Choose LinkedIn Services Marketplace if your work depends on professional credibility, referrals and consultative B2B relationships, and you are comfortable handling contracts and payment yourself. Choose Upwork if you want a dedicated stream of posted jobs, proposal tools, pre-scoped packages, payment protection and on-platform payouts, while accepting freelancer and client fees. For many independent professionals, LinkedIn is the better source of higher-trust B2B leads; Upwork is the more complete transaction system for clearly defined deliverables.

The recommendation above is an inference from each platform’s documented workflow, not a guarantee of lead quality in every industry or country. Your niche, proof of results, response speed and ability to qualify prospects can outweigh the platform’s design.
How LinkedIn Services Marketplace works
Your Service Page is a professional storefront
A provider creates a LinkedIn Service Page describing the services offered and the business behind them. The page is connected to your professional identity, so a prospect can inspect your profile, employment history, recommendations, posts and shared connections in the same visit. That context is valuable when the buyer is hiring for a sensitive project, needs executive access or wants evidence that you understand a regulated or specialized industry.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
LinkedIn says clients can discover providers through the Services Marketplace, ordinary LinkedIn search or recommendations from their network. A client can request a proposal, send the request to additional providers, or use automatic matching. Potential clients can contact providers for free regardless of connection degree, so a prospect does not need to become a first-degree connection before starting a conversation.
#1 Best Overall
Requests, matching and proposals
The request-and-proposal process is intentionally conversation-led. A client describes a need, providers respond and the parties discuss scope, timing and price. Automatic matching is based on provider availability. LinkedIn’s guidance says clients cannot filter automatic matching requests by location, industry or other specific criteria, which can make the matching stream less precise than a manually targeted search.
That limitation matters for specialists. A cybersecurity adviser, localization consultant or enterprise change-management firm may receive a request that is broadly adjacent but not commercially suitable. Treat matching as an additional lead source, not as a replacement for a carefully written Service Page, targeted profile keywords and active relationship building.
Contracts and payment happen outside LinkedIn
Once the client receives a desirable proposal, LinkedIn’s documented process has the client and provider agree on project terms outside LinkedIn, after which the provider completes the work. You select the contract form, statement-of-work format, invoicing method, deposit rules, currency and payment processor. That flexibility can fit an established consultancy, but it also means you must supply the safeguards that a marketplace would otherwise provide.
- Define the deliverables, exclusions, milestones, acceptance criteria and revision limits in writing.
- Set a deposit or milestone schedule that matches your cash-flow and project risk.
- Specify who owns work product, source files, data and intellectual property, and when ownership transfers.
- Address confidentiality, security obligations, liability limits, cancellation and late-payment remedies.
- Verify the client’s legal entity and payment contact before beginning substantial work.
What LinkedIn may cost
The cited LinkedIn provider guidance states that potential clients can contact providers for free, but it does not state a marketplace commission charged on the provider’s project value. Some Service Page capabilities require Premium Business, Sales Navigator or Recruiter Lite. Those subscriptions are optional product tiers rather than a stated per-project commission; the exact feature availability and pricing can change by market and account.

Do not describe LinkedIn as universally free. You can receive contact without paying a marketplace percentage, yet you may choose a paid subscription for prospecting or enhanced features, and you still bear the cost of your own contracting, invoicing, payment processing and collections.
How Upwork works
Two ways to find work
Upwork combines a searchable job marketplace with a catalog of pre-scoped services. In Talent Marketplace, you search for hourly or fixed-price assignments, submit a proposal, set your rate and explain how you would approach the work. The client compares proposals and may interview or message shortlisted freelancers.
Project Catalog reverses the process. You publish a defined offer with a scope, delivery time, price and terms, and a client can purchase that package without writing a custom job post. Catalog works well for services that can be productized, such as a technical audit, a three-page website, a data-cleaning task or a fixed number of consulting hours. It is less suitable when discovery must precede any credible estimate.

