For everyday desktop documents, spreadsheets, and presentations, LibreOffice is a practical open-source alternative to Microsoft 365: it is actively maintained and can export files in Microsoft Office formats. Its appeal is its straightforward desktop workflow, not proof that it is objectively more reliable or better than every other suite.
What “boring” means in this comparison
Here, “boring” means choosing a conventional desktop office suite for familiar tasks instead of treating an office app as an entire productivity platform. LibreOffice is suited to working with files on a computer; it is not, by itself, a replacement for every service bundled with Microsoft 365.
The LibreOffice project’s comparison page says the suite has regular releases with security updates. It lists version 26.8 as its latest major release, dated August 26, 2026. That supports calling it actively maintained, but does not establish comparative reliability or prove it is better than other office suites. The Document Foundation’s LibreOffice comparison page also describes improved Microsoft Office compatibility; that is the project’s own characterization, not an independent compatibility test.

For many ordinary document, spreadsheet, and presentation workflows, LibreOffice may be enough. It lists export to DOCX, XLSX, and PPTX, which can help when exchanging files with people using Microsoft Office. Export support alone does not guarantee that a complex file will look or behave identically after editing.

Test the files that matter
- Make a copy of a representative DOCX, XLSX, or PPTX file before opening or editing it.
- Check the elements your work depends on, such as layout, formulas, charts, fonts, or presentation effects.
- Save a copy in the relevant Microsoft format, then reopen it in the software your recipients use if possible.
- For critical documents, spreadsheets, or presentations, compare the result with the original before switching your regular workflow.
This is especially important when a file is complex or must retain exact formatting and behavior. The available product documentation does not establish a universal fidelity rate.
When LibreOffice is not a Microsoft 365 replacement
Microsoft 365 includes services beyond desktop office applications. If your requirement is browser-based co-editing, shared files, email, calendar, or broader team collaboration, a desktop suite alone does not meet it. Decide first whether you need only to edit office files or also need a platform for people and shared work.

Collaboration through a separate platform
For self-hosted collaboration, Nextcloud documents two office-editing options in its Server 35 administration manual: Nextcloud Office, powered by Euro-Office, and Collabora Online. The manual says both support common Microsoft Office and OpenDocument formats. This approach adds a platform and deployment decision; it is not simply a feature that comes with installing LibreOffice. See Nextcloud’s Office documentation for Server 35.

Document-server and conversion considerations
The ONLYOFFICE guide for Nextcloud requires a Document Server. It also describes converting non-OOXML files for editing and warns that converting them back may lose data or formatting. If you consider this kind of browser-based setup, retain originals and test important files through the full editing and return-conversion process.
