Lightmatter unveiled an Open Rack co-packaged-optics switch tray that claims up to 204.8 Tbps of scale-up switching bandwidth in one rack unit (1RU). The liquid-cooled system was shown with Flex at the Open Compute Project Global Summit on October 12, 2026.
This is a production-validation and demonstration platform for AI infrastructure, not a retail networking switch. Lightmatter has not published a price, shipping date, or ordinary buyer-availability plan.
What Lightmatter announced
The system is an Open Rack switch tray designed for scale-up networks inside AI factories. Scale-up links connect accelerators and other tightly coupled compute resources, where bandwidth, optical I/O count, laser power, cooling capacity, fiber routing and front-panel space can all become rack-level constraints.
Lightmatter says the tray compresses the optical bandwidth normally spread across a two-to-four-rack-unit design into a single 1RU enclosure. Flex is the manufacturing and integration collaborator named in the announcement. The company presented the tray as a production-validation system, so the announcement demonstrates an intended architecture rather than confirming a generally orderable product.

How the 1RU design reaches its bandwidth target
Eight Passage photonic engines
The tray integrates eight Passage co-packaged-optics (CPO) BiDi engines. Passage is Lightmatter’s three-dimensional photonic-interconnect platform, which places optical connectivity close to switching or compute silicon instead of relying solely on longer electrical paths across a chassis.
Lightmatter’s product documentation lists Passage L200 CPO variants with 32 Tbps and 64 Tbps of aggregate bandwidth, and Passage L20 with 12.8 Tbps. Those figures describe documented Passage variants; the October announcement does not identify which specific L200 or L20 configuration maps to every engine in the validation tray.

Guide DR liquid-cooled laser modules
The optical engines are driven by Guide DR liquid-cooled laser modules in a liquid-cooled chassis. Guide DR uses a Laser Network Interface Card (LNIC) form factor intended to fit dozens of lasers in an OCP NIC 3.0-sized module.

Lightmatter says one Guide DR module is designed to drive up to 51.2 Tbps of aggregate CPO or NPO scale-up bandwidth. Four modules therefore provide the arithmetic basis for the tray’s claimed capacity. The company contrasts this arrangement with a larger 4RU chassis populated with liquid-cooled external laser small-form-factor pluggable (ELSFP) lasers.

Detachable vClick optical connections
For serviceability, Lightmatter says it developed vClick optics with SENKO. The detachable connector incorporates SENKO’s SEAT and Metallic Pic Coupler technologies. A detachable optical interface can allow optical assemblies to be serviced or replaced without treating the entire photonic package as a permanently inaccessible assembly, an important consideration when CPO equipment is deployed in dense racks.

The companion XPU tray illustrates the intended rack-scale architecture: a 2RU compute tray with four accelerators connected through high-bandwidth optical scale-up, alongside the denser 1RU optical switch. The two figures describe different pieces of the system and should not be added together as one switch specification.

Why this density matters for AI factories
As accelerator clusters grow, the limiting resource is not always the number of switching ports. Rack designers must also provide enough laser power, cooling, fiber lanes and physical front-panel openings to connect those ports. Moving more optical capability into a smaller liquid-cooled tray can free rack positions for compute or memory and shorten the physical path between switching and accelerator trays.
The claimed consolidation also changes maintenance planning. A design based on external laser modules and a 4RU chassis consumes more vertical space and may require more front-panel fiber management. Guide DR’s NIC-sized form factor and vClick’s detachable connection are intended to address those service and density issues, although the announcement does not provide field-replacement procedures, thermal limits, power consumption, or independent service data.

Is the 204.8 Tbps switch available to buy?
There is no confirmed retail SKU, public price, shipping date or standard procurement channel for the tray in the October 2026 material. The announcement identifies a validation system built with Flex, which is different from announcing volume production for general customers.
Organizations evaluating the design would need to engage Lightmatter and its integration partners about qualification status, rack and liquid-cooling requirements, optical cabling, control software, interoperability, service procedures and production schedules. The published material does not establish customer deployments or independent benchmark results.
