Choose the Linn 343 only if you want a dealer-installed reference system and accept a £45,000–£65,000 launch price. It is a compact floorstanding speaker, not a bookshelf model, and its Exakt Integrated and PWAB versions use very different amplification architectures. For most buyers seeking a genuinely compact passive system, the KEF LS50 Meta is the more rational value choice; the Bowers & Wilkins 705 S3 is another premium standmount option, particularly when its 50Hz–28kHz ±3dB specification fits your system plan. There is no controlled independent head-to-head test proving one sounds better than the others, so auditioning is essential.

The short answer: these are not three equivalent products

The Linn 343 occupies a different category from the KEF LS50 Meta and Bowers & Wilkins 705 S3. Linn describes the 343 as a compact reference design, but its 1,091mm height, 52kg-per-speaker mass and supplied stand make it a floorstanding system. The KEF and Bowers & Wilkins models are conventional passive standmount speakers: you provide the stands, amplifier, source components and, if required, a subwoofer.

That distinction matters more than a simple “which sounds best?” ranking. A Linn 343 purchase is primarily a decision about system architecture, installation and budget. The LS50 Meta and 705 S3 are decisions about component matching and how much of the system you want to assemble yourself.

No controlled independent listening test comparing the 343 directly with either standmount was identified. Claims that one is universally superior would therefore go beyond the available evidence. The safest approach is to compare complete systems in your room or at a dealer, using the same sources and recordings.

What the Linn 343 actually is

A compact floorstander with two configurations

Linn offers the 343 in two versions. The 343 Exakt Integrated is a four-way active architecture with Linn’s Exakt digital crossover, DAC architecture and multi-amplification. The 343 PWAB (Passive with Active Bass) is a three-way design in which an external amplifier drives the upper array while the bass section has its own internal amplification.

In practical terms, Exakt Integrated is the more self-contained option: digital signal division, conversion and amplification are built into the speaker system. PWAB retains a passive signal path for the upper section, so you still choose an external amplifier, while the low-frequency section is powered inside the speaker. Neither version is a conventional passive bookshelf speaker.

Published size and driver layout

Linn Japan’s 2026 specification lists each 343 at 338 × 1091 × 466mm and 52kg including the stand. The driver complement is a 19mm tweeter, 64mm midrange, 190mm upper-bass driver and 220mm lower-bass driver. Those dimensions are compact for a reference floorstander, but they are substantially taller and heavier than a typical standmount plus stand.

Linn’s Japanese product page presents the design goal as “反応の速さとダイナミズム。コンパクト・リファレンススピーカー” (“speed of response and dynamism. Compact reference speaker”). That is a design ambition, not an independent measurement, so use it to understand the product’s positioning rather than as proof of a sonic result.

A House of Linn dealer listing advertises the system from £45,500 and invites customers to book an audition. That figure is a dealer claim and should be checked against the exact configuration and region. The apparent difference from the £45,000 launch figure is a reason to request a written quotation rather than assume that either number is a universal retail price.

Even before adding electronics, the Linn’s launch prices are many times the cost of a normal premium standmount system. “Worth it” therefore depends on whether you value Linn’s integrated architecture, installation support and bass capability enough to accept that price, not on a small difference in conventional speaker specifications.

Linn 343 versus KEF LS50 Meta

Why the KEF is the value-oriented alternative

KEF specifies the LS50 Meta around its 12th-generation Uni-Q driver array and Metamaterial Absorption Technology (MAT). It is a passive standmount, so the owner can choose amplification, source equipment and stands independently. What Hi-Fi’s 2026 bookshelf-speaker guide names it “best passive overall,” which makes it the strongest value-oriented passive alternative in this comparison set.

That recommendation does not make the KEF a smaller Linn 343. The LS50 Meta’s appeal is flexibility and cost control: you can start with a modest system, change the amplifier later and add a subwoofer only if your room or music demands it. The Linn instead commits you to a much larger initial outlay and a particular system philosophy.

