Use a browser demo for the quickest look at Linux, a live USB to test Linux on the computer you may install it on, and a virtual machine (VM) for a reusable Linux environment that runs inside your current operating system. Those methods answer different questions. A browser session shows a hosted desktop, a live USB exercises the target computer’s real hardware, and a VM runs Linux against virtual hardware managed by the host.
If you are unsure, start with a browser demo, move to a live USB for hardware confidence, and add a VM when you want repeated practice without rebooting.
Choose by the question you need answered
The right method depends less on which one is easiest to start and more on what you are trying to learn. A remote desktop can tell you whether you like an interface; only a session on your own computer can reveal whether its Wi-Fi, graphics, touchpad or suspend behavior works; and a VM is the practical choice when you want Linux available alongside your normal operating system.
| Method | Best for | What it actually tests | Main constraint |
|---|---|---|---|
| Browser demo | A fast visual preview and broad interface exploration | A remote or hosted Linux session reached through a browser | Internet access and the service’s availability and session behavior |
| Live USB | Checking whether Linux boots on the computer you may install it on | Linux running on that computer’s physical hardware | Creating boot media and restarting the computer |
| Virtual machine | Learning, software exploration and an ongoing practice installation | Linux running on virtualized devices supplied by the host | Host CPU, memory, storage and virtualization capacity |
Convenience, hardware realism, persistence and setup effort are the useful comparison axes. “No reboot” does not mean “same as your hardware,” and “boots on my laptop” does not mean every installed driver will be present in the preview.

FAT32 USB flash drive is widely applicable, such as in televisions, DVD players, vehicles, printers, embroidery machines, etc. Be patient if you have problems with system recognition. It may take some time for initial recognition, but it will happen.
Browser demos: the fastest first look
What a browser demo is
A browser demo is a Linux desktop delivered through a web page. The available public description of DistroSea characterizes its sessions as online virtual machines, so the browser is displaying a hosted environment rather than booting Linux on your computer. The same service has presented distributions including Ubuntu, Linux Mint, Fedora and Debian. Its creator profile has also mentioned browser audio in an update, but a changing profile is not a reliable catalog or feature specification.
This makes a browser demo useful for deciding whether you like a desktop layout, application menu, settings organization or default workflow. You can open menus, launch included applications and compare the general feel of several distributions without downloading an ISO, writing a USB drive or restarting.
What it cannot establish
A hosted session does not prove how the distribution will perform on your machine. The browser display alone cannot establish your laptop’s graphics acceleration, Wi-Fi chipset support, audio output, webcam, touchpad gestures, sleep and wake behavior, external-monitor handling or unusual peripherals. Those limitations follow from the session being remote and virtualized; they are not a hands-on test of your computer.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Do not assume that files will persist, that response time will be consistent, that the service will always be available, or that a particular distribution will remain in the catalog. Those details can change and are not established by the cited public descriptions.
How to use one productively
- Choose a service that currently offers the distribution or desktop you want to inspect.
- Use a stable internet connection and open the session in a current browser.
- Spend your time on questions a remote desktop can answer: Can you find system settings? Do the menus and window behavior suit you? Are the applications you expect present?
- Write down any hardware questions that remain. Resolve those with a live USB on the actual computer rather than treating the browser result as compatibility evidence.
A browser demo is therefore a screening step, not an installation rehearsal. It is the lowest-effort way to narrow your choices before doing anything that changes boot media or consumes host resources.
Live USB: the meaningful hardware check
Why it is the closest preview to an installation
A live USB starts Linux on the computer’s own processor, graphics adapter, storage controller, network devices and input hardware. Ubuntu’s current “Try Ubuntu Desktop” guidance presents this route as a way to run Ubuntu on a laptop or PC without making permanent changes, and explicitly says you can test Ubuntu from a USB drive to see if it works. That makes it the most relevant of these three methods for a pre-installation hardware check.

The preview is not identical to a finished installation. Canonical notes that it uses open-source drivers only and does not include proprietary drivers, citing NVIDIA graphics as an example. If the display is limited, a wireless adapter is absent, or another device behaves poorly in the preview, that is a signal to investigate the distribution’s driver guidance—not automatic proof that an installed system cannot support the hardware.

