For the most reliable exchange with Microsoft Office users, change LibreOffice’s per-app defaults to Word 2007–365 (.docx), Excel 2007–365 (.xlsx), and PowerPoint 2007–365 (.pptx) in Tools > Options > Load/Save > General (or LibreOffice > Preferences on macOS). Keep an OpenDocument (ODF) master while you work, export an Office-format copy for recipients, and open that copy in Microsoft Office whenever the layout or calculations matter.
These settings reduce avoidable format prompts, but they cannot guarantee identical rendering. Complex layouts, advanced spreadsheet features, multimedia, tracked revisions, and VBA still need a deliberate check.
1. Set Microsoft formats as LibreOffice’s defaults
LibreOffice chooses a default save type separately for Writer, Calc, and Impress. Changing Writer’s setting does not change Calc or Impress. The selected type becomes the default for future saves; Save As still lets you choose another format for an individual file.
Open the Load/Save settings
- Open LibreOffice.
- On Windows or Linux, choose Tools > Options. On macOS, choose LibreOffice > Preferences.
- Expand Load/Save and select General.
- Under Default File Format and ODF Settings, choose the document type you want for the current module.
- Select Always save as, choose the Microsoft format, and select OK.
Repeat the procedure while the relevant module is active. The format list is context-sensitive, so configure Writer, Calc, and Impress independently.

Writer: choose Word 2007–365 (.docx)
In Writer’s default-format menu, select Word 2007–365. New Writer documents will then use the DOCX format when you save them. This is the appropriate exchange format when recipients edit in supported Microsoft Word versions.
Calc: choose Excel 2007–365 (.xlsx)
In Calc, select Excel 2007–365. Formulas, charts, named ranges, and formatting can still behave differently after conversion, so use the validation procedure below for important workbooks.
Impress: choose PowerPoint 2007–365 (.pptx)
In Impress, select PowerPoint 2007–365. Review slide spacing, grouped objects, fonts, transitions, audio, and video in PowerPoint before presenting.
Why OOXML is usually the right recipient format
Microsoft Support identifies Open XML (.docx, .xlsx, and .pptx) as the default format in supported Office versions and recommends it unless there is a specific reason to use another format. LibreOffice Help confirms that it can open and save Microsoft Office Open XML files. Choosing these types avoids making an Office recipient perform a separate conversion.

2. Keep an ODF master and export a delivery copy
Microsoft-format files are best treated as exchange copies, not as the only editable source. Save an ODF master—.odt for Writer, .ods for Calc, or .odp for Impress—while you continue editing in LibreOffice. Then use File > Save a Copy or File > Save As to create the DOCX, XLSX, or PPTX version.
- Use a clear pair of names such as
Budget_master.odsandBudget_for_Office.xlsx. - Make substantive edits in the ODF master, then regenerate the Office copy.
- Do not overwrite the master with a file that has already made a round trip through another application.
- Send the Office-format copy when the recipient needs to edit in Microsoft Office; send PDF only when fixed appearance is more important than editing.
This workflow preserves LibreOffice features that have no exact OOXML equivalent and gives you a clean source if a conversion changes layout or formulas.
3. Tune Writer’s Compatibility options for Word-like layout
Writer includes a Compatibility page with document-layout behaviors that can reduce differences between Writer and Word. Open it from Tools > Options > LibreOffice Writer > Compatibility (or the corresponding Preferences path on macOS), review the choices, and apply them to the document that needs them.
Spacing and pagination
Review options for Word-compatible paragraph and table spacing, including how spacing is handled at the start of a page. Word and Writer can place a heading, table, or paragraph differently when “space above” is collapsed or retained at a page break. If a DOCX opens with headings shifted or a table beginning on a different page, inspect these settings before changing every paragraph manually.

Trailing blanks and line-height behavior
Compatibility controls can alter how trailing spaces and line height are interpreted. These details matter in forms, fixed-line templates, and documents whose page count must remain stable. Use the compatibility behavior consistently within a document rather than mixing manual line breaks with changing paragraph settings.
Font metrics, text grids, and Asian text
Writer can use compatibility metrics for text grids and Asian-language text. Different font metrics change the width of lines and the number of lines that fit on a page. If a DOCX uses a text grid or CJK typography, verify that the intended fonts are installed on both computers and review the Compatibility choices before adjusting margins or font sizes.
Document-specific behavior
Some Compatibility options are stored with the document rather than acting as a universal LibreOffice preference. Imported DOCX files may enable certain flags automatically. Therefore, compare the setting in the problem document, not only in a blank Writer template, and expect a setting change to affect that file’s pagination.

4. Handle VBA macros separately from file-format defaults
Saving as DOCX or XLSX does not make LibreOffice fully compatible with Microsoft VBA. Macro preservation and macro execution are separate decisions.

