOWN_LSM and an LSM initialization that includes lockdown. When active, the manual documents several important restrictions:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Only validly signed modules may be loaded.
  • Only validly signed binaries may be used with kexec.
  • Unencrypted hibernation is disallowed.
  • debugfs use is blocked.
  • Secure-Boot lockdown mode requires appropriate secure-boot IMA rules.

Check whether lockdown is active with cat /sys/kernel/security/lockdown. The output and available modes are kernel- and distribution-dependent. Secure Boot can select lockdown behavior, but a machine without Secure Boot may require an explicit boot or LSM configuration. Test recovery paths before enforcing it on systems that depend on out-of-tree drivers, crash-dump tooling, hibernation, or kernel-replacement workflows.

Modules, kexec, tracing, and diagnostics

Kernel self-protection guidance recommends preventing unprivileged module loading. For stronger profiles, disable module loading after boot with modules_disabled, or require signatures with CONFIG_MODULE_SIG_FORCE. Disabling modules is difficult to reverse without a reboot, so load every approved driver first and document the operational consequence.

Restrict debugfs, tracing, perf, crash-analysis interfaces, and similar diagnostics to trusted administrators. These facilities can expose addresses or data and may provide powerful operations. Lockdown blocks or limits several of them, but local permissions and service policy still matter. A production image should not leave broad diagnostic access available merely because it is convenient during development.

Reduce system-call reach with seccomp

Seccomp filtering lets a process specify a filter for incoming system calls. The Linux self-protection guidance summarizes the benefit as reducing the number of kernel entry points available to a running process. Fewer reachable calls generally mean a smaller kernel attack surface for that workload.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Build a workload-specific policy

  1. Document the service’s startup, steady-state, reload, logging, networking, and shutdown behavior.
  2. Capture the system calls required in each phase under representative tests, including error paths and optional features.
  3. Create an allowlist or tightly reviewed policy that denies calls outside that set. Prefer a policy generated and reviewed for this workload rather than copied from an unrelated service.
  4. Deploy in a reporting or audit mode where the platform supports it, inspect denials, then enforce the policy.
  5. Monitor denials after upgrades and configuration changes; a newly required call should trigger policy review, not an automatic blanket exception.

Seccomp is opt-in and is not a complete security policy. It does not by itself decide which files a process may read, which devices it may open, which credentials it may use, or what information it may infer. Pair it with capability dropping, filesystem and device restrictions, an LSM, and resource controls. A blanket profile reused across unrelated services can break legitimate startup behavior or create false confidence.

Constrain credentials and capabilities

Run each service with the least privilege it needs. Review inherited capabilities after service-manager, container, and namespace setup; dropping a capability in one layer does not help if another layer restores it.

Capability Why it deserves review Typical hardening decision
CAP_SYS_ADMIN Broad administrative authority spanning many kernel interfaces. Remove unless a narrowly documented operation requires it; prefer a more specific capability where possible.
CAP_SYS_MODULE Controls kernel-module loading and therefore code introduced into the kernel. Drop for application workloads; combine with signed-module or module-disabled policy.
CAP_SYS_RAWIO Permits sensitive raw I/O operations that can cross normal device and memory boundaries. Keep out of ordinary services and containers.
CAP_NET_ADMIN Controls network configuration and other privileged networking operations. Grant only to a dedicated networking component, not to general application code.
CAP_SYS_PTRACE Allows observation and control of other users’ process activity. Restrict to approved debuggers and monitoring agents; remove from production application identities.

Capabilities are only one boundary. A process with a small capability set may still exploit a vulnerable syscall, device, filesystem, or namespace interface, so evaluate the complete execution profile.

Decide deliberately whether unprivileged user namespaces are needed

With CONFIG_USER_NS enabled, an unprivileged user can create a user namespace in which it has capabilities. Kernel checks restrict what those namespaced capabilities can affect in the initial namespace; for example, they do not permit changing global time, loading modules, or mounting block devices there. Namespaces therefore provide useful isolation, but they also expose additional code paths and namespaced privileged interfaces.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the workload does not need them

Disable or tightly restrict unprivileged namespace creation using the controls your distribution provides. Some distributions expose a namespace-related sysctl, while others rely on kernel configuration or service policy; the exact knob and default are not universal. Verify the effective behavior on the target kernel instead of applying a setting copied from another distribution.

If the workload does need them

  • Drop capabilities inside the namespace and prevent capability regain across exec transitions.
  • Apply a seccomp policy that covers namespace, mount, and device-related calls.
  • Restrict mount propagation, writable paths, device nodes, and access to host filesystems.
  • Use an LSM policy to enforce logical behavior and information-flow constraints.
  • Audit interfaces that translate namespaced operations into actions in the initial namespace.

Disabling user namespaces can break legitimate sandboxing, rootless workloads, and desktop applications. Make the decision from an inventory of required workloads, not from a generic hardening checklist.

