Use locate when you need a quick, approximate filename lookup and the system’s filename database is fresh enough. Use find when you need a current search of a particular directory tree, filters such as file size, or an operation on the matching paths. The essential difference is an indexed database search versus a live traversal of the hierarchy you specify.

At a glance: choose by the job

Question Use find Use locate
What does it search? Traverses the directory hierarchy supplied to the command at run time. Scans one or more prebuilt filename databases.
How current are results? It examines the selected tree when you run it, subject to permissions and traversal behavior. Results reflect the last database update and may omit new files or retain paths that changed.
What can it match? Rich expressions can combine a name with attributes such as size. Matches patterns against stored pathnames.
Best use A known subtree, attribute-based searches, verification, and workflows that act on files. Fast discovery by filename when indexed coverage is adequate.
Main limitation Traversal can take longer as the selected tree and expression become larger or more complex. Database coverage, freshness, and update frequency depend on local configuration.

The GNU Findutils project describes locate as scanning filename databases and displaying matching entries. Its documentation also presents it as very fast when the file existed at the most recent database update. See the official project description at GNU Findutils.

How the two commands search

find: a live walk through a hierarchy

find starts at one or more paths that you provide and searches the directory hierarchy below them. Because the traversal happens when the command runs, the command can inspect the tree as it exists at that moment rather than relying on a saved list of names.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The starting path is therefore part of the result. A search rooted at /home/alex cannot return a file that is outside that hierarchy. Choosing a narrow, relevant root reduces unnecessary traversal and makes a command easier to review before you use it in a script or maintenance task.

This scope is also a useful correctness boundary. If you know the file must be somewhere in one project, searching that project tells readers exactly what was examined. A command beginning at a broad root may produce more output and make it harder to notice an unintended match. The live nature of find does not mean it sees files outside the roots you supplied.

locate: a search of prebuilt filename databases

locate does not normally walk the directories itself. It searches one or more databases created by the updatedb process. The database stores pathnames that were visible when it was built, so the command can answer a name query without visiting every directory during your search.

This design explains both its speed and its limitation: a result is evidence that a matching pathname was recorded, not proof that the same file still exists. Conversely, a file created after the last update may be absent even though it is present on disk.

The database is therefore part of the command’s effective search scope. A path can exist on a mounted filesystem yet be absent from the database, while a deleted path can remain listed until a later update. “Search with locate” means “search the configured index,” not “inspect every current directory now.”

When locate is the better first try

You remember the name, or part of it

For a quick name-based lookup, start with a pattern such as:

locate 'report.pdf'

This is useful when you do not know which directory contains the file and only need candidate paths. The command searches the databases available to that installation, not an automatically guaranteed, complete view of every mounted filesystem.

It is especially convenient for an exploratory question: perhaps you remember a report’s name but not whether it is under your home directory, a source tree, or another indexed location. The output can reveal likely parent directories, after which you can switch to a narrowly scoped live search.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You need speed more than immediate certainty

An indexed query avoids a fresh traversal of the tree, so it is often the quickest way to discover likely locations. Do not attach a universal speed ratio to the commands: actual performance depends on database availability, the size of the indexed data, the query, storage, and the hierarchy that a find command would have to traverse.

“Fast” describes the lookup method, not a promise that every query on every machine will finish in a particular time. A large or unavailable database, storage conditions, and the implementation installed on the machine all affect the experience. The documented advantage is qualitative: avoiding a live walk can make a name lookup very fast when the relevant file was present at the last update.

The database is known to be current enough

If the relevant directories are included in the local database and an update has run since the file was created or moved, locate can save time. The schedule is a system-administration choice; a nightly refresh is not a guarantee for every Linux machine.

For a non-consequential lookup, an approximate answer may be all you need. For a script, audit, backup, or cleanup operation, treat the output as an input that requires confirmation rather than as a current inventory.

When find is the right command

You need a current answer in a chosen tree

Use find when the distinction between an old pathname and the filesystem’s current state matters. For example:

find /home/alex -name '*.pdf' -print

This searches below /home/alex at command time and prints matching paths. The quoted pattern is important: the quotes prevent the shell from expanding *.pdf before find receives it.

The command is also a direct way to test a hypothesis about location. If you expect a file beneath one directory, make that directory the root and interpret an empty result as “no matching path was found in this searched hierarchy,” not as proof that the file cannot exist elsewhere.

