LinkedIn’s 2026 list of the 10 companies “on the rise” in Seattle is not a list of 10 Seattle-headquartered startups. GeekWire’s fact-check found that four entries—Anthropic, Auger, Whatnot and Armada—are headquartered outside the Seattle area. The other six are based in Bellevue, Seattle, Redmond or Kent.

The discrepancy comes from LinkedIn’s methodology: its Seattle ranking measures momentum and recruiting signals associated with the region, but does not require a Seattle-area corporate headquarters.

Which companies are actually based in the Seattle area?

GeekWire identified six locally based companies in LinkedIn’s ranking:

  • Truveta (#4) — Bellevue
  • Yoodli (#5) — Seattle
  • Worldscape (#6) — Redmond
  • Overland AI (#7) — Seattle
  • Gradial (#8) — Seattle
  • Stoke Space (#10) — Kent

“Seattle area” therefore includes neighboring cities across the Puget Sound technology corridor, not only Seattle’s city limits.

The four entries headquartered outside the region

Company LinkedIn rank Headquarters identified by GeekWire Seattle-area connection
Anthropic Not stated in the supplied list details San Francisco LinkedIn’s methodology can include companies with significant teams outside their headquarters; the specific Seattle footprint was not quantified.
Auger Not stated in the supplied list details Dallas after an August 2026 move Retains an engineering center in Bellevue.
Whatnot Not stated in the supplied list details Los Angeles area Included in the Seattle ranking despite its non-local headquarters; the Seattle operation’s size was not stated.
Armada Not stated in the supplied list details San Francisco, according to its LinkedIn profile Included under LinkedIn’s regional ranking rules; the specific local workforce was not stated.

Four of 10 entries were headquartered outside the region—40%, a calculation from GeekWire’s count rather than a statistic quoted by LinkedIn. That is the geographic problem behind the headline, but it does not prove that those companies have no economic or hiring activity in Seattle.

Why LinkedIn’s Seattle ranking allows non-local headquarters

LinkedIn’s methodology weighs four signals:

  1. Employment growth
  2. Engagement with a company’s LinkedIn page
  3. Interest in the company’s job openings
  4. The ability to attract talent from LinkedIn’s list of top companies

The data covers July 2025 through June 2026. LinkedIn requires companies in its U.S. rankings to have U.S. headquarters, but its Seattle list does not require a Seattle-area headquarters. A company can therefore rank highly when its Seattle hiring, employee growth or recruiting interest generates strong signals, even if its legal or corporate base is San Francisco, Dallas or the Los Angeles area.

LinkedIn’s 2025 Seattle post described the feature as an annual, data-based look at 10 companies and explicitly noted that some companies headquartered elsewhere were building serious technology teams in Seattle. In that framing, “Seattle companies” means firms showing meaningful momentum connected to the market, not necessarily firms incorporated or headquartered there.

How to read the list without confusing headquarters and local presence

Headquarters is a corporate fact

A headquarters location identifies where a company says its central base is located. GeekWire’s check places Anthropic and Armada in San Francisco, Whatnot in the Los Angeles area, and Auger in Dallas after its August move. Auger’s Bellevue engineering center is a separate operating presence, not a change to its headquarters.

A regional ranking measures activity

Employment growth, job-opening interest and talent attraction can all be generated by a satellite office or engineering hub. Those signals may matter to Seattle workers and recruiters even when executive offices and legal headquarters are elsewhere.

Rank positions are snapshots

The list reflects the July 2025–June 2026 measurement period. Company moves, office openings and hiring changes can alter both a company’s location and its ranking in a later edition.

The complete local-versus-nonlocal picture

LinkedIn position Company Geographic classification
#4 Truveta Bellevue, Seattle area
#5 Yoodli Seattle, Seattle area
#6 Worldscape Redmond, Seattle area
#7 Overland AI Seattle, Seattle area
#8 Gradial Seattle, Seattle area
#10 Stoke Space Kent, Seattle area
Other four entries Anthropic, Auger, Whatnot and Armada Headquartered outside the Seattle area; local operations vary and were not fully quantified

The supplied list details do not provide the positions for the four non-local companies, so those cells are not inferred here. What is established is the geographic split: six locally based companies and four companies headquartered elsewhere.

Why the distinction matters for job seekers and recruiters

Someone looking for a Seattle startup job should not treat the ranking as a list of local headquarters. Check each company’s current LinkedIn page, office locations and open roles before assuming a position is in Seattle, Bellevue, Redmond, Kent or another city. Recruiters should likewise distinguish a Seattle engineering center from a company’s corporate base when reporting market presence.

The list can still be useful: its signals identify companies attracting attention, growing employment or drawing job interest during the measured year. It simply answers a different question from “Which startups are headquartered in Seattle?”

The criticism of LinkedIn’s labeling

GeekWire columnist and angel investor Charles Fitzgerald summarized the frustration with the wording: “For a Microsoft-owned company, you’d think they’d have better insight into where Seattle is actually located.” The comment targets the geographic label, not the possibility that non-local companies employ people or recruit in the Seattle market.

In practical terms, LinkedIn’s ranking is best read as a list of companies rising in the Seattle talent and business ecosystem, with headquarters status checked separately.
