Linux does not have one universal list of accounts. A fresh installation normally includes root, service identities created by installed packages, and one or more human accounts; the exact names, numeric ranges, shells, and groups depend on the distribution and its account sources. The safe way to administer them is to distinguish numeric UID/GID ownership from displayed names, query the Name Service Switch (NSS), and investigate what an account owns or runs before changing it.

What a Linux user account actually is

A Linux account is an identity represented by a numeric user ID (UID), a primary group ID (GID), account metadata, and authentication or login policy. The kernel checks UIDs and GIDs when it evaluates file permissions and process credentials; names such as root or www-data are human-readable mappings supplied by an account database.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

On a simple host, those mappings are stored in local files. On a server using LDAP, NIS, systemd’s dynamic users, or another NSS module, the answer can come from several sources. Consequently, a name shown by ps, ls -l, or getent is not proof that a literal line exists in /etc/passwd.

How to read /etc/passwd

The Linux man-pages passwd(5) manual describes /etc/passwd as the text file that describes user login accounts. Each record has seven colon-separated fields:

Position Field Meaning
1 Login name The account’s name, such as root or a service name.
2 Password field A password marker or value used by the system’s authentication setup. It is commonly not the actual password when shadow passwords are enabled.
3 UID The numeric identity used by the kernel.
4 GID The account’s primary group ID.
5 GECOS Informational data, often a person’s name, office, or contact details; it does not grant privileges.
6 Home directory The directory assigned as HOME for a login session.
7 Login shell The program started for an interactive login, for example /bin/bash or a deliberate non-login shell.

A shell path that does not exist prevents login through login(1). A password field containing an asterisk blocks that login path, but it does not stop every possible non-login execution path, such as a service, a scheduled job, or an administrator invoking a command directly.

getent passwd
getent passwd root
awk -F: '{print $1, $3, $4, $6, $7}' /etc/passwd

/etc/passwd is intentionally readable so programs can map UIDs to names. Its write access should be restricted to the superuser and account-management tools. Do not edit it casually while services are running.

How to read /etc/group

The group(5) manual defines /etc/group as the file that defines groups on the system. Its format is group_name:password:GID:user_list:

Field Purpose
Group name The label used in commands and permission displays.
Password A legacy group-password field; modern administration normally uses explicit membership and privilege tools instead.
GID The numeric group identity used for file and process permissions.
User list Comma-separated supplementary members.

The primary group is not determined by the group file’s member list. It is the GID in the user’s /etc/passwd record (or its NSS equivalent). Supplementary memberships are returned from group records and NSS modules. Check both views:

UID and GID ranges: useful conventions, not universal laws

Current systemd documentation commonly divides IDs as follows. The ranges describe policy, not a guarantee that every distribution follows it.

Numeric range or value Typical interpretation Qualification
0 root, the superuser Required as the administrative identity by the Linux Standard Base (LSB) and systemd guidance.
1–999 System users and service identities systemd’s current convention; local configuration and older releases can differ.
1000–65533 Regular, normally human users Typical systemd range, not a promise that every account in it is interactive.
65534 nobody, the overflow UID Used when a subsystem cannot map an identity; the associated group may be called nogroup.
65536–4294967294 Other regular-user ID space in systemd’s documented split Large or namespace-specific allocations can appear here.

Older systems used boundaries such as 99/100 or 499/500. The LSB 2.0.1 specification documented static system UIDs 0–99 and an administrator or post-install allocation range of 100–499. Those figures are historical guidance, not a safe test for whether an account can be removed. Always inspect the distribution’s configured ranges and the actual account database.

UIDs and GIDs are what the kernel stores on files. If two servers assign different names to the same numeric UID, the permission result still follows the number. For migrations and incident response, record both the number and the resolved name.

What the familiar default names mean

Account or group Role and limitations
root (UID 0) The superuser identity with administrative privilege. Commands run as UID 0 bypass many ordinary permission checks, so use it deliberately and audit changes.
bin A legacy compatibility identity standardized by the LSB. It is not a substitute for a dedicated account for a modern daemon.
daemon Another LSB legacy name retained on some systems. The LSB recommends individual UIDs/GIDs for daemons so one service cannot automatically access another service’s files.
nobody (UID 65534) The conventional overflow identity. NFS and user namespaces are examples of subsystems that may use it when an original identity cannot be mapped. It is not a general-purpose “safe user” for every service.
nogroup A common name for the group associated with the overflow identity; the exact name is distribution-dependent.

Names such as adm, lp, mail, man, operator, sync, shutdown, and halt are optional distribution conventions. The LSB warns that applications must not assume non-system user or group names exist everywhere. A missing optional name is not evidence of a damaged installation.

System users, human users, and service isolation

A system account normally exists so a daemon, package, or compatibility function can own files and processes without running as UID 0. It may have no home directory, a locked password, and a non-interactive shell such as /usr/sbin/nologin. A human account usually has a home directory, an interactive shell, and membership in an administrative or desktop group, but those attributes are policy choices rather than definitions enforced by the kernel.

Do not infer privilege from the word “system” or “user” alone. A service account can own sensitive data, and a human account can be deliberately unprivileged. Check the UID, GID, supplementary groups, file ownership, unit configuration, and sudo or equivalent policy.

