For a new installation, LineageOS is the more defensible choice—but only when your exact phone model and regional variant appear on LineageOS’s current device list. Pixel Experience’s official-device repository was archived and made read-only on April 10, 2024. Its remaining device pages document historical builds, not an active update program. Treat Pixel Experience as a legacy ROM rather than as a current alternative for security or feature updates.
Neither project can guarantee identical camera quality, battery life, cellular behavior, banking-app compatibility, or performance on every phone. Your model number, codename, firmware, bootloader status, installation method, and the apps you need matter more than the project names.
Quick verdict
| Question | Best-supported answer |
|---|---|
| Which project is the forward-looking option? | LineageOS, provided the exact device is officially listed and has a current device guide. |
| Is Pixel Experience still actively supported? | Its official-device GitHub repository has been archived since April 10, 2024. Remaining pages are historical records. |
| Can I flash a build for a similar model? | No. Both projects’ documentation says a different or merely similar device is unsupported. |
| Will calls, cameras, encryption, sensors, and Wi-Fi work? | Official projects set hardware-support requirements, but real behavior remains model- and build-specific. |
| Will banking or payment apps work? | There is no universal guarantee. Compatibility depends on the app, device, ROM build, installation state, and the app’s integrity checks. |
Use that verdict as a starting point, not as permission to flash immediately. A custom-ROM installation can erase the phone, fail on an ineligible bootloader, or leave you without a working recovery if you use the wrong files.

Online device pages are historical, not a promise of new builds
The Pixel Experience devices directory can still show device names and old build dates. A page remaining online does not establish that a build is receiving current patches, that bugs are being fixed, or that a maintainer is still publishing updates. Do not interpret a surviving download page as an endorsement for a new daily-driver installation.
What this means for an existing installation
If Pixel Experience is already on your phone, you may have a functioning historical build. The official evidence does not support assuming that it will continue receiving security or feature updates. The Pixel Experience FAQ also explains that old builds may not be retained because of security and breakage concerns; keep a recovery plan and a copy of your personal data before attempting a move.
Exact-device support is the first decision
Search by model number and codename
Start with the phone’s complete model identifier, not just its marketing family. Two phones sold under the same name can use different radios, storage, cameras, bootloader rules, or regional firmware. Record the model number shown in Android settings or on the manufacturer label, then identify the codename used by the ROM project.

Open the LineageOS Devices page and search for the exact model and variant. LineageOS states that devices not listed are unsupported, that builds for another device cannot be used, and that a “nearly identical” model is not sufficient. A family name, carrier name, or screen size is not a substitute for an exact match.

Pixel Experience applies the same rule
Pixel Experience’s FAQ says an unlisted device is unsupported and that a different-device build cannot be substituted. Similar-looking hardware does not make a package safe. If the exact model is absent, stop rather than trying a package for another region or year.
Check more than the download page
- Confirm the full model number and codename.
- Read the current device-specific installation guide, including required firmware and recovery versions.
- Check whether the manufacturer permits bootloader unlocking for your region and carrier edition.
- Verify that the guide matches your Android version and partition layout.
- Look for recent device-specific notices about camera, calls, encryption, sensors, or known installation blocks.
Project requirements are not a feature guarantee
LineageOS’s published baseline
LineageOS publishes device-support requirements for official builds. The requirements address core functions such as cellular connectivity, encryption, Wi-Fi, cameras, and sensors. They describe what a device must provide to qualify for official support; they do not promise that every camera mode, carrier feature, or stock-firmware behavior will be identical after installation.
Pixel Experience’s historical requirement
The Pixel Experience FAQ likewise describes full hardware support and stability as requirements for official devices. That requirement explains how a device could have been accepted historically, but it does not create a current maintenance commitment after the official-device repository was archived.
Why anecdotal comparisons mislead
There is no defensible universal speed, battery, camera, or compatibility winner in the available official evidence. Results can change with a modem revision, firmware package, camera blobs, kernel, build date, and configuration. Treat claims such as “this ROM always improves battery” or “that ROM always breaks the camera” as device-specific reports to verify, not as project-wide facts.

What to verify before installing any ROM
1. Make a restorable backup
Unlocking a bootloader commonly triggers a factory reset. The Pixel Experience installation guide explicitly warns that unlocking erases all device data and advises backing up first. Copy photos, messages, authenticator exports, contacts, documents, and app-specific backups to a separate location. Confirm that you can restore your two-factor-authentication accounts before wiping the phone.
2. Check bootloader eligibility
Some carrier and regional models cannot be unlocked through the manufacturer’s normal process. Verify eligibility for your exact model before downloading a ROM. Do not assume that an unlocked setting on one regional variant applies to another.
3. Gather the required firmware and recovery
Device guides can require a specific stock-firmware level, partition image, Android release, recovery, or sideload method. Use the versions named by the guide for your model. Mixing files from another codename or region is a common cause of failed boots and missing hardware.