Payment protection and payouts
Upwork documents hourly payment protection and fixed-price milestone protection. It also provides invoicing and payout methods that include direct deposit, PayPal, Payoneer and wire transfer, subject to the options and eligibility in your location. Keeping the contract and payment on the platform gives both parties a documented workflow and reduces the need to build an escrow process yourself, although you still need to follow the platform’s rules and submit work in the required format.
Rank #3
Protection is not permission to skip project controls. For fixed-price work, write milestones that produce reviewable outcomes rather than one vague final delivery. For hourly work, record time accurately, describe activity in memos and keep copies of important communications and files. A platform process can help with a dispute; it cannot turn an unclear scope into a successful project.
Upwork fees in 2026
Upwork’s 2026 freelancer guide states that joining is free and that freelancers pay a 0%-15% service fee on what they earn on Upwork. The applicable percentage can depend on the contract and the terms shown to you, so check the fee displayed before submitting or accepting work. Price proposals so the net amount after the fee still covers delivery, tax, administrative time and non-billable communication.
Clients may also pay a marketplace fee on transactions and a one-time contract-initiation fee for each new marketplace or Project Catalog contract. Upwork’s legal center says these rates can vary and are shown before the client forms the contract. A client’s total cost can therefore be higher than the amount you see as your quoted project price.

Which platform produces better clients?
Choose LinkedIn for credibility-led B2B selling
LinkedIn is usually the stronger starting point when a buyer wants to know who you are before discussing a deliverable. Professional identity, mutual connections, recommendations, published expertise and a company presence can shorten the trust-building stage. A buyer may be hiring a fractional executive, compliance adviser, organizational consultant or specialist agency where judgment matters more than the lowest comparable bid.
The sales cycle is often less predictable. A useful conversation may begin with a message, move to a call, require a diagnostic phase and end in a proposal for a project that was never posted publicly. You need a clear qualification process and a contract template because LinkedIn does not supply the transaction layer.
Choose Upwork for defined, comparable assignments
Upwork is generally better when a client can compare your offer against other proposals using concrete criteria: deliverables, hours, milestones, price and deadline. Its job feed creates active buying intent, while Project Catalog lets you advertise a repeatable package rather than waiting for a referral.