Preserve unchanged Microsoft Basic code
- Open Tools > Options > Load/Save > VBA Properties.
- Enable Save original Basic code when you need unchanged Microsoft VBA to survive a round trip.
- Save a copy in the Office format and test it in the Microsoft application that will run the macro.
Preserving the original code is useful when LibreOffice is acting as a file editor and Microsoft Office remains the execution environment. It does not prove that the macro can run in LibreOffice.
Enable execution only intentionally
The Executable code option is for cases where you deliberately need limited VBA execution in LibreOffice. LibreOffice documents that VBA support is incomplete; code may require edits and may need to be rewritten against LibreOffice Basic objects, statements, and functions. Treat unfamiliar macros as untrusted code, keep macro security enabled for ordinary documents, and never use execution as a substitute for testing.
5. Know which content is most likely to change
Compatibility depends on what the file contains, not only on its extension. Use this risk map to decide how much checking is required.

LibreOffice identifies these areas as conversion risks. A simple text document usually needs less checking than a complex, object-heavy file, but there is no universal compatibility percentage that can predict the result for every document.

6. Use a repeatable export-and-validation workflow
- Finish the ODF master. Save and close it before creating the delivery copy.
- Export to the recipient’s format. Use DOCX, XLSX, or PPTX according to the application the recipient uses.
- Close and reopen the exported file in LibreOffice. This catches warnings and obvious object loss before delivery.
- Open the same copy in Microsoft Office. Use the desktop or web edition available to the recipient, because rendering can differ between editions.
- Check the material elements. For Writer, inspect page breaks, tables, headings, revisions, and embedded objects. For Calc, recalculate formulas and inspect charts, pivots, conditional formatting, and print areas. For Impress, run the slide show and test every grouped object and media item.
- Correct the master, not just the exported copy. If you change margins or formulas in the Office copy, repeat the change in the ODF master and export again.
- Deliver the validated copy with its extension intact. Do not rename an ODT, ODS, or ODP file to look like an Office file.
When you cannot access Microsoft Office
Ask the recipient to perform a final check, or provide a PDF preview alongside the editable file so they can identify visual differences quickly. A PDF preview does not validate formulas, macros, animations, or editability; it only provides a fixed visual reference.
7. Update LibreOffice before troubleshooting compatibility
Use the current maintenance release available for your deployment. LibreOffice 26.8.1, published on October 2, 2026, lists fixes for DOCX table-of-contents hyperlinks, text alignment and line spacing, XLSX drawing objects and database ranges, and PPTX files that could previously close Impress. Updating will not eliminate every conversion difference, but it can remove defects already corrected by the project.
After updating, reopen and re-export a file rather than judging compatibility from an older Office copy. Keep the older copy for comparison if a deadline requires rollback.
8. Troubleshoot common symptoms
“It still saves as ODT/ODS/ODP.”
- Confirm that you changed the setting in the correct module; each application has its own default.
- Check that Always save as is selected, not merely a one-time format in Save As.
- Use Save As once to verify the chosen extension, then close and create a new test document.
“The DOCX page count changed.”
- Open the document’s Writer Compatibility page.
- Check paragraph/table spacing, page-start spacing, trailing blanks, line-height behavior, and font metrics.
- Confirm that the same fonts are installed in both environments.
- Re-export from the ODF master and recheck page breaks in Word.
“The XLSX opens, but charts or formulas look wrong.”
- Recalculate in Excel and compare key results with the ODF master.
- Inspect pivot tables, newer chart types, conditional formatting, database ranges, and drawing objects individually.
- Replace unsupported or application-specific features with simpler equivalents when the recipient must edit the workbook.
“The PPTX opens with shifted text or missing media.”
- Check for font substitution and text overflow first.
- Ungroup or rebuild objects that depend on application-specific positioning.
- Play the entire presentation on the target computer and verify audio, video, transitions, and presenter controls.
“The macro is present but does not run.”
Verify whether the original VBA code was preserved, then test it in Microsoft Office. If it must run in LibreOffice, expect code changes because VBA support is incomplete; preserving code alone does not provide execution compatibility.

10. Practical compatibility checklist
- Set Writer to Word 2007–365, Calc to Excel 2007–365, and Impress to PowerPoint 2007–365 under Load/Save > General.
- Keep an ODF master for ongoing LibreOffice editing.
- Review Writer Compatibility settings for spacing, page starts, trailing blanks, font metrics, text grids, Asian text, and line height.
- Decide separately whether VBA should be preserved or executed.
- Update LibreOffice, including maintenance fixes such as those in 26.8.1.
- Validate the exported copy in Microsoft Office when layout, calculations, revisions, media, or macros matter.
- Tell recipients which file is the editable Office copy and which is the ODF master.
