Bazzite, Nobara, CachyOS, and ChimeraOS are credible SteamOS alternatives, but none is proven to be universally faster or better for gaming. The right choice depends on whether you want a flexible desktop or handheld setup, gaming and creator tools ready to use, performance-oriented options, or a PC that starts in a couch-friendly interface.

Are these Linux distros actually better than SteamOS?

“Better” depends on the device and the experience you want. These projects offer different interfaces, bundled tools, hardware targets, and update approaches; their feature descriptions do not establish a general gaming-performance advantage over SteamOS. No matched-hardware comparison establishes an FPS ranking across these four distros and SteamOS.

Linux game compatibility also varies by individual game and its requirements. Before switching, check whether the games you play work on Linux, including any anti-cheat requirements, and verify compatibility for your specific GPU, handheld, Wi-Fi, controller, and display setup.

Nobara: gaming and creator tools on a desktop

Nobara suits players who want a desktop-oriented system with gaming utilities and creator software available. Its user guide lists Steam, Lutris, Gamescope, GameMode, MangoHud, GOverlay, Proton installation tooling, and OBS Studio.

Those are project claims about design and options, not evidence that games run faster than on SteamOS. Choose it for its approach and configuration flexibility, not on the assumption of a proven FPS gain.

ChimeraOS: a couch-first gaming PC

ChimeraOS is the most focused option here for a living-room PC: it is designed to boot into Steam Big Picture, with game management through a web app, background updates, and controller compatibility. The project describes support for games and platforms including Steam, Epic Games Store, and GOG. Its stated focus is a gaming appliance, rather than a general-purpose desktop.

  • Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
  • Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
  • Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
  • The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.

The project sums up its positioning this way: “If you want Steam in your living room, you want ChimeraOS.” Treat that as ChimeraOS’s own description, not an independent comparison.

How to choose the right distro

  1. Start with the device. For a mix of desktop, handheld, or HTPC use, consider Bazzite. For a living-room PC, consider ChimeraOS. For a desktop with gaming and streaming tools, consider Nobara. For performance-oriented options and rolling releases, consider CachyOS.
  2. Decide how you want to launch games. Choose a conventional desktop workflow or a console-style interface. ChimeraOS is designed to launch into Steam Big Picture; Bazzite documents a SteamOS-like gaming mode.
  3. Check your hardware and peripherals. Confirm support for your GPU, handheld, Wi-Fi adapter, controller, and display using the project’s current documentation. A distro’s general feature list cannot guarantee compatibility with a particular configuration.
  4. Consider maintenance and setup. Decide whether you want gaming tools assembled for you, a system with atomic updates and rollback options, or the choices and maintenance expectations of a rolling release.
  5. Verify the games you care about. Check each game’s Linux compatibility and anti-cheat requirements before moving your main gaming setup. Do not assume that support for a store or launcher guarantees every title will run.

What the available comparisons do—and do not—show

The projects’ official descriptions support comparing features and intended use cases. They do not provide a controlled performance comparison among Bazzite, Nobara, CachyOS, ChimeraOS, and SteamOS. A fair FPS comparison would need matched hardware, game versions, drivers, settings, and test methods. Without that evidence, it is more accurate to choose by fit than to call any of these distros categorically faster.