USB and Ubuntu requirements
Canonical’s 2026 try-it guide, which identifies Ubuntu Desktop 26.04 LTS, recommends a flash drive of 8GB or above for this trial. The number describes the USB media, not a universal Linux requirement.
Canonical’s current Ubuntu Desktop download page lists these system requirements for that Ubuntu Desktop release:
| Requirement | Published figure | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Processor | 2 GHz dual-core processor or better | Ubuntu Desktop’s stated requirement, not a minimum for every distribution |
| System memory | 6 GB | Ubuntu Desktop’s current listed figure; other editions and releases may differ |
| Free storage | 25 GB | Space listed for an installed Ubuntu Desktop system, not space needed merely to view a browser demo |
Release requirements can change, so check the current page for the exact edition you plan to install.
Make the bootable USB safely
Writing an Ubuntu image rewrites the flash drive and destroys its existing data. Use a blank spare or copy every needed file elsewhere before starting. Creating boot media is not the same as copying an ISO file onto the drive; use the image-writing procedure in Ubuntu’s current USB-creation instructions.
- Back up the USB drive, or select an empty drive, and verify that it is at least 8GB.
- Obtain the Ubuntu Desktop image for the release you intend to test.
- Use an image-writing utility to write the image to the USB device. Confirm the device name carefully so another disk is not overwritten.
- Shut down or restart the computer that you want to test, leaving the USB inserted.
- Open the computer’s one-time boot menu. Ubuntu says F12 is the most common key on PCs; Escape, F2 and F10 are also common alternatives. Apple hardware uses its Startup Manager procedure. Because manufacturers vary, consult the computer’s manual if those keys do not work.
- Select the USB storage device in the boot menu.
- At the Ubuntu startup screen, choose the option to try Ubuntu rather than install it.
- Once the desktop appears, test the devices and workflows that matter to you before deciding whether to install.
The exact labels, timing and firmware screens differ by model. If the machine skips the USB, repeat the restart and use the manufacturer’s documented boot-menu key; do not infer that Linux failed simply because the first key press was missed.

Pro Tip: Maximize performance by reformatting to your optimal file system.(FAT32: Universal compatibility (files under 4GB); exFAT: Cross-platform large file support; NTFS: Advanced Windows features (encryption/compression))
- LED Indicator: The end of the USB storage flash drive is designed with an indicator. The LED indicator lights up when you plug the zip drive usb into the devices, the light blinks while write/read activities are in process. In this case, do not remove the USB drive pack. Otherwise, data integrity and the service life of the USB drives are affected.
Hardware checklist for the live session
- Connect to each available Wi-Fi network and check whether reconnection works after toggling wireless.
- Play audio through the built-in speakers and, if relevant, headphones or Bluetooth equipment.
- Move the pointer, test touchpad clicking and scrolling, and check keyboard shortcuts.
- Open the display settings and look for the expected resolution, brightness controls and external-monitor detection.
- Test the webcam and microphone in an application that can access them.
- Attach the printers, USB accessories or docks you use regularly.
- Close and reopen the lid, or otherwise test suspend and wake if that behavior is important to your workflow.
Record what works, what is missing and whether a proprietary driver is likely involved. A successful live session is strong evidence that the basic hardware path works; a partial session requires driver research before you reject the computer or distribution.
Virtual machines: a contained, reusable Linux installation
What a VM adds
A virtual machine runs as software inside your current operating system. You can install Linux in a separate guest environment, shut it down without changing the host, and start it again later. That is valuable for learning the command line, exploring desktop settings, testing packages, following tutorials or keeping a disposable practice system while continuing to use your normal desktop.
Ubuntu’s current download page links to instructions for running Ubuntu Desktop in VirtualBox, so that is an officially signposted route for Ubuntu users. The exact hypervisor and guest version you choose determine the available settings; follow the current instructions for both rather than relying on a configuration written for an older release.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Set up a VM in a controlled sequence
- Check the host operating system’s requirements and confirm that hardware virtualization is enabled in firmware if the hypervisor requires it.
- Install a supported hypervisor from its official source, then restart the host if its installer requests it.
- Download the Linux ISO for the edition and release you want to practice.
- Create a new virtual machine, select the matching Linux type, and attach the ISO as its virtual optical disk.
- Assign memory, virtual storage and processor capacity conservatively. Leave enough resources for the host to remain responsive.
- Start the VM and complete the guest installer in the virtual disk, not on the host’s physical disk.
- Install the guest integration tools recommended by the hypervisor and guest documentation if you need better pointer integration, display resizing or clipboard behavior.
- Take a snapshot or make a guest backup before experimenting with software that may destabilize the installation.
The VM is reusable because its virtual disk and configuration remain available after shutdown. That persistence is an advantage over a one-off preview, but it also means you must manage the guest’s storage, updates and backups.
Interpreting memory guidance
Ubuntu’s community requirements page lists 2048 MiB for virtualized installs and 4096 MiB for physical installs. Those figures come from a community wiki and may be stale, so they are guidance rather than current official requirements. The current Ubuntu Desktop download page’s published figures—2 GHz dual-core processor, 6 GB system memory and 25 GB of free storage—are the stronger reference for that release, while a VM also needs resources reserved for the host.
Do not allocate all available memory or processors to the guest. A host that is starved of resources can make both systems unpleasant to use even if the guest technically boots. Check the current host and guest documentation for your chosen versions before fixing an allocation.