You need more than a filename pattern

find expressions can combine tests. The GNU documentation demonstrates adding a size condition:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
find /usr/src -name '*.c' -size +100k -print

Here, the command selects paths whose names match the pattern and whose files satisfy the specified size test. This kind of compound selection is the practical dividing line between a simple indexed name lookup and an attribute-aware search.

The same principle applies whenever the filename alone is insufficient. Start with the smallest useful root, establish the basic name match, and then add the additional expression tests required by the task. Keeping the expression readable makes it easier to inspect before using its output elsewhere.

You intend to act on matching paths

A find expression can be used as the selection stage of a workflow that later performs an action on the results. Because an action can change files, begin with a command that only prints the matches. Inspect the output, narrow the starting path or expression if necessary, and add an action only after the selection is demonstrably correct.

This is not a claim that find automatically makes file operations safe. It gives you an explicit root and expression that you can review. The safety comes from validating that selection before the operation, especially when the operation changes or removes files.

Freshness, coverage, and why locate can surprise you

A new file is missing

If locate returns nothing for a file you just created, the database may not have been rebuilt since that creation. Run a targeted find command in the directory where you expect the file; that checks the live hierarchy instead of waiting for the next database update.

Also check the name you supplied. An empty indexed result can reflect a spelling difference, a different extension, an excluded directory, or a database that was never configured to include that filesystem. A live search of the expected parent helps separate these possibilities.

An old path still appears

A database can retain a pathname after a file has been moved or deleted. Treat the entry as a candidate and verify it before opening, copying, modifying, or deleting anything. A live check with find in the relevant parent tree, or a direct check of the displayed path, establishes whether the path currently exists.

A directory is not represented

Database contents are determined by how updatedb is configured and run. Administrators can choose what is indexed, and systems can have different database locations, exclusion rules, and refresh schedules. GNU documentation does not define one setting that applies to every Linux distribution, so inspect your system’s installed implementation and administrative configuration when coverage matters.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not assume that a command named locate uses the same database path or inclusion policy on every host. Coverage is a local configuration question, not a universal property of the command name.

Several machines behave differently

Two Linux systems can both provide a command named locate while using different implementations or database arrangements. Before relying on a script or operational procedure, confirm which implementation is installed, which database it reads, what directories are included, and when updates occur on that machine.

This matters in mixed environments such as a workstation, a server, and a container host. A successful lookup on one system does not establish that the same path is indexed on another. If the procedure must be portable, make the freshness and coverage assumptions explicit and retain a live find fallback.

Shell quoting: the small detail that changes a search

In a command such as:

find /usr/src -name '*.c' -print

the single quotes protect the wildcard from the shell. Without quoting, the shell may expand *.c against names in the current working directory before find starts. In that case, find may receive a list of already-expanded names rather than the pattern you intended to test throughout /usr/src.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The same principle applies to other wildcard patterns used as find expressions: pass the pattern to find unchanged, and let its own matching logic evaluate it against each pathname. Quoting is therefore part of the search’s meaning, not merely a formatting preference.

A practical decision process

  1. Clarify the question. If you are asking “Where might a file with this name be?” and an approximate answer is acceptable, begin with locate. If you need to know what exists now, continue with find.
  2. Choose the scope. For find, select the smallest directory hierarchy that can contain the file. This improves clarity and avoids traversing unrelated trees.
  3. Choose the tests. Use locate for pathname patterns. Use find when combining a name with size or another supported expression.
  4. Quote patterns. Put wildcard patterns such as *.c in quotes so the shell does not expand them first.
  5. Print before acting. If the eventual task will modify or remove files, first run a print-only find command and inspect every match.
  6. Verify indexed hits. When a locate result drives a consequential operation, confirm that the path still exists and is the intended object.
  7. Check local assumptions. If coverage or repeatability matters, identify the installed locate implementation, its database, included directories, and refresh behavior.

Examples by common task

Find PDFs under one home directory

find /home/alex -name '*.pdf' -print

Use this when the directory is known and the answer must reflect the current contents of that tree.

Find large C source files in a source tree

find /usr/src -name '*.c' -size +100k -print

This illustrates why find is preferable when a filename condition alone is insufficient.

Look up a remembered report name quickly

locate 'report.pdf'

Use the output as a list of possible paths. If the file was recently created, renamed, or removed, verify the result with a live check.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Start broad, then confirm narrowly

A useful two-stage workflow is to run locate to discover likely directories, then run find from the relevant directory with the exact name or additional conditions. This combines indexed discovery with a current, scoped confirmation without treating stale database entries as authoritative.

This workflow is often more efficient than beginning with an unnecessarily broad live traversal when you genuinely do not know where to start. Once a likely root is known, the second command supplies the freshness and filtering that the index cannot guarantee.