How systemd creates and exposes identities

systemd-sysusers

systemd-sysusers declaratively creates system users and groups and can add users to groups during package installation or boot. Its records can describe users, groups, memberships, and ranges. Configuration is read from /etc/sysusers.d, /run/sysusers.d, /usr/local/lib/sysusers.d, and /usr/lib/sysusers.d. Administrator overrides belong in /etc/sysusers.d; vendor files normally live under /usr/lib/sysusers.d.

Sysusers is intended for system identities. Its own manual says it is not useful for creating regular, human users and groups. Use the distribution’s user-management tools for people, not a vendor service-account declaration.

nss-systemd and dynamic users

The nss-systemd module can resolve dynamic users and can synthesize records for root and nobody even when ordinary /etc/passwd or /etc/group entries are absent. Therefore getent passwd may display an identity that is not a literal line in the local file. Use NSS-aware commands when diagnosing ownership of a systemd service.

systemd’s early-boot guidance requires system users and groups to be resolvable without network access. Regular users may come from a remote database when an appropriate cache is available, which is one reason a server can behave differently before and after networking starts.

A safe inspection workflow before changing an account

  1. Resolve the identity through NSS. Run getent passwd NAME, getent group GROUP, and id NAME. Save the numeric UID, primary GID, supplementary groups, home directory, and shell.
  2. Find processes and services. Use ps -eo user, uid, gid, pid, cmd, then inspect service units with systemctl status UNIT and systemctl cat UNIT. Look for timers, sockets, containers, and scheduled jobs as well as the main process.
  3. Locate owned files. On a carefully selected filesystem, search numerically with find /path -xdev -uid UID -o -gid GID. Check mounts and application data before scanning an entire production volume.
  4. Check package ownership. On Debian-family systems, dpkg -S /path/to/file identifies a package; on RPM-family systems, rpm -qf /path/to/file does the equivalent. Package scripts may recreate a service account after removal.
  5. Review authentication and policy. Inspect sudo rules, SSH or console access, cron entries, ACLs, capabilities, and service unit directives. A non-login shell does not revoke permissions granted elsewhere.
  6. Back up and use supported tools. Prefer useradd, usermod, userdel, groupadd, and distribution account tooling. Preserve backups before any direct recovery edit to local databases.

Which accounts are safe to disable or delete?

There is no universal “safe-to-delete” list. An account is a candidate for restriction only after you establish that no enabled package, unit, timer, socket, process, file tree, or remote identity mapping depends on its UID or GID. Removing a line from /etc/passwd does not change ownership numbers on disk; it merely turns friendly names into numeric IDs and can break software that expects the account to exist.

  • Prefer disabling login over deletion. Set a deliberate non-interactive shell where appropriate and lock interactive authentication using the distribution’s supported tool. Keep the service identity if a package still needs it.
  • Do not disable UID 0. Protect administrative access through controlled authentication, least-privilege delegation, and recovery procedures instead.
  • Do not repurpose an old UID casually. A newly created account with a reused number can inherit access to every file carrying that numeric owner.
  • Coordinate package updates. A package installation or upgrade can recreate a declared system user or change its group membership.
  • Test a service restart and reboot path. An account may be needed only when a unit starts, a socket activates, or early boot assembles a mount.

Common administration mistakes and their fixes

“The account is not in /etc/passwd, so it does not exist.”

Run getent passwd NAME and inspect NSS configuration. Dynamic systemd identities and remote directories can resolve successfully without a static local line.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“The name looks harmless, so its files are harmless.”

Run stat or ls -ln to see numeric ownership, then resolve the numbers with getent passwd UID and getent group GID. Names can differ between hosts while numbers continue to control access.

“Changing the shell stops the service.”

A shell affects login handling, not every execution path. A systemd unit, cron job, setuid helper, container, or administrator can execute without starting that shell. Disable the actual service or job after confirming dependencies.

“Every distribution has an adm or sudo group.”

Optional account and administrator-group names vary. Query the target host and read its distribution documentation instead of copying group names from another system.

“A UID range proves whether an account is human.”

Ranges are policy conventions. Verify the account’s creator, package ownership, login policy, and running processes before classifying it.

What to compare when standardizing server images

When evaluating distributions or hardening baselines, compare the account policy rather than just the visible names:

Comparison axis Questions to answer
Static versus dynamic records Are service users written to local files, synthesized by systemd, or supplied by another NSS source?
UID/GID boundaries Where do system IDs end and regular IDs begin on this release, and can local configuration change the boundary?
Service separation Does each daemon receive a dedicated UID/GID, or do several services share a legacy identity?
Login policy Which shell, password-lock, SSH, and console rules are applied to service accounts?
Remote identity sources Can LDAP, NIS, or another NSS source affect lookups, and is an early-boot cache available?
Package lifecycle Will uninstalling, upgrading, or reinstalling a package recreate an account or group?

The operational rule is simple: treat names as labels, numbers as security-relevant data, and account changes as dependency changes. Query the complete NSS view, identify what the identity runs and owns, then apply the smallest reversible change.
