A Polish-Peruvian archaeological team has mapped about 1.5 miles of previously undocumented pre-Columbian roads beneath dense cloud forest near the Mandor Wall, across the Urubamba River from Machu Picchu. Airborne or drone-mounted LiDAR also revealed terraces and platforms that were not part of the earlier map of the complex.

The discovery is important because it places substantial infrastructure on the opposite riverbank, supporting a picture of Machu Picchu as the center of a connected territory rather than an isolated mountaintop compound. The roads are being described as potentially Inca, but their construction dates and exact relationship to the principal Inca road system remain unconfirmed.

What was found near Machu Picchu?

A road network across the Urubamba River

The mapped routes lie near the Mandor Wall, on the side of the Urubamba River opposite Machu Picchu’s citadel. Reports from the University of Warsaw Center for Andean Studies in 2026 attribute the mapping to a Polish-Peruvian team. In total, the researchers identified roughly 1.5 miles of roads hidden beneath forest that had not appeared in the previous picture of the complex.

The routes lead toward terraces and raised platforms. Those features could represent agricultural, residential, ceremonial or logistical activity, but their functions have not yet been established through excavation. The discovery therefore adds physical evidence of activity beyond the famous citadel without, by itself, defining how every feature was used.

A prominent zigzag section

One section extends for about 0.75 miles in a switchback or zigzag alignment. Futura-Sciences reported that this form is characteristic of Inca road engineering on steep slopes. The wider area is nearly 8,000 feet above sea level, where a direct climb would be difficult and a controlled series of bends could reduce the effective gradient.

How LiDAR exposed roads hidden by jungle

Laser pulses create a terrain model

LiDAR instruments send hundreds of thousands of laser pulses toward the ground. Some pulses travel through small gaps between leaves and branches and return from the soil, stonework and other surfaces below the canopy. Software separates vegetation returns from ground returns, producing a terrain model in which walls, paths, terraces and platforms can become visible without first removing the forest.

In this case, the instrument was carried by an aircraft or drone. That approach lets archaeologists examine steep, heavily wooded terrain from above and identify patterns that can be difficult to recognize during a ground walk. LiDAR does not photograph a road in the ordinary sense; it detects changes in elevation and surface structure that may indicate human construction.

Why the method changed the map

Dense cloud forest can hide linear earthworks from people on the ground, particularly when roots, leaf litter and uneven slopes cover the original surface. A digital terrain model can reveal a long alignment, a sequence of switchbacks or a terrace system across a much larger area than a small clearing survey. The newly mapped routes were therefore detectable before a major campaign of vegetation clearance or excavation.

Are the newly mapped roads really Inca?

What supports the preliminary attribution

The zigzag alignment is consistent with known Inca solutions for steep terrain, and the roads connect visually with terraces and platforms in a landscape already associated with Machu Picchu. Those clues make an Inca-period interpretation plausible. They do not prove that every mapped segment was built by the Inca state, however.

What has not been dated

The reports do not provide a confirmed construction date. Researchers plan field checks, targeted excavation, documentation of construction techniques, and analysis of soil or charcoal. Radiometric or other dating methods will be needed before the routes can be assigned a secure chronology.

It is also not yet known whether all of the segments joined the principal Inca road system. Some could have served a local farm network or connected individual terraces and platforms. A road’s visual style can suggest an engineering tradition, but dating and physical connections are required to establish its age and administrative role.

How the discovery changes the Machu Picchu story

More than 60 archaeological monuments are already linked by the wider park road network, according to CRBC and Popular Mechanics coverage. The newly mapped routes extend that infrastructure to the far side of the Urubamba, strengthening the case for a territorial complex of roads, agricultural areas, terraces, platforms and satellite sites.

Comparison Newly mapped routes Previously documented Machu Picchu infrastructure
Detection method Airborne or drone-mounted LiDAR followed by interpretation of a vegetation-filtered terrain model Ground survey and earlier archaeological documentation
Physical setting Cloud forest near the Mandor Wall, across the Urubamba River from the citadel The established network around the known Machu Picchu complex
Engineering clue A roughly 0.75-mile zigzag or switchback segment Specific comparable form is not stated in the reports summarized here
Connected features Terraces and platforms not previously included in the complex’s mapped picture More than 60 monuments linked by the wider park road network
Evidence status Preliminary remote mapping; excavation and dating are pending Parts of the established network have archaeological documentation, including excavated and dated evidence
Public location information Precise coordinates are being withheld Known visitor and research areas have established access and protection controls

This broader geography matters because it changes the question from “What happened inside the citadel?” to “How did people move, farm and organize the surrounding landscape?” The new evidence does not answer that question completely, but it supplies routes and built surfaces that can be tested against it.

Why officials are keeping the location secret

The research team and Peruvian authorities are withholding precise coordinates to reduce the risk of looting and unauthorized exploration. Newly identified archaeological sites can be damaged quickly by digging, removal of stones, informal trails or uncontrolled visitation. Keeping the exact position private allows specialists to document vulnerable features before access expands.

Withholding coordinates also means that independent visitors cannot currently verify the full route from a public map. The absence of a detailed public location is a preservation measure, not evidence that the roads are fictional or inaccessible to qualified archaeological work.

What archaeologists will do next

  1. Ground-truth the LiDAR traces: Teams will walk selected sections to confirm that linear features correspond to constructed roads rather than natural erosion or modern disturbance.
  2. Clear and excavate targeted areas: Limited vegetation removal and excavation can expose paving, retaining walls, drainage, steps and road edges while minimizing damage to the forest.
  3. Document construction methods: Stone arrangement, foundations, retaining structures and surface materials can show whether different sections were built in the same tradition or at different times.
  4. Determine platform functions: Excavated deposits and structural layouts may distinguish agricultural terraces from residential, ceremonial or storage areas.
  5. Obtain dates: Suitable charcoal, soil sequences or other datable material will be analyzed with radiometric or complementary methods to establish when the routes were built, modified or abandoned.
  6. Reconstruct connections: Researchers can then test whether the roads formed a continuous link to the principal Inca network or mainly served local terraces and farms.

Mariusz Ziółkowski, director of the University of Warsaw’s Center for Andean Studies, said in CRBC News coverage published September 4, 2026: “This discovery complements and significantly revises hypotheses regarding the functioning of the entire complex.” That revision is currently a research direction, not a final historical conclusion; the chronology, full geometry and role of the roads depend on the field and dating work still ahead.