What a VM will not tell you
The guest sees virtualized graphics, networking, storage and input devices. Consequently, a VM is weaker evidence for the physical computer’s Wi-Fi chipset, GPU driver, webcam, suspend behavior, battery life, fan control or special keys than a live USB. It can confirm that Linux applications and workflows are usable in an isolated environment, but it cannot certify every path between your laptop’s hardware and a native installation.

Browser demo, live USB or VM: a decision framework
Start with the least commitment
If your only question is whether Linux looks comfortable, open a browser demo. It avoids downloads, boot-menu settings and changes to any disk. Stop there if interface familiarity is all you need.
Move to the target computer for compatibility
If you are considering Linux for a particular laptop or desktop, create a live USB and boot that machine. Test the devices you depend on, then investigate any missing hardware in the distribution’s driver documentation. This step is the one that can reveal firmware, graphics or peripheral issues before an installation replaces your current system.
Use a VM for repeated practice
If you want to learn Linux over days or weeks, run development tools, follow administration lessons or keep a separate environment without rebooting, create a VM. It is also a safer place to experiment with packages and configuration changes because the guest is separated from the host’s normal installation, although important guest data still needs backups.
Combine methods when your needs overlap
A sensible sequence for someone who is both undecided and concerned about hardware is:
- Use a browser demo to compare desktop layouts and decide which distributions deserve attention.
- Boot the leading choice from a live USB on the intended computer and test real devices.
- Set up a VM if you want a longer-lived practice installation or need to learn software before committing to a native install.
You do not have to choose one method permanently. Each answers a different question, and moving from a low-commitment preview to a hardware test avoids drawing conclusions from the wrong environment.

Troubleshooting and common mistakes
The browser session will not load
Check the internet connection, try again later and verify that the service currently offers the selected distribution. A browser demo depends on the provider’s availability; a failed session does not diagnose your computer’s Linux compatibility. If the service is unavailable, use an official ISO and a live USB or VM instead.
The computer ignores the USB
Confirm that the image was written with an image tool rather than copied as a single file, keep the drive inserted during restart, and use the manufacturer’s documented one-time boot key. F12, Escape, F2 and F10 are common PC choices, but no single key is universal. If the USB still does not appear, check firmware boot settings and try another port or a freshly written drive.
A device is missing in the live preview
First identify whether the device depends on a proprietary driver. Ubuntu’s preview intentionally uses open-source drivers and specifically warns about this limitation for NVIDIA graphics. Search the distribution’s current driver instructions and test again after installation only when you understand the recovery options; do not treat the preview’s limitation as a guaranteed final verdict.

Check that the host has enough free memory and storage, that hardware virtualization is enabled where required, and that the guest has not been assigned nearly all of the host’s resources. Confirm that the ISO matches the guest type selected in the VM wizard. If the host becomes unresponsive, reduce the guest allocation or shut it down before changing settings.
You lost files while making the USB
The image-writing process erases the target flash drive. Restore from your backup if necessary, and reserve a clearly identified spare drive for future boot media. Treat the device-selection confirmation as a critical safety check every time you write an image.
What the evidence does—and does not—show
There is no established statistic here comparing success rates, performance or user preference among browser demos, live USBs and VMs. The methods are not interchangeable tests: they run Linux against remote, physical or virtual hardware respectively. Conclusions should therefore be framed around the question each method can answer, not around an invented ranking or benchmark.
DistroSea’s public listing used for the browser description was last updated on April 29, 2024, while its creator profile was crawled more recently; catalog and feature details can change. Ubuntu’s documentation and requirements can also change with future releases. Verify the current service and release documentation when you are ready to proceed.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteBottom line
Choose a browser demo to see Linux quickly, a live USB to test booting and basic hardware on the computer you may install, and a virtual machine to maintain a separate Linux environment inside your current OS. For most undecided users who care about both usability and hardware, preview in a browser, validate with a live USB, then use a VM for ongoing practice.