Failure modes and fixes

locate prints no results, but you know the file exists

  • Search the expected parent directory with find to distinguish a stale database from a wrong filename or location.
  • Check whether the directory is included in the database used by your installation.
  • Determine when updatedb last refreshed that database and whether the update process is enabled.
  • Try the remembered pathname or filename carefully; a changed extension or spelling can produce the same empty output.

locate prints paths that no longer work

  • Assume the entry may be stale until verified.
  • Check the displayed path directly or search its parent tree with find.
  • Do not feed unverified output into a destructive command.
  • Remember that a move, deletion, or database refresh boundary can explain the mismatch without indicating a problem with the query itself.

find returns nothing

  • Confirm that the starting path is the directory tree containing the file.
  • Check the name pattern and preserve wildcard quoting.
  • Review whether permissions or traversal behavior prevent access to part of the hierarchy.
  • Remove extra tests temporarily, confirm the basic name match, then add conditions back one at a time.
  • Do not infer that the file is absent from the entire machine merely because it is absent from the selected root.

The search is taking too long

  • Narrow the starting directory instead of searching an unnecessarily large hierarchy.
  • Use locate for an initial filename discovery when an indexed, approximate answer is acceptable.
  • Keep find when freshness, filtering, or a later action is the requirement; speed alone is not a reason to accept stale results.
  • Do not rely on an invented fixed speed ratio: the actual cost depends on the tree, database, storage, query, and local configuration.

Safety when results will change files

The commands answer different search questions, but neither automatically makes a later file operation safe. A database result can be stale, and a live traversal can still select more paths than intended if the root or expression is too broad.

  1. Use a narrow find root whenever possible.
  2. Run a print-only expression and read the complete output.
  3. Check that names, directories, and attributes match the intended scope.
  4. Verify any path first returned by locate, especially if the file may have changed since indexing.
  5. Only then attach the operation that changes the matching paths.

This staged approach is practical command hygiene: it follows from the difference between selecting paths and acting on them, rather than from a claim that either utility universally guarantees safe file changes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What “search the whole filesystem” really means

Neither command should be described with an unconditional promise to search every file on every Linux system. With find, the hierarchy is exactly the path or paths supplied, and traversal can be limited by permissions or filesystem behavior. With locate, the universe is the set of pathnames present in its configured databases. Indexed directories, excluded paths, mounted filesystems, database permissions, and refresh policy are system-specific.

If complete coverage is a requirement, identify the relevant roots and configuration first, then use a live find search over the roots you are authorized to inspect. If the requirement is simply to discover a likely pathname quickly, locate can be an efficient first pass followed by verification.

Frequently asked questions

Why does locate not find a new file?

The filename database may not have been updated since the file was created. Search the expected directory with find for a current answer, then check the local updatedb schedule and coverage if the issue persists.

Does locate search the whole filesystem?

No unconditional guarantee applies. It searches the pathnames present in its configured databases. Included directories, exclusions, mounted filesystems, database permissions, and refresh policy vary by system.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I search by file name in Linux?

Use find with a selected root when you need a live, scoped search, for example find /home/alex -name '*.pdf' -print. Use locate 'report.pdf' when a quick indexed lookup is sufficient.

Which command is more accurate?

find reflects the selected hierarchy at run time, subject to permissions and traversal behavior. locate reflects its last database update, so its entries can be missing or stale. Verify locate results when accuracy matters.

Which command is faster?

locate can be very fast because it searches a prebuilt index instead of walking the tree for each query. There is no universal speed ratio; actual performance depends on local database and filesystem conditions. Narrowing a find root can also reduce traversal work.

Can I use locate to select files for deletion?

Do not treat unverified indexed output as authoritative for a destructive operation. Confirm each intended path with a current check, and prefer a narrow, print-only find selection that you inspect before adding an action.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why should wildcard patterns be quoted with find?

Quotes keep the shell from expanding the wildcard in the current working directory. They allow find to receive and evaluate the pattern against paths throughout the hierarchy you selected.

Will every Linux distribution configure locate the same way?

No. Implementations, database locations, indexed directories, exclusions, and refresh schedules can differ. Check the command and administrative configuration on the machine where the result matters.

The short answer

Try locate for a fast filename lookup when its database is current enough. Choose find for a current search of a chosen directory tree, conditions beyond a name, or any workflow that must deliberately act on matching paths. When correctness matters, verify indexed results and check how your system builds and refreshes its locate database.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does `locate` not find a new file?
