Choose LineageOS if you want a relatively direct custom-ROM foundation and are comfortable selecting your own apps and services. Choose /e/OS if you want a more curated, privacy-oriented system with microG, alternative default apps, built-in privacy controls and optional Murena cloud services. That recommendation is conditional: first verify the exact phone model and variant, current build status, bootloader requirements and the apps you cannot live without. Neither project can guarantee support for every handset or Google-dependent application.

Start with the phone, not the feature list

Android ROM support is model-specific. A ROM can be excellent in general and still be unavailable, incomplete or difficult to install on your particular phone. Before comparing launchers, privacy settings or app stores, identify the exact model number, regional variant, storage configuration and carrier edition. Then check each project’s live device information for that precise variant.

/e/OS distinguishes official builds from community builds and publishes device-specific information such as the Android base and bootloader state. It also makes its own support and discontinuation decisions rather than automatically following LineageOS. LineageOS has a published device-support charter, but meeting the charter does not mean every model is currently maintained. A broad statement such as “this brand works” is not enough.

A practical support check

  1. Open the current official device list for LineageOS and search the complete model identifier, not merely the phone’s marketing name.
  2. Search the /e/OS device selector for the same identifier and note whether the entry is official or community-maintained.
  3. Record the Android base, installation route, bootloader information and any model-specific warnings shown for each build.
  4. Check whether your carrier, camera configuration, NFC hardware and regional radio bands match the supported variant.
  5. Read the device guide all the way through before unlocking anything; unlocking normally erases the phone.

What LineageOS and /e/OS actually are

LineageOS: a flexible custom-ROM baseline

LineageOS is an Android-based operating-system project whose installation experience is intentionally close to a conventional custom ROM: you select a supported build, follow the device instructions and decide which additional packages and services to install. A LineageOS installation does not automatically give every user the same Google-service configuration. The selected build, optional packages and the apps you choose determine what is present.

The LineageOS Device Support Requirements document sets a baseline for official device support. It states, “All devices MUST support software encryption.” The requirements also address retaining capabilities such as cellular calling, Wi-Fi, GPS, camera and NFC when those capabilities exist in the stock operating system and meet the charter’s conditions. Those are project requirements, not a promise that every officially supported phone receives identical maintenance, camera quality or update timing.

This model suits people who want control over the system’s composition. You can use open-source applications, add a compatible service layer, or configure a different set of tools without adopting a single vendor’s account and cloud bundle. The trade-off is that more decisions, testing and troubleshooting remain yours.

/e/OS: a LineageOS/AOSP fork with an integrated product layer

/e/OS describes itself as a fork based on LineageOS and the Android Open Source Project, with substantial changes above the underlying platform. Its technical FAQ says, “We’ve integrated microG by default, have replaced some of the default applications, and modified others.” The project also changed installation procedures, settings organization and defaults.

The result is not simply LineageOS with a different wallpaper. /e/OS supplies its own launcher, open-source default applications, alternative service defaults, Advanced Privacy controls and parental controls. It also offers an account-linked service ecosystem for mail, contacts, calendar, notes, tasks and file synchronization. Murena Workspace or self-hosting are described as storage options, and the online services are optional rather than a requirement for using the operating system.

LineageOS vs. /e/OS at a glance

Decision area LineageOS /e/OS What it means for you
Project relationship Android custom-ROM project with published device requirements LineageOS/AOSP fork with additional system, app and service changes /e/OS keeps the LineageOS family resemblance but delivers a more curated default setup.
Device support Official builds must satisfy the project’s support charter; current model listings must be checked Separate support decisions, with official and community labels and device-specific data Compare the exact model and build, not a phone brand.
Google-service approach Your selected installation and any added packages determine Google components microG is integrated by default, with alternative defaults and services Neither choice guarantees that every Google-dependent app will work.
Included experience A comparatively direct custom-ROM baseline; you choose many apps and services Own launcher, modified or replaced defaults, privacy controls and optional account/cloud services /e/OS reduces setup decisions; LineageOS leaves more of them to you.
Privacy controls Depend on the build, installed apps and your configuration Project-documented tracker management, location faking and IP faking through Tor redirection Controls can reduce exposure, but they are not an independent privacy guarantee.
Essential-app compatibility Must be checked against your chosen setup microG can provide compatibility for some apps, while the project warns that apps needing the complete Google code base may fail Test banking, payments, DRM and push-dependent apps before migration.
Installation Follow the exact official guide for the device Supported devices may use a Chrome-based WebUSB installer or a command-line route Difficulty depends more on the handset and route than on the ROM’s name.
Bootloader state Check the model guide Some device/build combinations list bootloader-lock support Never assume a bootloader can be relocked safely across devices.

How the Google-service difference affects daily use

What “de-Googled” does and does not mean

In this context, de-Googled means reducing reliance on Google’s proprietary mobile-service stack and choosing alternatives where possible. It does not mean that a phone can never contact a Google endpoint. An app may communicate with Google directly, a user may install a Google-dependent application, or a network service may be required for a feature. Your privacy outcome depends on the operating system, installed software, permissions, network configuration and your choices.