When the Linn is the more appropriate choice

Choose the 343 over the LS50 Meta when you specifically want a floorstanding reference system with integrated processing and amplification, substantial built-in bass hardware and dealer-led setup. The Exakt Integrated is especially relevant if you do not want to design a separate crossover, DAC and power-amplifier chain. PWAB suits a buyer who wants to retain an external amplifier for the upper array but does not want to provide a separate bass amplifier.

When the KEF is the better fit

The LS50 Meta is the more sensible route when the room is small, the budget is finite, or you enjoy selecting electronics yourself. Its standmount format also makes placement and furniture integration easier in many rooms, although a stand is not optional if you want the intended listening height. Because no direct controlled comparison exists, do not assume the Linn’s price guarantees a preferred tonal balance or imaging result in your room.

Linn 343 versus Bowers & Wilkins 705 S3

What the published Bowers & Wilkins specification tells you

Bowers & Wilkins publishes a 50Hz–28kHz ±3dB frequency response for the 705 S3. That is a useful boundary for system planning: it identifies the stated response window but does not predict how much bass you will hear at your listening position, how the speaker behaves below 50Hz, or how it will integrate with a particular subwoofer.

The 705 S3 is a premium passive standmount. You must budget for suitable stands and an amplifier, then decide whether its specified low-frequency reach is sufficient for your music. A subwoofer is not automatically required for two-channel listening, but it becomes a rational option if you want deeper bass than the published response suggests or need higher output at low frequencies.

Why the 343 remains a different proposition

The Linn’s two dedicated bass drivers and floorstanding cabinet give it a larger physical bass system than either standmount, but the supplied material does not provide a directly comparable frequency-response figure. You should therefore compare them by architecture and complete-system behavior, not by claiming an unverified extension advantage.

The 705 S3 can be the better choice for a listener who values a premium standmount cabinet, wants to select an amplifier independently and has a clear plan for stands and possible subwoofer integration. The 343 is aimed at someone who wants fewer separate boxes and is prepared to pay for that integration.

Small-room practicality, placement and furniture fit

What “compact” means in this comparison

At 338mm wide and 466mm deep, the 343 is relatively narrow for a floorstander, but its 1,091mm height and 52kg mass per speaker make it a substantial piece of furniture. Measure doorways, stairwells, equipment access and the final listening position before ordering. A dealer should confirm delivery and installation requirements rather than treating it like a bookshelf speaker that one person can unpack.

Standmount models occupy less cabinet volume, but their stands add height, floor area and cost. A standmount can also be easier to move while you experiment with toe-in and distance from walls. That flexibility is valuable in a small room where a few centimetres of placement can change bass balance.

A practical placement procedure

  1. Measure the listening seat, front wall and side-wall distances. Leave enough clearance to place each speaker symmetrically.
  2. Position the speakers so the tweeters are near seated ear height. For the LS50 Meta and 705 S3, this normally means using rigid stands of the correct height rather than a shelf.
  3. Start with equal distances to the side walls and a modest toe-in toward the listening position.
  4. Play familiar vocal recordings and bass lines. Move both speakers together in small increments; do not judge one speaker at a time.
  5. For a Linn audition, ask the dealer to demonstrate the exact Exakt Integrated or PWAB configuration you would buy, not a different electronics package.

These steps are setup guidance, not a substitute for manufacturer placement instructions. The 343’s exact boundary behavior and any recommended clearance should be confirmed with Linn or the installing dealer.

Do you need a subwoofer?

With the Linn 343, a subwoofer should be treated as a system-design choice rather than an assumed upgrade. Its 190mm and 220mm bass drivers indicate a substantial built-in low-frequency section, but no official frequency limit is provided in the supplied specifications. Ask the dealer to demonstrate whether a subwoofer adds useful output in your room or merely complicates integration.

For the 705 S3, Bowers & Wilkins’ stated 50Hz–28kHz ±3dB response gives you a clearer planning reference. If you listen to organ, electronic music, film scores or large-scale orchestral recordings and want energy below the stated range, audition with a properly integrated subwoofer. If your priority is vocal, acoustic or chamber music at moderate levels, you may prefer the simpler standmount-only system.