4. Prepare a reliable computer connection
The inspected Pixel Experience guide requires connecting the phone to a computer over USB. Use a cable that supports data transfer—not a charge-only cable—and match the phone’s connector to the computer’s port. A cable cannot compensate for an incorrect firmware package, locked bootloader, or missing backup.

5. Plan for app and payment interruptions
Before wiping the phone, identify apps that enforce device-integrity checks, require hardware-backed security, or bind an account to the original installation. The available project documentation does not establish blanket support for banking, contactless payments, streaming DRM, or enterprise-management apps. Keep an alternative phone or recovery route until those apps work on your exact build.
How the installation risk appears in practice
The “lake” guide is an example, not a universal recipe
The Pixel Experience guide for Motorola’s “lake” device says to boot stock firmware and check basic functions first, connect the phone to a computer by USB, unlock the bootloader, and use the recommended recovery. It warns that unlocking erases all data, tells you to back up beforehand, provides the ROM without warranty, and places installation risk on the user. Read the complete guide at the lake installation page.
Those steps must not be copied to another Motorola model or another brand. Partition layouts, firmware, recovery commands, and reboot sequences differ. For LineageOS, use the current installation page linked from the exact device entry rather than applying a generic sequence from a forum post.

- Keep the original firmware or documented restoration path until the new installation has proven reliable.
Common failure modes and safer responses
The device is not listed
Do not substitute a build for a sister model. Your practical options are to remain on stock firmware, find a project that explicitly supports the exact device, or accept that a custom ROM is not presently a safe choice for that phone.

The bootloader will not unlock
Stop and identify whether the problem is a carrier restriction, regional model, account authorization, waiting period, or an incorrect command. Do not use unofficial bypass packages that promise to unlock an incompatible variant; they can create an unrecoverable state.
The phone boots but a key function fails
Test whether the problem is limited to one build, firmware level, or configuration. Recheck the device guide, restore the required stock firmware if instructed, and consult device-specific issue reports. A project-wide reputation cannot diagnose a modem, camera blob, sensor, or encryption problem on one model.
You are tempted to relock the bootloader
Do not relock or re-lock it merely to make the installation appear finished. Pixel Experience’s FAQ warns that recovery from a relocked bootloader may be impossible. Follow the device guide’s stated bootloader state and keep a tested recovery path.
The installation is complete but an app refuses to run
Record the ROM build, security-patch level, device state, and exact error. Check the app publisher’s requirements and your device project’s current documentation. Do not assume that changing ROMs will fix an integrity check, and do not treat a workaround as a security guarantee.
Which users should choose which option?
Choose LineageOS when all of these are true
- Your exact model and variant are on the current LineageOS device list.
- The device guide is current and its firmware and bootloader prerequisites are achievable.
- You want a maintained custom-ROM path rather than a historical build.
- You have a backup and a restoration plan.
- You have checked the specific hardware and apps that matter to you.
Consider an existing Pixel Experience installation only as legacy software
Keeping a historical installation may be reasonable while you arrange a migration, but the archived project status means you should not plan on continuing security or feature updates from it. Before changing anything, back up your data, verify that LineageOS or another actively maintained project supports the exact phone, and read that project’s current guide.
Choose neither when the prerequisites fail
If your model is unlisted, the bootloader cannot be unlocked, required firmware is unavailable, or your essential apps cannot tolerate the device state, staying on supported stock software is safer than forcing a ROM onto the phone. A custom ROM is optional; an unusable phone is not.
Maintaining the phone after installation
- Read each update’s device-specific notes before installing it.
- Keep a recent backup because an update can expose a pre-existing recovery problem.
- Re-test calls, mobile data, Wi-Fi, camera, Bluetooth, sensors, encryption, and your critical apps after major changes.
- Track the exact build and firmware versions so you can reproduce a working configuration.
- Keep the manufacturer restoration files and the official device guide available offline when possible.
- Never infer security support from an old download page; check whether the project is currently publishing updates for your model.
Bottom line
LineageOS is the sensible forward-looking comparison winner only conditionally: your exact phone must be officially supported, unlockable, and compatible with the current device guide. Pixel Experience’s official-device repository has been archived since April 10, 2024, so its online device pages should be read as historical documentation, not evidence of active maintenance. Verify the model, codename, firmware, bootloader, hardware functions, and essential apps before you wipe the phone; if any of those checks fail, do not flash.
