The best lightweight camera is the one that stays easy to carry after you add the lens you actually need. A small body can become a bulky kit with a long zoom, so compare complete setups—not body weight alone. The Canon EOS R50 is a well-documented interchangeable-lens starting point; a compact video-focused camera such as the Fujifilm X-M5 may suit a different creator, but its viewfinder and stabilization trade-offs matter.

How to compare lightweight cameras fairly

Camera weight figures are useful only when you know what they include. Check whether the stated weight is for the body alone or includes a battery, card, and lens. For travel, compare the body plus the lens you expect to carry, and consider whether you will also pack a second lens.

Before choosing, match the camera to your shooting habits:

  • Lens and total kit weight: A versatile zoom may save you from changing lenses, but it adds weight and bulk. A longer lens reaches distant subjects but makes a kit less compact.
  • Viewfinder and screen: A viewfinder can be helpful in bright conditions. A vari-angle screen is useful for self-recording and awkward shooting angles.
  • Stabilization: Check whether stabilization is in the camera body, lens, or video processing. These approaches are not interchangeable in every situation.
  • Autofocus: Consider whether the camera tracks the people, animals, or vehicles you plan to photograph. Manufacturer feature descriptions are not a substitute for comparative testing.
  • Video demands: Look beyond resolution to frame rates, recording duration, and heat limits. Casual short clips place different demands on a camera than extended recording.
  • System growth: With an interchangeable-lens camera, consider the availability, cost, and weight of lenses you might want later.

Two useful options—and their trade-offs

Canon EOS R50: a documented lightweight interchangeable-lens option

Canon Australia lists the EOS R50 at 375 g and specifies a 24.2 MP APS-C CMOS sensor, 4K 30p video, a 3-inch vari-angle touchscreen, and SD UHS-II card support. It accepts RF and RF-S lenses, and EF or EF-S lenses when used with an adapter. Canon describes tracking for humans, animals, and vehicles; that is a manufacturer-stated feature, not an independent comparison result. Canon Australia’s EOS R50 specifications provide the regional product details.

Kodak PIXPRO FZ55 16MP Compact Digital Camera, 5X Optical Zoom, Black
  • 16MP Sensor: Captures detailed photos with a CMOS sensor for everyday shooting
  • Optical Zoom: 5x optical zoom with a 28mm wide angle lens for flexible framing indoors or outdoors
  • Full HD Video: Records 1080p video for travel clips, family moments, or simple vlogging
  • Memory Support: Works with Class 10 SD, SDHC, or SDXC cards up to 512GB
  • Rechargeable Battery: Included LB-012 lithium-ion battery charges in the camera over USB with the supplied adapter in about 2 hours; charge it for at least 4 hours before first use to maximize battery life

Canon Australia lists a kit with the RF-S 18-45mm f/4.5-6.3 IS STM lens and a twin kit that adds the RF-S 55-210mm f/5-7.1 IS STM. The additional reach can help with distant subjects, but the extra lens increases the size and weight of the carried setup. Treat Canon’s 375 g figure as the published camera weight, not the weight of either complete kit. Canon calls the camera a “perfect travel companion”; that phrase is promotional language, not a neutral test finding.

For stills and short travel clips, the R50’s listed features make it a practical option to investigate. For longer 4K sessions, Tom’s Guide cautions that it may overheat during extended recording, so it is prudent to distinguish occasional clips from sustained video work. Tom’s Guide’s EOS R50 review discusses that limitation.

Fujifilm X-M5: compact video capability with compromises

TechRadar describes the Fujifilm X-M5 as a compact camera suited to travel video and notes its 6K/open-gate capability. The same guide points out that it has neither a viewfinder nor in-body image stabilization. Those omissions may be acceptable if compact video capture is the priority, but they are meaningful drawbacks for photographers who want to compose through a viewfinder or rely on stabilization in the body. See TechRadar’s X-M5 review for its assessment.

Why this is not a verified top-five ranking

A credible five-camera ranking needs consistent, current evidence for every model: regional availability, body and kit weights, compatible lenses, stabilization, viewfinder, video limits, and price. The available model-specific support is strongest for the EOS R50, with comparative editorial context for the X-M5; it does not establish those details across five cameras. Adding three more names without that verification would make the list look more complete than the evidence allows.

Use the two options above as different starting points, not as a universal ranking. If your main need is a particular combination—such as a viewfinder, in-body stabilization, or long recording sessions—check the manufacturer’s current specifications for the exact model and region before deciding.
