There is no evidence-based universal winner between LG and Samsung refrigerators. The strongest current U.S. data measures different things: Consumer Reports identifies configuration-specific problem patterns, J.D. Power reports reliability in problems per 100 appliances (PP100) and separately measures owner satisfaction. Samsung leads LG in J.D. Power’s 2026 satisfaction scores for French-door and side-by-side refrigerators, while the 2025 J.D. Power reliability release supplies LG refrigerator PP100 figures but no directly comparable Samsung refrigerator figure. Your best choice therefore depends on the exact model, installation fit, ice and water system, warranty terms, and authorized service available at your ZIP code.

This comparison applies to U.S. products and studies. Warranty coverage, model names, service networks, and consumer-protection rules can differ in other countries.

What the available evidence actually measures

“Reliable” can mean fewer reported problems, fewer service visits, a refrigerator that keeps food cold for many years, or an owner who is satisfied despite occasional repairs. The major studies cited here do not measure the same outcome or the same ownership period, so combining their numbers into one brand score would be misleading.

Consumer Reports refrigerator reliability survey, updated September 22, 2026 French-door, side-by-side, and bottom-freezer LG models were more likely to have compressor problems than models from most other brands in the survey. Samsung French-door models received poor predicted-reliability and owner-satisfaction ratings in the survey. These are configuration-level survey observations, not a prediction for every model.
Consumer Reports icemaker estimate, 2026 30 percent of refrigerators with icemakers were estimated to have a problem by the end of the fifth year in the survey context. The estimate covers refrigerators with icemakers generally, not a specific LG or Samsung model.
J.D. Power U.S. Appliance Reliability & Service Study, 2025 68 PP100 for side-by-side refrigerators and 74 PP100 for French-door refrigerators. Samsung’s refrigerator PP100 was not listed in the release’s category summaries. Lower PP100 means fewer reported problems. The release cannot establish a complete LG-versus-Samsung reliability winner.
J.D. Power U.S. Appliance Satisfaction Study, 2026 722 for French-door and 742 for side-by-side refrigerators. 733 for French-door and 750 for side-by-side refrigerators. These are satisfaction scores, not failure rates or expected lifespans.

The reliability study covered appliances bought within the preceding one to three years and collected 12,755 reliability responses plus 1,419 service responses online in June and July 2025. The satisfaction study used 28,411 evaluations of appliances purchased in the prior 12 months and was fielded from April 2025 through April 2026. Consumer Reports’ survey covered 85,290 refrigerators with icemakers purchased new between 2016 and 2026. Different samples and time windows explain why the results should be read side by side rather than averaged.

Reliability: judge the configuration before the logo

French-door refrigerators

French-door designs put the refrigerator compartment at eye level and the freezer below. They commonly include through-the-door water or ice, multiple electronic controls, and one or more icemakers. Consumer Reports found poor predicted-reliability and owner-satisfaction ratings for Samsung French-door models, while its LG finding focused on a higher likelihood of compressor problems than models from most other brands. Neither observation means every French-door unit from either manufacturer will fail in that way.

J.D. Power’s 2025 reliability release placed LG at 74 PP100 in the French-door category. Samsung’s category value was not supplied in the release summary, so there is no like-for-like PP100 comparison from that source. If a retailer or review presents the LG figure as proof that LG beats Samsung, check whether it has introduced a Samsung number from a different study or year.

Side-by-side refrigerators

Side-by-side models offer narrow vertical compartments and often make it easier to reach frozen food without bending. Their ice and water dispensers can be convenient but add valves, sensors, tubing, and controls that may need service. LG recorded 68 PP100 in J.D. Power’s 2025 side-by-side reliability category. The release did not provide Samsung’s corresponding refrigerator PP100 in the category summary.

Bottom-freezer refrigerators

Consumer Reports included LG bottom-freezer models among configurations with a higher likelihood of compressor problems than models from most other brands. That is a survey pattern, not a diagnosis of a particular compressor design or a guarantee about a current model. Samsung bottom-freezer data was not provided in the cited summaries, so compare current model documentation and independent ratings rather than inferring a brand result.

Icemakers and dispensers are a separate risk decision

Consumer Reports identifies icemakers and water or ice dispensers as among the most commonly reported refrigerator problems. Its 2026 estimate says 30 percent of refrigerators with icemakers may have a problem by the end of year five, within that survey’s population and methodology. An internal ice maker, dual ice makers, a door dispenser, and a filtered-water system each add components. If you rarely use ice, a simpler configuration can remove potential failure points; if you need high ice volume, budget for filters and eventual repairs rather than assuming the feature is maintenance-free.

J.D. Power’s 2025 release also reports higher average problem rates among connected appliances across the appliance categories it studied. That is a cross-category finding, not a refrigerator-specific LG or Samsung failure rate. A Wi-Fi feature should therefore be purchased for a real convenience, not treated as evidence of better or worse refrigeration performance.

