“Distro” is informal shorthand for “distribution.” A Linux distro is a collection of software distributed as a complete, usable system: it includes the Linux kernel plus the other components and tools people need to run the system.
What does “distro” mean?
It means “distribution.” In software, a distribution is a set of components packaged and delivered together. Ubuntu’s project glossary defines a software distribution as software components distributed as a whole, and calls a Linux distribution a complete operating system based on the Linux kernel, with essential system components, applications, and package-management tools. So the name refers to how the system is assembled and delivered—not to a different kind of Linux kernel. The Linux kernel project explains that someone seeking a complete Linux system wants a “distribution of Linux”: the kernel is one component of the system users install and use. “Linux” can refer narrowly to the kernel, or casually to the complete system built around it. Saying “Linux distribution” makes the distinction clearer: the kernel is the core, while the distribution packages it with the surrounding software that makes a working system.

There is also a naming debate. The GNU Project uses “GNU/Linux” for systems that combine GNU software with the Linux kernel, emphasizing GNU’s contribution. That is the GNU Project’s naming position; “Linux” and “Linux distro” remain common terms. GNU Project: Linux and GNU.
Why are there different Linux distros?
Because a distribution is an assembled software collection, its maintainers can select and organize components for different needs. The kernel project describes distributions as either general-purpose or optimized for specific uses. That flexibility is part of what “distribution” describes: the kernel may be shared, while the surrounding software and choices differ.
Does “distribution” always mean the whole operating system?
Not in every context. In general Linux usage, a distribution means a complete system based on the Linux kernel. Debian documentation also uses “Debian distribution” to mean a particular Debian release or suite, such as stable, testing, or unstable. The intended meaning depends on whether the discussion is about Linux systems generally or Debian’s release organization. Debian wiki: Debian Systems Administration for non-Debian SysAdmins.
Did someone coin “distro” at a specific time?
The cited project documentation establishes that “distro” is shorthand for “distribution,” but it does not identify who first shortened the word or when the term first appeared in Linux usage. There is no substantiated first-use date to give here.