LineageOS configuration

LineageOS gives you a relatively open starting point. You decide whether to install additional service packages, which app source to use and which synchronization or notification services to enable. That flexibility is useful if you already have a preferred combination, but it also means there is no single “LineageOS app compatibility” result. Two phones running LineageOS can behave differently because their service packages and app sets differ.

/e/OS and microG

/e/OS integrates microG by default and supplies alternative defaults intended to reduce dependence on Google’s proprietary components. microG can provide compatibility functions that some applications expect, but it is not a promise of complete equivalence with Google’s full code base. /e/OS explicitly warns that applications requiring the complete Google code base may not work.

Apps that deserve a pre-installation test

  • Banking and finance: device-integrity checks, proprietary push services or institution-specific restrictions can block sign-in or transactions.
  • Payments and transit: contactless payment frameworks and tokenized cards are particularly sensitive to service and certification requirements.
  • Streaming and DRM: protected video may depend on certification, DRM components or an approved device state.
  • Push-dependent communication: an app may open normally but deliver delayed or missing notifications.
  • Corporate tools: mobile-device management, work profiles and certificate policies can reject an altered operating system.
  • Games and safety-sensitive apps: integrity checks may treat an unlocked bootloader or modified system as unsupported.

Use the project’s current compatibility information, including its banking-app list where applicable, and test the exact apps on a spare device or after making a restorable backup. A compatibility list can change, so do not treat a past success report as a guarantee for a current build.

Privacy features: useful controls, not a ranking

What /e/OS documents

/e/OS documents an Advanced Privacy area with tracker management, location faking and IP faking. The project says IP faking redirects traffic through Tor. These controls can help you inspect or limit an application’s behavior, provide an approximate location instead of your real one and obscure the apparent source address for supported traffic.

The system also uses alternative defaults and offers optional account-linked services. If you use cloud synchronization, the privacy implications depend on the service configuration, account information, retention policy and whether you choose Murena Workspace or self-hosting. Turning on a privacy control can affect maps, local discovery, fraud checks, media delivery or other features that legitimately need location or network information.

What LineageOS provides in this comparison

The available evidence establishes LineageOS’s device requirements, not a complete, current inventory of every privacy feature in every build. A LineageOS phone’s privacy profile therefore depends heavily on the chosen applications, service packages, permissions, DNS or VPN configuration and update discipline. That flexibility can be an advantage for an experienced user, but it is not evidence that LineageOS is categorically more or less private than /e/OS.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to evaluate a privacy claim

  • Identify which component supplies the control: the operating system, an application, a network service or a cloud account.
  • Check what data still leaves the phone when the control is enabled.
  • Test whether the setting breaks a feature you need, such as navigation or emergency services.
  • Review permissions after major updates and when installing a replacement app.
  • Do not confuse fewer default integrations with a guarantee against tracking by every installed app.

User experience and ecosystem trade-offs

When LineageOS feels right

LineageOS is the better starting point when you want to assemble the phone yourself. You can keep the interface close to the project’s baseline, choose your own launcher, select individual replacements and decide whether to add synchronization, notification or service components. This is attractive to people who already know which compromises they accept and who are willing to diagnose an app or service that does not behave as expected.

When /e/OS feels right

/e/OS is aimed at a packaged end-user experience. Its launcher, modified defaults, microG integration, privacy controls and optional cloud account reduce the number of separate choices during setup. Someone moving from a conventional Android phone may prefer that the core applications and alternatives are presented as one coherent system.

The same integration can feel restrictive if you want a different launcher philosophy, a particular synchronization stack or complete control over each service layer. You can still install applications and make changes, but the starting assumptions are different from a minimal custom-ROM baseline.

Installation: plan for a device-specific procedure

Before touching the bootloader

  • Back up photos, messages, authenticator seeds, contacts, files and application data. Bootloader unlocking commonly wipes user data.
  • Confirm that you can recover account credentials and two-factor methods without the old installation.
  • Charge the phone, use a reliable cable and install the platform tools required by the exact guide.
  • Read whether the manufacturer permits unlocking for your regional variant and whether unlocking affects warranty or support.
  • Download the correct recovery, ROM and verification files for the exact model; never substitute a file for a visually similar variant.

/e/OS browser installer

On selected devices, /e/OS provides a browser-based installer. Its documentation says this route requires a Chrome-based browser with WebUSB support; Chrome is the example given. “Supported by /e/OS” does not necessarily mean “supported by the browser installer.” The installer’s device coverage and the command-line device coverage are separate questions.

/e/OS command-line route

/e/OS documents command-line installation for more than 200 devices. The exact commands, drivers, firmware sequence and bootloader steps vary by model, so use the guide for your phone rather than copying a procedure from another device. A command-line route may be the only option even when the operating system itself is supported.