Satisfaction is useful, but it is not reliability

Samsung scored higher than LG in both refrigerator segments reported by J.D. Power’s 2026 satisfaction study: French-door owners rated Samsung 733 and LG 722, while side-by-side owners rated Samsung 750 and LG 742. Satisfaction can reflect layout, appearance, controls, noise, delivery, and how an owner feels about a repair as well as whether a component failed. It does not tell you how long a compressor will last or how often an icemaker will need attention.

Michael Taylor, J.D. Power’s senior managing director of retail practice, summarized the trade-off this way: “With that increased level of complexity, however, comes a greater potential for issues, which puts a spotlight on reliability as a critical factor in the customer experience and a key driver of brand loyalty.” The practical implication is to assess each feature’s value against the additional parts and controls it introduces.

Compare exact LG and Samsung models, not broad product families

Brand-level claims hide major differences in capacity, depth, dispenser design, compressor system, controls, and warranty language. Build a like-for-like shortlist: the same door configuration, approximately the same capacity, similar depth, and comparable ice and water equipment.

1. Confirm the physical fit

  1. Measure the opening’s width at the top, middle, and bottom; record height under cabinets and depth to the wall or counter.
  2. Read the manufacturer’s installation drawing for the candidate model, including required side, top, and rear clearances.
  3. Measure the path from the delivery vehicle to the kitchen. Include stair turns, doorways, elevator limits, and the refrigerator’s carton dimensions.
  4. Check door-swing and drawer clearance with adjacent cabinets and islands. A counter-depth cabinet fit does not guarantee that doors or freezer drawers can open fully.
  5. Confirm that the home has the required grounded electrical outlet and, for a plumbed dispenser or icemaker, an accessible water connection and shutoff valve.

Do not compare a counter-depth model with a standard-depth model simply because both are advertised at a similar cubic-foot capacity. Usable storage, exterior projection, and ventilation space can differ substantially.

2. Match capacity and layout

Record total capacity and the split between fresh-food and freezer compartments. Shelves that slide, fold, or move can matter more than a small difference in advertised volume. Note whether the freezer uses drawers or shelves, whether bins are adjustable, and whether a wide tray can hold the items your household actually buys.

3. Inventory ice and water hardware

Write down the number and location of icemakers, whether ice is made in the door or compartment, dispenser type, filter model, and whether the refrigerator can operate without a water connection. More ice capacity can be valuable for a large household, but every additional assembly adds maintenance considerations. Never assume a replacement filter fits because the brand is the same; use the exact refrigerator model number.

4. Separate useful connected functions from novelty

For a Wi-Fi model, identify what the app does: temperature alerts, diagnostics, filter reminders, vacation settings, or remote control. Check whether core cooling and dispensing functions remain available if the app account, wireless network, or cloud service is unavailable. Avoid paying for a connected feature that no one in the household will use.

  • Spacious 4-Door Design

5. Compare energy information for the exact model

Use the current energy label and annual energy-use estimate for each model under consideration. Compare models with similar capacity and configuration; a larger refrigerator can consume more electricity even when its label is efficient for its size. Record the label’s estimated annual operating cost using your local electricity rate rather than relying on a generic brand reputation.

What the cited LG models show about feature variety

LG’s U.S. product pages illustrate why a brand-wide feature verdict is unreliable. The LRFLC2726S is listed as a 27-cubic-foot counter-depth French-door refrigerator with a built-in ice maker, smart inverter compressor, and Door Cooling+. The LFXS26596D is listed as a 26-cubic-foot Wi-Fi-enabled refrigerator with InstaView Door-in-Door, dual ice makers, and ThinQ connectivity.

Those examples establish variety within LG’s range; they do not prove that LG offers more or better features than Samsung. For a fair comparison, select a Samsung model with the same door layout, similar capacity and depth, and equivalent ice and dispenser equipment, then compare the official specification sheets line by line.

The LFXS26596D page references the LT1000P replacement water filter. Treat that as a model-specific compatibility statement: verify the exact refrigerator model before ordering any filter. Filter fit, replacement interval, and local availability can affect the long-term cost of a dispenser-equipped refrigerator.

Warranty: distinguish parts coverage from labor

Warranty language is often the deciding factor when two refrigerators have similar specifications. Read the warranty document for the exact model and purchase date, and record the duration for the complete appliance, sealed system, compressor parts, and compressor labor.

Warranty question Why it matters What to verify
Initial parts and labor This is the period when ordinary covered defects may be repaired without a service charge, subject to exclusions. Length, registration rules, proof of purchase, and whether an authorized technician must perform the repair.
Sealed-system coverage Compressors, evaporators, condensers, and related sealed components can be expensive to diagnose or replace. Which components are included and whether coverage includes labor, refrigerant, travel, and food-loss claims.
Compressor parts coverage A long parts term can sound comprehensive but may leave a substantial labor bill. Whether the stated term covers parts only or both parts and labor, and whether the term changes by model.
Promotional extensions An extra year may depend on actions and dates rather than being a permanent baseline. Purchase window, app connection, product registration, eligible models, and the complete promotional terms.

Samsung’s U.S. warranty page describes, for most refrigerators, one year of parts and labor, five years of parts and labor for the sealed system, and ten years of parts coverage plus five years of labor for the digital inverter compressor. Samsung also says terms may vary by model. The phrase “10-year compressor warranty” therefore does not mean ten years of full repair labor.

