For a small Linux server fleet, build a shortlist around your operating model and required response features—not a claimed “best” product. Wazuh is a self-managed, open-source platform with endpoint agents and central components; Microsoft Defender for Endpoint documents Linux behavioral detection, investigation, and response capabilities with several onboarding routes. Microsoft’s supported-EDR list supplies additional candidates, but it is not a feature or performance ranking.

Before choosing, check each vendor’s current support matrix for the exact Linux distribution, release, architecture, kernel requirements, and installation method you will use. Then compare coverage, management, rollout effort, resource use in your workload, and total licensing and operating cost.

What should you compare before choosing?

“Linux support” is not a sufficient compatibility check. Support can vary by distribution release, CPU architecture, kernel, agent version, and installation route. Confirm those details in the current vendor documentation before piloting or deploying.

  • Platform fit: Does the vendor support every server’s distribution, version, and architecture, and does it support your intended installation method?
  • Protection and detection: Which prevention, behavioral detection, malware, and vulnerability functions are documented for Linux specifically?
  • Investigation and response: Can your team inspect alerts and device activity, hunt for indicators, isolate a host, or take other response actions?
  • Management and integration: Does the product fit your existing security stack, and can you operate it centrally?
  • Deployment and updates: Can onboarding and agent maintenance be automated using tools your team already runs?
  • Resource impact: What does the agent consume on your own server roles and workloads? Treat vendor estimates as estimates, not comparable benchmarks.
  • Operating model and cost: Who hosts and maintains the management components, and what do server licensing, endpoint counts, support, and operations cost under the terms you actually need?

The documented capabilities below help identify candidates, but they do not establish equal Linux feature depth or independent detection efficacy. The available sources also do not provide comparable prices or endpoint minimums.

How does Wazuh fit a small fleet?

Wazuh describes its platform as free and open source under GPLv2 and Apache License 2.0. Its self-managed architecture comprises an agent, server, indexer, and dashboard; Wazuh also offers Wazuh Cloud as a SaaS alternative. The endpoint agent sends data to the Wazuh server over an encrypted, authenticated channel. Wazuh’s installation guide outlines its components and deployment options.

Documented agent functions

Wazuh lists log collection, file integrity monitoring, security configuration assessment, system inventory, malware detection, active response, container security, and cloud security among the agent’s functions. These are vendor-described capabilities; they are not a head-to-head measure of how well Wazuh detects threats compared with other products. See the Wazuh agent installation guide.

What self-management entails

With a self-managed deployment, the organization operates the central platform components as well as deploying and maintaining endpoint agents. Wazuh says its server processes agent data with decoders and rules and can analyze data from hundreds or thousands of agents, with horizontal scaling through clustering. Those are architectural statements from Wazuh, not independent capacity or performance benchmarks. Wazuh’s component guide describes the design.

For larger deployments, Wazuh suggests automation tools such as Puppet, Chef, SCCM, or Ansible. It reports an average agent RAM use of 35 MB; that is Wazuh’s own estimate, not an independently measured result, and actual use should be checked on representative servers. Wazuh’s agent guide contains the resource statement and automation guidance.

What does Microsoft Defender for Endpoint document for Linux?

Microsoft describes Defender for Endpoint on Linux for on-premises, cloud, and hybrid server workloads. Its documented capabilities include next-generation protection, behavioral EDR, vulnerability management, alert correlation, device timelines, advanced hunting, Live Response, file-indicator controls, and device isolation. Microsoft says the Linux sensor is eBPF-based and does not use kernel modules; that is the vendor’s description, not comparative performance evidence. Check Microsoft’s Linux product documentation for current capabilities and prerequisites.

Deployment choices

Microsoft documents onboarding through scripts, Defender for Cloud, configuration-management tools including Ansible, Chef, and Puppet, golden images, and manual deployment. Its server onboarding guidance also lists SaltStack and recommends running a detection test after onboarding. Verify prerequisites for your exact distribution and architecture before selecting a method. See Microsoft’s server onboarding guidance.

Which other Linux EDR products belong on a shortlist?

Microsoft’s supported endpoint detection and response solutions page names CrowdStrike Falcon, Trellix, Symantec, Sophos, SentinelOne Singularity, and Cortex XDR as Linux-compatible options, alongside Microsoft Defender for Endpoint. Microsoft specifically conditions Cortex XDR Linux support on installation through a package manager.

This is a compatibility list in Microsoft’s cloud documentation—not an endorsement or a comparison of product features, licensing, or performance. For each candidate, verify its own current Linux support matrix and confirm which features and response actions apply to your distributions and plan.

How should a small team evaluate candidates?

  1. Inventory the fleet. Record each server’s distribution and release, architecture, kernel constraints, workload role, and management method. Mark any systems that cannot be changed during rollout.
  2. Reject unsupported combinations. Check the vendor’s current prerequisites against every inventory entry, including installation-method restrictions. Do not infer support for one release or architecture from a general Linux claim.
  3. Map required actions to documented Linux features. Decide whether you need behavioral detection, vulnerability management, file integrity monitoring, hunting, live investigation, isolation, or active response. Confirm each function for the Linux edition and plan, not just the overall product.
  4. Choose a representative pilot. Include server roles and workloads likely to reveal compatibility or resource issues. Validate alert visibility, response workflow, update behavior, and agent impact in your environment; vendor descriptions are not substitutes for this test.
  5. Plan central operations. For self-managed platforms, account for hosting, availability, upgrades, storage, and staff time. For vendor-managed routes, verify what the service operates and what remains your responsibility.
  6. Compare full cost only after scope is clear. Obtain current terms for server licensing, endpoint counts, minimums, support, and any management infrastructure. No comparable pricing basis is established by the sources cited here.
  7. Automate carefully. Use a supported deployment route and test onboarding and upgrades before broad rollout. For Defender for Endpoint, Microsoft recommends a detection test after onboarding.

What the available evidence can—and cannot—tell you

The official documentation establishes that Wazuh offers a self-managed open-source architecture and describes its agent functions, while Microsoft documents a range of Defender for Endpoint capabilities and deployment methods for Linux. Microsoft’s compatibility page can add commercial products to an initial candidate list.

Those facts do not identify a universal winner. The sources do not provide an independent comparative detection test, comparable resource measurements, or a like-for-like pricing analysis. Make the decision against your fleet’s support requirements, required Linux capabilities, operations capacity, pilot results, and current vendor terms.