LineageOS installation

LineageOS likewise requires the device’s own installation guide. The sequence can include unlocking, installing a recovery or boot image, verifying downloads, formatting or sideloading packages and completing a first boot. Do not infer the steps from another LineageOS model: partition layouts, firmware prerequisites and relock behavior differ.

What a successful installation should look like

  1. The phone boots into the new operating system without repeated crashes or a persistent setup loop.
  2. Mobile radio, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, camera, audio, charging and biometric hardware work as described for the build.
  3. The device reports the expected Android base and build information.
  4. Your essential apps install and perform their critical functions, not merely open to a login screen.
  5. Updates are offered through the project’s documented mechanism and recovery remains usable.

Updates, support and long-term maintenance

LineageOS requirements versus maintenance reality

The LineageOS charter defines capabilities and technical conditions for official releases, including software encryption and preservation of key stock features when applicable. It is not a comparative maintenance-speed metric and does not prove that every device receives the same level of attention. Check the current device page, recent build activity and the model’s known limitations before committing.

/e/OS support decisions

/e/OS says it is not dependent on LineageOS when deciding which devices to support or discontinue. It may apply security patches when those patches are available from the source. Its selector identifies official and community builds and shows device-specific Android bases and bootloader information. Those details can change, so record the date you checked them and revisit the page before installation.

Questions to ask before relying on a ROM

  • How often has this exact device received builds recently?
  • Which Android base does the current build use?
  • Are firmware updates supplied separately by the manufacturer?
  • Can you recover if an update fails, and is the recovery procedure documented?
  • Will the phone remain usable if the project drops the model?

Which ROM fits which reader?

Your priority More suitable first investigation Reason Condition
A hands-on custom-ROM setup LineageOS It provides a direct baseline and leaves service and app choices to you. You must be comfortable selecting, configuring and troubleshooting those additions.
Preconfigured alternatives and integrated microG /e/OS Its defaults, launcher, privacy tools and microG are assembled as one experience. Verify that your critical apps work with the available service layer.
Maximum choice of app and service combinations LineageOS You can build the environment instead of adopting a packaged cloud and app stack. There is no single compatibility profile; your configuration determines behavior.
Built-in tracker and location controls /e/OS The project documents tracker management, location faking and IP faking through Tor. Understand feature breakage and the limits of app-level controls.
A phone with no official build Neither yet A community build may exist, but support and maintenance require separate scrutiny. Do not install until you understand the maintainer, recovery path and update record.
Banking, payment or DRM-critical use Whichever passes your own tests Neither project guarantees Google-dependent app behavior. Test before wiping the stock system and keep a recovery plan.

A migration checklist that avoids the common surprises

  1. Write down the exact model and variant from the phone’s settings or chassis label.
  2. Check both official device sources and distinguish official from community support.
  3. List every essential app, including authentication, banking, payments, work tools, navigation and media.
  4. Check current compatibility information and test the highest-risk apps first.
  5. Export data and create an offline backup that you have actually opened and verified.
  6. Confirm bootloader-unlock eligibility, required firmware and whether unlocking erases data.
  7. Choose the correct installation route; do not assume the easy browser installer covers every supported device.
  8. Follow only the exact model guide and verify each downloaded file as instructed.
  9. After first boot, test radio, Wi-Fi, GPS, camera, NFC, notifications, calls and battery charging.
  10. Set up updates, recovery information and a rollback plan before using the phone as your only device.

Troubleshooting decision points

Your model is missing

Stop. Do not flash a build for a similar name or another regional variant. Recheck the identifier, carrier edition and storage model. If the phone still is not listed, investigate the maintainer and recovery process for any community build, or keep the stock system.

The browser installer cannot see the phone

Confirm that you are using a Chrome-based browser with WebUSB support, that the phone is in the mode required by its guide and that the cable and operating-system permissions allow USB access. If the model is supported only by the command-line route, switch to that documented procedure rather than treating the detection failure as a ROM defect.

An app installs but does not work

Separate installation from service dependency. Test sign-in, notifications, payments, location, media playback and background behavior. An app that requires the complete Google code base may remain unusable on /e/OS, and an identically named app can behave differently on LineageOS depending on the packages you installed. Look for an open-source or web alternative only after confirming that it meets your security and account needs.

The phone cannot be relocked

Do not force a relock. Bootloader-lock support is device- and build-specific, and /e/OS lists it only for some combinations. Relocking an unsupported configuration can leave the phone unable to boot. Follow the exact project and manufacturer instructions or keep the bootloader state documented for future recovery.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You want cloud synchronization but not a vendor account

Use local synchronization or a self-hosted option where supported, and understand which /e/OS features require an account. Optional cloud services are a design choice, not a reason to assume the entire operating system is cloud-free.

Bottom-line decision

Investigate LineageOS first when your priority is a flexible, hands-on custom-ROM foundation and you are prepared to choose the service layer yourself. Investigate /e/OS first when you want an integrated alternative stack with microG, a distinct launcher and default applications, documented privacy controls and optional Murena services. In both cases, the decisive evidence is the same: a current build for your exact device, a safe installation path and successful tests of the apps and hardware you rely on every day.