LG product pages currently advertise a promotional extra limited-warranty year on select products. The offer is conditional on factors such as purchase dates, ThinQ app connection, registration, and stated terms. It is not a universal LG baseline; check the exact product page and save the terms with your receipt.

Service: make the comparison local

The cited J.D. Power 2025 service ranking is an overall appliance-service ranking, with GE first and Samsung second. It is not refrigerator-only and does not provide an LG-versus-Samsung refrigerator service score. No available source establishes a national refrigerator-service winner between the two brands.

Before buying, call or use each manufacturer’s service locator with your complete ZIP code and model number. Ask the following questions and record the answers:

  • Is there an authorized servicer within a practical driving distance?
  • What is the earliest appointment for a non-emergency refrigerator repair?
  • Does the servicer commonly stock the model’s control boards, fans, valves, filters, and compressor-related parts?
  • Who pays diagnostic, travel, refrigerant, and labor charges after the initial warranty period?
  • Can the retailer deliver, level, connect, test, and haul away the old refrigerator?
  • What happens if the first visit does not resolve the problem?

These checks are more useful than an unsupported claim about average response time. Save the service phone number, warranty PDF, model and serial number, and purchase receipt before installation.

A practical buying decision framework

If your priority is… Give greater weight to… Be cautious about…
Fewest potential failure points Simple layout, one accessible icemaker, fewer dispensers, strong local service, and clear sealed-system labor coverage. Choosing a feature-heavy model solely because it has the newest display or app.
Maximum ice and chilled-water convenience Ice production location, bin capacity, dispenser ergonomics, filter cost, service access, and an easy-to-replace water filter. Assuming every additional icemaker has the same reliability or warranty treatment.
Counter-depth appearance Installation drawing, door and drawer clearances, and usable interior capacity. Comparing advertised cubic feet without checking projection and ventilation requirements.
Smart-home integration Specific alerts and diagnostics you will use, offline operation, app support, and privacy settings. Treating Wi-Fi connectivity as a reliability benefit.
Lowest ownership risk Exact warranty labor terms, authorized ZIP-code coverage, parts access, and retailer installation support. Relying on a brand slogan or a single satisfaction score.

Installation and first-week checks

  1. Inspect the carton and appliance for dents, broken shelves, or door misalignment before signing delivery paperwork.
  2. Confirm that the model and finish match the order and that all shelves, bins, ice trays, and manuals are present.
  3. Have the refrigerator leveled according to the installation instructions so doors seal and drawers operate correctly.
  4. Connect the water line only after checking the shutoff valve, tubing, and filter installation. Look for leaks at the connection and behind the unit.
  5. Allow the manufacturer’s stated settling time after transport before powering or loading the appliance, following the manual for the delivery position.
  6. Set temperatures using the manufacturer’s recommended starting values, then verify with an independent refrigerator thermometer rather than judging by touch.
  7. Discard the first batches of ice and flush the water system as instructed after installing a new filter or connecting a new line.
  8. Register the product, save the serial number and receipt, and enroll in any promotional warranty only after reading its conditions.
  9. Test door alarms, temperature alerts, dispenser operation, and icemaker fill while the retailer’s return or damage-report window is still open.

Common comparison mistakes and how to avoid them

  • Calling satisfaction a reliability score: Keep J.D. Power’s owner-satisfaction results separate from PP100 reliability results.
  • Creating a missing Samsung number: The 2025 reliability release summary does not list Samsung refrigerator PP100, so do not infer one from another appliance category.
  • Generalizing survey findings: Consumer Reports reports patterns by configuration. A French-door result does not automatically apply to a side-by-side or bottom-freezer model.
  • Reading a compressor-parts term as full coverage: Check whether labor, travel, refrigerant, and diagnosis are included for the entire stated period.
  • Ignoring dispenser complexity: Ice makers, water valves, tubing, filters, sensors, and door wiring can create additional service points.
  • Comparing incompatible sizes: A larger standard-depth refrigerator may have more storage but require different clearances and energy use than a smaller counter-depth unit.
  • Assuming advertised features are universal: InstaView, Door Cooling+, dual ice makers, ThinQ, and other named functions belong to particular models, not every refrigerator from a brand.
  • Choosing on national service claims: Verify authorized coverage, parts access, and appointment options for your own ZIP code.

Bottom line: choose the model you can fit, maintain, and get repaired

Samsung has the higher J.D. Power 2026 satisfaction scores in the listed French-door and side-by-side segments, but that does not establish a lower failure rate. LG has published refrigerator PP100 values in J.D. Power’s 2025 reliability release, while Samsung’s comparable values are absent from that summary. Consumer Reports identifies different configuration-specific concerns for both brands and highlights icemakers and dispensers as common problem areas.

Use those findings as screening information, then make the purchase decision at model level. Match dimensions and layout, decide how much ice and connectivity you genuinely need, read parts-and-labor warranty language, and confirm authorized service for your ZIP code. That process is more defensible than declaring either LG or Samsung the universal winner.
