LineageOS 24.0 is reported to be based on Android 17, and its new browser-based flashing tools may simplify some supported installation paths. Neither development means every older phone can run the ROM: compatibility depends on the exact model and codename, and the device’s own installation guide remains essential.
What LineageOS 24 changes
Android Authority reported on October 11, 2026, that LineageOS 24.0 is based on Android 17 and adds browser-based flash tools for ADB, Fastboot, Amlogic Burn, and Samsung Odin protocols. The report also describes new apps. These are reported release details; check the project’s current changelog for the authoritative feature list: Android Authority’s LineageOS 24 coverage.
A browser-based tool can make a supported flashing route more convenient, but it does not remove the technical steps or device-specific requirements. LineageOS still recommends following the installation guide for the exact device. Those guides can specify prerequisites such as the correct firmware and bootloader state, as well as instructions for connecting the phone to a computer: example device installation guide.
Will LineageOS 24 work on your phone?
Check the exact device entry on the LineageOS devices page. A phone being old, running Android, or supporting Google’s Android 17 testing images does not establish LineageOS 24 compatibility. The project’s device pages warn that unlisted devices are unsupported, and installation instructions are specific to each supported device.

- Identify the exact model and codename. Marketing names can cover more than one hardware variant; use the identifiers requested by the device page.
- Find that device on the official list. If it is not listed, do not treat a similar model or a third-party compatibility listing as confirmation of support.
- Open its current installation guide. Confirm that the guide applies to LineageOS 24 and read its prerequisites, including any required stock firmware or bootloader state.
- Decide whether you can complete the listed steps. A browser tool may help with a supported flashing protocol, but the guide may still require a computer, USB connection, and other device-specific actions.
A third-party device browser updated October 12, 2026, lists SHIFTphone 8.1 as an example of a LineageOS 24.0 device. That listing is not a complete official support list, so confirm any candidate device on the LineageOS devices page and follow its official guide. The third-party browser is available at LineageOS Device Browser.
What the browser-based flashing tools do—and do not do
The reported tools cover several flashing protocols: ADB, Fastboot, Amlogic Burn, and Samsung Odin. That can reduce friction for people whose device and installation route are supported by one of them. It is not a universal installer: the correct protocol, prerequisites, and sequence depend on the device’s official guide.

Google’s Android 17 Generic System Image (GSI) is intended for developer testing and validation on supported Treble-compliant devices. It is not a consumer promise that every older Treble phone can install LineageOS 24. A GSI and a device-specific LineageOS build are different things, so Google’s GSI availability is not evidence that a particular phone appears on the LineageOS support list. See Google’s Android 17 GSI release notes.

Google’s release listing describes a June 18, 2026 Android 17 GSI build with a June 2026 security patch level. That date and patch level refer to Google’s GSI build, not LineageOS 24: Google’s Generic System Image releases.
Reported kernel limitation and release details
Android Authority’s October 11 report says devices using Linux kernel 4.4 or 4.9 are limited to LineageOS 22.2. Because that limitation has not been confirmed here against the project’s official changelog, treat it as a reported restriction rather than a definitive rule for every device. For a particular phone, check its current official device page and the project changelog before deciding which release applies.

Secondary coverage has also reported a LineageOS 24 security-patch range from August 2025 through October 2026. That range should not be treated as verified release policy without confirmation from the official project release information. Do not substitute Google’s GSI patch level for LineageOS’s.
If your phone is not listed
If the official devices page has no entry for your exact model, LineageOS does not list it as supported. A similar model, an Android 17 GSI, or a third-party device browser entry cannot replace official support confirmation. Your practical next step is to use the phone’s existing supported software or consider a device only after confirming its exact model and current LineageOS 24 guide on the official pages.