The trade-off is competition and fee sensitivity. Clients can evaluate many profiles side by side, and some jobs attract proposals from a wide range of rates. Differentiation must be visible in the first lines of your proposal, your relevant work samples and the specificity of your delivery plan.
Where higher-quality B2B clients are more likely
For higher-value B2B consulting, LinkedIn is the stronger default because the buyer can validate professional context and obtain a referral before discussing terms. That is a probability, not a guarantee: Upwork also hosts serious businesses and long-term engagements, particularly when the scope is clear and the client values platform protections. Define “quality” as fit, budget, decision authority, realistic timing and willingness to provide access—not simply the name of the platform.
LinkedIn playbook: turn visibility into qualified conversations
- Choose one commercial problem. Describe the outcome you solve, the buyer who owns it and the situation that triggers a purchase. “B2B content strategy” is weaker than “content systems for Series B software teams entering enterprise sales.”
- Build the Service Page around evidence. State the engagement types, industries you understand, typical outputs and the information a prospect should bring to an initial conversation. Use examples and measurable outcomes only when you can substantiate them.
- Align your main profile. Make your headline, About section, featured work and recommendations reinforce the same service. A prospect should not have to reconcile conflicting specialties.
- Make contact easy. Explain the next step, such as a short fit call or written brief. Because potential clients can contact you without being connected, do not rely on connection requests as the only call to action.
- Respond with qualification questions. Ask about the business objective, decision maker, deadline, budget range, existing assets and approval process before writing a detailed proposal.
- Send a proposal that matches the conversation. Separate discovery from delivery, list assumptions and offer one or two scope options rather than an unbounded promise.
- Move the deal into a written contract. Confirm scope, milestones, payment schedule, confidentiality, intellectual property and change control before starting. Use a deposit when the project requires significant upfront work.
- Close the feedback loop. After completion, invite a review through the Service Page process and request a recommendation that describes the business result, not only your friendliness or speed.
Upwork playbook: win work without racing to the bottom
- Filter before you apply. Prioritize jobs with a complete brief, a realistic budget, a verified or otherwise credible client profile, clear decision authority and a deliverable you can estimate.
- Lead with the client’s risk. In the opening lines, identify the likely obstacle and the first action you would take. Avoid a biography that delays the answer to the client’s problem.
- Show one relevant proof point. Use a directly comparable sample, short case explanation or narrowly relevant credential. More samples are not automatically more persuasive.
- Propose a bounded plan. State the steps, inputs required from the client, review points, timeline and what is excluded. For ambiguous work, propose a paid discovery milestone instead of guessing at a full fixed price.
- Price for the net result. Account for the displayed freelancer service fee, taxes, platform administration, revisions and time spent communicating. A low headline price that cannot support quality creates a bad contract for both sides.
- Use milestones for fixed-price projects. Tie each milestone to a reviewable output and wait for the appropriate approval before beginning the next stage.
- Productize repeatable work. In Project Catalog, define scope, turnaround, revisions, client inputs and optional upgrades so a buyer can purchase without a discovery call.
- Keep records inside the contract workflow. Submit files, explanations and status updates through the required channels, and maintain your own copies of deliverables and time records.
Risks, limitations and practical safeguards
LinkedIn’s off-platform model
Leaving LinkedIn for contracting and payment gives you control, but it creates operational work. A client can be genuine and still pay late; a well-intentioned project can expand beyond the original brief. Use a signed agreement, a documented approval process and payment milestones. If the client refuses basic commercial terms or asks you to begin substantial work without a commitment, treat that as a qualification failure rather than a platform problem.
Upwork’s centralized model
Upwork reduces payment administration but imposes platform rules and fees. Read the current terms attached to the specific contract, especially when a job involves hourly protection, fixed-price milestones, a catalog purchase or a Direct Contract. Do not assume that a fee or protection described for one product applies to another.
Matching and marketplace noise
LinkedIn’s automatic matching cannot be filtered by location, industry or other specific criteria according to its provider guidance. Upwork’s open job feed can expose you to projects outside your niche and to buyers comparing many bids. In both cases, a narrow positioning statement and fast, relevant qualification improve the signal-to-noise ratio more than simply creating more listings.
Can you use both?
Yes. The platforms can serve different stages of the same business rather than compete for every lead. Use LinkedIn to publish expertise, develop referrals and start conversations with buyers who need judgment-heavy help. Use Upwork when a prospect wants a defined package, platform payment protection or a documented marketplace contract.
Keep the commercial logic consistent across channels. Your positioning, case evidence and baseline scope should not contradict each other. At the same time, respect each platform’s rules about moving conversations or payments away from its marketplace. Choose the channel based on the buyer’s preferred purchasing process, not on a promise that one profile will produce every kind of client.
A decision checklist
- Is the service difficult to compare without a conversation? Start with LinkedIn.
- Can you describe the outcome, inputs, deadline and price in a package? Consider Upwork Project Catalog.
- Do referrals and professional reputation materially influence the purchase? Prioritize LinkedIn.
- Do you need escrow-like milestone handling, hourly protection or platform payouts? Prioritize Upwork.
- Are you prepared to write contracts, invoice clients and pursue late payments? LinkedIn’s flexibility is more workable.
- Can your price absorb a 0%-15% Upwork freelancer fee when that rate applies? If not, adjust the offer or use a different channel.
- Would a client accept marketplace and contract-initiation fees in addition to your quoted price? Confirm the buyer sees those charges before agreeing.
- Is the project ambiguous enough that a fixed quote would be speculation? Sell discovery first, regardless of platform.
Bottom line
LinkedIn Services Marketplace is better for finding clients when trust, referrals and professional context drive a consultative B2B sale. Upwork is better when you want a purpose-built marketplace for searchable jobs, proposals, productized offers and protected on-platform payments. Start where your service and your buyer’s purchasing process naturally fit; use both only when each has a distinct job in your client-acquisition system.