The LS50 Meta is also compatible with a staged upgrade path: begin with the passive pair and stands, then add a subwoofer after you have optimized placement and amplifier matching. Do not buy a subwoofer to compensate for speakers that are poorly positioned or an amplifier that is clipping.

Amplifier, source and dealer requirements

Exakt Integrated

The Exakt Integrated version includes the digital crossover, DAC architecture and multi-amplification needed for its active design. Confirm which source inputs, network components and control hardware are included in the quoted system. Because the signal path is part of the speaker package, installation and software configuration are important parts of the purchase rather than optional accessories.

PWAB

PWAB requires an external amplifier for the upper array while the bass section is internally powered. Ask the dealer about the required connection method, amplifier power range, cable layout and whether your existing amplifier is suitable. Its hybrid architecture is not equivalent to either a fully passive speaker or the Exakt Integrated model.

Passive standmounts

Both the LS50 Meta and 705 S3 require an external amplifier and a source. The right choice depends on room size, listening level, impedance behavior, tonal preference and available upgrade budget; those details are not established by the limited specifications supplied here. A dealer demonstration using the amplifier you own, or realistically plan to buy, is more informative than comparing speaker cabinets in isolation.

A buying decision that matches your priorities

If your priority is… Most logical starting point Why
Integrated digital crossover, DAC and amplification Linn 343 Exakt Integrated Those functions are built into the four-way active system
External amplifier choice with powered bass Linn 343 PWAB The upper array remains externally amplified while bass is internally powered
Lowest system complexity and cost among these options KEF LS50 Meta Passive standmount format allows incremental electronics and subwoofer decisions
Premium passive standmount with a published 50Hz–28kHz ±3dB response Bowers & Wilkins 705 S3 Its specification provides a useful starting point for bass and subwoofer planning
Floorstanding format without a separate subwoofer as the first step Linn 343 It includes dedicated upper- and lower-bass drivers, though no response limit is stated
Easy relocation or frequent furniture changes Either passive standmount Smaller cabinets are generally easier to reposition, provided proper stands are used

How to audition before spending

  1. Choose the exact model. Do not compare a 343 Exakt Integrated demonstration with a PWAB quote or assume the two versions sound and operate identically.
  2. Bring familiar recordings. Use tracks with vocals, sparse acoustic instruments, dense mixes and sustained bass. Listen for timing, vocal focus, treble balance and bass integration rather than showroom volume.
  3. Match levels. A louder speaker often appears more impressive. Ask the dealer to match playback levels as closely as practical.
  4. Use comparable electronics. Compare the LS50 Meta and 705 S3 with amplification you could actually purchase, and ask how the Linn’s integrated signal path changes the setup.
  5. Test placement. Hear the standmounts on their intended stands and the 343 in a position that resembles your room. Include at least one near-wall and one more open placement if the dealer permits.
  6. Request a complete quotation. Include delivery, installation, stands, cables, required control hardware, taxes and any subwoofer you are considering.
  7. Arrange a home trial when possible. There is no independent controlled 343-versus-standmount test establishing a universal winner, and room acoustics can outweigh small specification differences.

Verdict

The Linn 343 is worth its price only for a narrow but real use case: a buyer wants a compact reference floorstander, accepts a £45,000–£65,000 launch-price range, and values Linn’s integrated or hybrid active architecture enough to use dealer-led setup. Exakt Integrated is the most self-contained choice; PWAB is for an owner who wants external amplification for the upper array and powered bass.

For a small-room listener seeking a high-end system without committing to a six-figure package, the KEF LS50 Meta is the clearest value-oriented recommendation in this set, with stands and possibly a subwoofer added to suit the room. The Bowers & Wilkins 705 S3 is a credible alternative when its passive format, published 50Hz–28kHz ±3dB response and your amplifier plans align. Audition the complete systems before deciding; the available evidence does not support declaring a universal sonic winner.