Add filesystem policy with Landlock or another LSM

Landlock provides unprivileged, per-application filesystem access rules. It is useful when an application needs only a narrow portion of the file hierarchy: for example, a compiler might need a project directory and a cache, but not arbitrary host files.

Compose Landlock with seccomp or another LSM. Landlock does not replace kernel patching, capability minimization, device policy, or hypervisor isolation. Test file creation, renaming, temporary files, sockets, and upgrade paths; an apparently harmless path restriction can fail only during an uncommon recovery or rotation operation.

Preserve address-hiding and information-flow controls

Exposed kernel addresses and memory contents help attackers turn a vulnerability into a reliable exploit. Restrict sensitive procfs and debugfs facilities, avoid exposing raw addresses to untrusted users, and retain address-hiding defaults.

Kernel address-space layout randomization (KASLR) randomizes the kernel base address on each boot. It raises the difficulty of attacks that depend on fixed addresses, but it does not repair a vulnerability and cannot compensate for an address leak or a reliable information-disclosure primitive. Check the boot command line for parameters such as nokaslr and confirm the architecture’s documented behavior. Ubuntu’s security documentation notes that Ubuntu 20.04 LTS enabled lockdown in integrity mode; other releases and distributions may differ.

What these settings mean for VM-escape risk

Guest hardening reduces the chance that an attacker who reaches the guest kernel or a guest service can escalate further inside that guest. Host hardening protects the kernel that runs the hypervisor and its management services. Neither layer substitutes for the other.

  • Patch the hypervisor, host kernel, guest kernels, virtual firmware, and emulated or paravirtualized devices on their own maintenance schedules.
  • Minimize the virtual hardware presented to each guest; remove unused device emulation and management channels.
  • Separate tenant or trust domains with the hypervisor’s strongest supported isolation settings.
  • Use CPU and IOMMU protections appropriate to the platform, and verify that firmware and boot configuration enable them.
  • Restrict host management APIs, console access, migration endpoints, and shared folders to trusted administrators.
  • Assume that a kernel-only checklist cannot establish a numeric VM-escape probability.

The kernel threat model assumes underlying hardware behaves according to specification and treats hardware and isolation assumptions as boundaries. A VM-escape assessment must therefore include the hypervisor vendor’s advisories, host configuration, device model, and incident-recovery plan.

A practical implementation sequence

  1. Define the boundary. Identify whether the primary concern is an unprivileged host user, a container breakout, a guest compromise, or a hostile tenant. Record which assets must remain outside that boundary.
  2. Inventory the booted system. Record kernel version, architecture, boot parameters, enabled modules, lockdown state, Secure Boot state, and hypervisor or host version.
  3. Patch first. Apply supported kernel and hypervisor security updates, reboot where required, and verify that the intended kernel actually booted.
  4. Verify memory protections. Confirm strict kernel and module RWX settings and available hardware barriers; investigate any disabled feature before proceeding.
  5. Restrict privileged interfaces. Enforce lockdown where the trust and recovery model support it, require signed modules or disable module loading, and limit debugfs, tracing, perf, and crash tooling.
  6. Minimize credentials. Remove unnecessary capabilities, especially broad administrative, module, raw-I/O, networking, and ptrace powers.
  7. Review namespaces and devices. Disable unneeded unprivileged user namespaces; otherwise pair them with mount, device, capability, seccomp, and LSM controls.
  8. Write workload policy. Build and test a seccomp allowlist and, where useful, Landlock or another LSM policy for each service.
  9. Validate information exposure. Check procfs, debugfs, logs, crash reports, and monitoring output for kernel addresses or sensitive memory contents.
  10. Exercise recovery. Test signed-boot failures, driver loading, kernel rollback, crash capture, upgrades, and emergency console access before enforcing the strictest profile.

Common failure modes and fixes

“Lockdown is enabled, so VM escape is solved.”

Lockdown protects the running kernel image and sensitive kernel data; it does not harden a vulnerable hypervisor or virtual device. Extend the review to the host, hypervisor, firmware, IOMMU, and management plane.

“Seccomp is enough.”

Seccomp limits system calls but does not define credentials, files, devices, or information flow. Add capability, filesystem, device, namespace, and LSM controls.

“Disabling user namespaces broke applications.”

Restore only the narrowly required path, then contain it with capability dropping, mount and device restrictions, seccomp, and LSM policy. Treat the exception as an architectural decision.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“A copied syscall profile causes outages.”

Rebuild the policy from the service’s actual startup and runtime traces, include upgrade and recovery paths, and monitor denials after every major change.

“KASLR is present, but exploitation still works.”

KASLR is probabilistic address randomization, not a vulnerability fix. Investigate information leaks, exposed diagnostic interfaces, and the underlying kernel flaw while keeping patching as the primary remediation.
