LineageOS 24 is based on Android 17, according to the project’s Wiki. But that does not mean every phone can install it—or that every app will keep working. Check support for your exact device, verify the apps you depend on, and decide whether you want Google Apps before starting the installation.
What the Android 17 upgrade means
The LineageOS Wiki identifies LineageOS 24 as Android 17. That is the project’s version mapping, not a guarantee that Android 17 or LineageOS 24 is available for every phone. LineageOS support and installation requirements are specific to a device and sometimes its exact variant.
Android 17’s platform requirements likewise do not guarantee that third-party apps or services will accept a device running LineageOS. A shared Android version is not the same as universal app or service compatibility.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWill your apps still work on LineageOS?
LineageOS supports apps in the usual Android manner, but an app’s developer can choose to exclude LineageOS users. Compatibility therefore depends on the individual app and the device’s software state—not just the Android version number.

Before migrating, check the apps that would cause the most disruption if they failed: banking and payment apps, work or device-management apps, streaming services, and authenticator apps. Look for device-specific quirks in the relevant installation guide and test essential apps where possible before relying on the new setup. Do not assume that Play Integrity checks, DRM-protected playback, Google services, or a particular app will work on every LineageOS installation.
Choose whether to install Google Apps
Google Apps are optional and are not bundled with LineageOS. The LineageOS Wiki lists MindTheGapps packages for ARM and ARM64 for LineageOS 24; choose the package architecture specified for your device. The project’s documentation says, “The Google Apps packages are not supported in any way by LineageOS.”

If you want Google Apps, install the package in recovery immediately after installing LineageOS and before booting the new system. The official instructions warn that if you boot LineageOS first, you must factory-reset before installing Google Apps. A factory reset erases local data, so plan the sequence and back up important files before you begin.
Check your device before installing
Use the official device listings and the installation guide for your exact phone model and variant. A guide for one device is not evidence that a similar-looking or similarly named model is supported. Read the entire guide, including its quirks and prerequisites, before changing the phone.

- Confirm that the exact model and variant are listed for LineageOS 24.
- Check the guide’s required starting firmware, recovery, partition, and other device-specific conditions.
- Decide whether you want Google Apps and, if so, identify the architecture and installation sequence required for your device.
- Back up data you cannot afford to lose. Device installation and upgrade procedures can include a data wipe.
- Make sure you can follow the manual ADB and recovery steps in the device guide. If the workflow requires a computer connection, confirm that your cable supports data transfer and fits your phone.
Plan for a manual upgrade and possible data loss
The LineageOS cross-version upgrade guidance says the updater blocks upgrades to a different LineageOS version. Moving between versions therefore requires a manual process similar to a first installation, following the instructions for the specific device. Some device flows wipe data. Do not assume an over-the-air update will handle the version change or preserve everything.
Follow the current guide for your model rather than applying another device’s steps. If a prerequisite is unclear, stop before flashing or wiping and resolve it first; the requirements and supported-device status can change.

What Android 17 features do—and do not—tell you
Google says Android 17 rollout began with Pixel devices and was to continue to other eligible Android devices during 2026. Its Android 17 feature page also describes app memory limits intended to prevent individual apps from using too much RAM. Those platform details do not establish whether a particular LineageOS build includes a specific feature or how that feature behaves on a particular phone.
Android’s compatibility requirements describe expectations for Android implementations; they are not a promise that a third-party app, payment provider, employer, or streaming service will accept every custom-ROM device.
